Hello,

My question is very simple, but I haven't been able to find an answer.
I've been searching for a book that delves into the theory of how
software controls the hardware (basically a hardware/software interface)
- literally, how software (machine code) causes bits to flip or motors
to actuate. I've seen only a few books on this topic, but they didn't
answer my questions. I guess this question deals with control theory,
systems, computer science, and everything inbetween. I've also been
searching for information on theory of object code and how program
loaders work. Anything you can suggest? I'm not looking for an
architecture reference - I've read all CPU and hardware manuals I could
find on a number of computer architectures.

Thanks very much.

I've got a strange, but similar problem - when I move a very large file
onto my UDMA drive (from another drive on my system) the machine locks
up. I turned DMA transfers off for that drive and things seem to work.

USB modems.

I don't think many people would agree with you. ECC memory is a little slower
and usually a lot more expensive. I've never had a single problem with non-ECC
memory in a variety of systems, including dual P-IIIs with 512 MB RAM.

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or victory/horror
stories to share about seting up video4linux cards. I am planning on
using a Captivator PCI card and I want to be able to view camcorder
recordings through it. I don't want to waste the money and time if it's
not gonna get a decent frame rate though. In Windows it is supposed to
get 30 fps, but can Linux do it?

Thanks a ton,

What I did is make or download a pair of rescue bootdisk and rootdisk, then
boot up and mount a floppy minux filesystem. Then I mount both harddisk into
say /mnt1 and /mnt2. So I can use "cp -via /mnt1/* /mnt2" to clone a disk.
Of course the disk cloned may not be bootable the first time, you have to
boot it from floppy and do the lilo stuff again.

on the other hand, a pci (or other) device which could itself do ppp
would be a cool thing. once you write a frame, the modem wouldn't
wait and time-out looking for more data. you could move the packets
back and forth using dma. uarts with their constant flood of nickel
and dime interrupts make a lousy interface. make an modem with
ethernet card interface!

unfortunately, modem vendors are avoiding a smart card and building
idiot cards with as little as possible on them. oh well.

I set up my ppp stuff under RH5.2, everything seems fine at first.
Everything is ok, like ping, telnet, netscape,..., but after a while I found
something really unusual that the net speed is extremely slower than
that under windows system. I can hardly surf the net by using netscape
under RH, and when I download something from the net, the speed
is extremely slower than under windows.
I'm wondering if I did something wrong with the configuration or
something not configured well with the modem, I've got a u.s. robotics
external modem 56k, but the speed looks like only 56 :(
People told me that it's the modem IRQ problem, I'm wondering how
to check the modem IRQ and how to set it? I have an U.S. Robotics
external 56K modem. I did no confiugration except plugging it on.

Thanks a lot,

This card can be used using the generic PCI NE2000 driver.
Compile the NE2000 driver into your kernel or alternatively, run
the NE2000 kernel module (I think it is called ne2k-pci.o). What
distro are you using?

Subject: Booting from a LS-120
Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 09:57:27 +0200

Hi,

I reacently replaced my old 1.44M floppy with a LS-120 (SuperDisk). I
managed to
get Windows 98 boot from it, but Linux will not boot from a SuperDisk.
If I use put
a 1.44M floppy in the LS-120 drive I can boot Linux from that disk.

I have tried two methods to get Linux to boot from a 120M floppy

1. copy the kernel directly to the LS-120 device (/dev/hdc) and puting
an ext2 image
after the kernel. When I boot using this setup the kernel loads and
then I get an
error message: "invalid compressed format" and "System halted"

2. made an ext2 fs on /dev/hdc and set up LILO. I get the lilo message
on the screen
and can select from the boot menu, but when I have made the
selection, it just
    prints 0x01 and halts

By the way, the LS-120 is an ATAPI drive connected as master to the
second
IDE controller (/dev/hdc). I am running Linux kernel 2.2.9 (slackware
3.6)

Does anyone have any clue on how to get this working?

Thanks in advance

Well, you dream when you sleep at night.

You _can_ squeeze in Linux, but it will be slow (you don't say how
much RAM the machine has, that will make a big difference). Forget
about X on this machine.

If you want a Unix-like system on this kind of machine, I would
suggest you look at Minix.

Hmm, I've been playing with normal IDE disks mounted in some of those
elcheapo drawers that can cut off power to the drive. Then on some of
the IDE chips (including the Promise) one can tristate the IDE channels,
so it can be made almost safe to pull the disks on an active system.
It works, but it demands that the driver is modified a bit to support
it..
