Not at all a stupid question. That was one of the first things
that I checked:

The cable is sound (we've tried replacing it) and it's
an UW controller, so I don't believe it to be a cable
length problem. But I'm at my wits end to find out how to
recover the use of this last drive.

On Solaris it's the mpstat command. I've never had a reason to
look under liiHnux for it:

This is just as you say, a kernel crash. It is caused either due to an
error in the kenrnel, faulty hardware or incorrectly setup. You will have
to tell us more; like what program you use, your hardware configuration,
to full messsage.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Jesse F. Hughes)
Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2000 15:46:44 GMT
Hey ho.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software error. Last night, my
machine crashed (running 2.2.10 kernel). When I rebooted this
morning, fsck found errors on both partitions. I told fsck to fix the
errors (and thereby lost every bit of work I had done the day since the last
backup -- thankfully, the night before last).
The result of fixing the errors was that any file I had visited
yesterday (and perhaps earlier?) was removed. Also, there were other
problems that I'm still trying to sort through.
The only clue I have in the logs is the following (from syslog):
Mar 2 01:23:34 phiwumbda kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at
virtual address 00000070
Mar 2 01:23:34 phiwumbda kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 0062b000, %cr3 = 0062b000
Mar 2 01:23:34 phiwumbda kernel: *pde = 00000000
The crash occurred in the 20 minute period after 1:14 (judging from
the "MARK" entries in /var/log/messages -- but, then, if I've lost
data on my hard drive, how come that file is uncorrupted?). I'm not
sure that "clue" is much of a clue. I just noticed the same error
message in the syslog from a few days earlier, and I didn't have a
crash then.
The other notable thing is that I've thought my hard drive sounded a
bit loud lately. I'm not sure how to describe it, exactly. Just a
bit percussive when it starts up.
Any ideas on how to diagnose the problem? Also, what do I do when
fsck asks if I want to fix a problem? I answered "yes" and lost
buttloads of data. Is that the best I can hope for?
Please email a courtesy copy of any replies. I'd like to figure these
things out as soon as possible. Also, please direct me to an
appropriate group if this question doesn't seem to belong here (say,
if you don't think this is a hardware problem).

Ultra-Wide or Ultra2-Wide?
There's a _BIG_ difference here. Ultra-Wide has a 1.5m length limit.
Ultra2-Wide has a 12m limit.
Still, I wouldn't expect that to be the problem if the other drives are
working OK. Bad cabling or termination should cause all the drives on
the bus to fail, not just one.

Hello.
I'm having a Winfast 3D S900, which is based on the intel i740 chipset, I'm
using the X-server XFC_i740 without problems.
But I want 3dfx to work.
In my /proc/pci it says
Bus 0, device 16, function 0:
Multimedia video controller: 3Dfx Voodoo2 (rev 2).
Fast devsel. Fast back-to-back capable.
Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe7000000 [0xe7000008].
and about the 2d part of the Card
Bus 1, device 0, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Unknown device (rev 33).
Vendor id=8086. Device id=7800.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 11. Master Capable.
No bursts.
Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe6000000 [0xe6000008].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe5000000 [0xe5000000].
I'm using kernel 2.2.5-15
Would it be posible to get working 3dfx with this card.
Once I followed som instructions
and got a module, that could be loaded with insmod 3dfx, but the tests
(testGlide2x etc.) failed.
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone had experience installing RedHat Linux onto a drive connected
to a controller that is not listed in the controller options during the
install. Is there any way to provide alternative drivers at install.
My install fails because RedHat can not access the drives without the
proper controller.
I did find the proper driver but the instructions seem to assume that
you already have Linux up and running and that you are just adding
additional storage.

SUBJECT: ETHERNET connection on Docking station.
I have a question about my ethnet card setup. I get
it running but it is kind of flakey. And I am not
sure where it figures out what module to load for my
ethernet card.
I am running a Dell Latitude CPi 366XT with & without
a docking station. I am running RedHat 6.1 but have
upgraded to kernel 2.2.14 and PCMCIA 3.1.10. (PPP didn't
want to work in 2.2.12-20 that was shipped with RH6.1.
Also running BIOS rev A05
When I am docked the lsmod looks the same as when
I am not docked. In both cases it is running
3c589_cs. But I thought I told it to run 3c59x.
I am sure some of this is wrong... here are my
settings:
/etc/conf.modules:
alias char-major-14 nm256
post-install nm256 /usr/bin/aumix -v 100,100
options eth0 xcvr=1 io=0x2f8 irq=5
alias eth0 3c59x
The 0x2f8 from Win98 "System Information"
Here is what it says for my setup reletive to
the 3COM stuff (when docked)_:
x0120-x012f 3Com Megahertz LAN +56K Modem PC Card (B)
x0120-x012f 3Com Megahertz LAN +56K Modem PC Card (B)(Ethernet Interface)

In conf.modules I have set 3c59x above to 3c509 with the
same options, and it worked (sometimes)

eth0 stuff I set up manually
eth1 stuff was configured by Kudzu at boot up while

In both cases (both docked and undocked) lsmod
shows:

Also, it seems to take a while for the thing to
be able to find any other computers on the net.
(I suspect it is because I have something set
wrong and it figures that out.)
See anything I should be doing differently? I was expecting
lsmod to show 3c59x while as was dock and that way I could
use to know I was docked (and then setup my external monitor).
Thanks for any input I only 1/2 understand any of this so any
comments are welcome.
Thanks much,
