Subject: PS/2 Mouse not working. HELP
Date: 12 Feb 1999 06:05:52 GMT

I am running slackware 3.6 on a Laptop computer. When I was using the
old 2.0.35 kernel my mouse worked perfectly with the psaux module. I
recently upgraded the the 2.2.1 kernel and now my mouse does not work.
The new kernel uses built in ps/2 support. I have checked to make sure
that it is enabled. I have compiled the kernel and installed it. All
of the other features, ie. cdrom, networking, modem, sound all work
perfectly. I just can not run X (because of no mouse) and I can not use
the mouse in the shell. Whenever GPM is run I get the mesg that the
device /dev/mouse is not found. or I try the /dev/psaux and still get
that it is not found. I do not know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I am all set to build a linux box from scratch with a asus at

hardware in.

I know that I can buy a $25.00 special from one of the local computer
stores but I want a GOOD case so i can use soft boot options on the
motherboard.

Any stores online or otherwise?

any info is appreciated.

Well, I finally figured out the problem. All I had to do was turn OFF
plug and play compatibility though the computer's BIOS, and everything
was good from therein.

I am having the same problem... here are the details:

Origional Setup (eide)
2 hard drives, (master and slave on chain 1)
1 cdrw (master chain 2)

I decided to setup Linux on the slave drive but I wanted to keep a bit
of a win partition, so: (using linux fdisk)

hda1 (bootable win98)
hdb1 (fat data partition)
hdb4 (linux swap)
hdb5 (linux root)

presumably hdc is the cdrw (I haven't checked).
Installing Linux went smoothly (RedHat 5.2), I haven't tried buring
anything under Linux yet but the CD mounts easily enough for reading.
(IE: Linux is working just fine).

BUT, if I boot to win98 (lilo installed @ masterboot hda) it now gives
me a IDE controller error and does not see the cdrw drive. It also
tossed both hard drives into compatability mode. I figured what the
hey, and added the dos cdrom device driver and mscdex calls to the
bootup. Win98 now displays the cdrw and seems to occasionally get the
volumn label but won't read cd contents. I haven't tried an audio CD
yet.

I had a similar setup with Win95 and Slackware 3.5 a few months ago
and it worked smoothly.
=============================
My guesses are:
  a) Win98 is confused by Lilo?
  b) Gremlins?
  c) Buggy EIDE controller? (built-in IDE on M-Tech Mustang 524)
  d) The one armed man?
  e) PNP issue? (Hi-Val 24r/2w cdrw)
  f) Spanish Inquisition?

Hi

I am using the sound processor fon the montherboard. I have not
checked what it is visually yet, but the Win install disk that came
with my machine says it is a YAMAHA YMF715E-S.

I am using OSS 3.7 and have tried the generic WSS, generic MAD16 and
sb 16 drivers. The sb16 and WSS drivers almost worked, except the =

sound output was very patchy, like it was being interupted every half
second or so. I guess this means the drivers aren=B4t working?

Any ideas on a suitable driver? I=B4m fairly much a newbie at Linux,
so be gentle. I using the SuSe 6.0 release with kernel 2.0.36.

If your windows is win95 then you could read them see the following
freshmeat entry ( http://www.freshmeat.net )

FSDEXT2
   Sean P. Kane - October 14th 1998, 12:16 EST

FSDEXT2 is project to port of the second extended file system (ext2fs)
to Windows 95, albeit a read-only version. Using FSDEXT2 you can
transparently mount your Linux ext2fs partitions on Windows 95.

If you compiled 2.2 with the Plug & Pray option, and previously your printer
was known as "lp1" or "lp2", it now will be known as "lp0". Either reconfigure
your printer via linuxconf, or edit /etc/printcap and change lp1 to lp0.

By the way, this is documented in the Documentation/Changes file:

Parallel Ports
==============

As of 2.1.33, parallel port support can now by handled by the parport
driver. Be aware that with Plug-and-Play support turned on, your
parallel port may no longer be where you expect it; for example, LPT1
(under DOS) was sometimes /dev/lp1 in Linux, but will probably be
/dev/lp0 with the new Plug-and-Play driver. If printing breaks with
the new driver, try checking your lpd configuration. A good source of
more information is the Documentation/parport.txt file included with
the kernel.

Subject: weird hard drive problems
Date: 12 Feb 1999 04:11:11 GMT

Hi,

I am running Slackware 3.6 with a hand compiled kernel and I'm running
into the following problem:

Sometimes when I try to access data on /dev/hda5, I get a bunch of
very weird errors. They look like this:

>-------SNIP-------<
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=2776834, sector=1901826
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05, sector 1901826
>-------SNIP-------<

This particular error occurred when I tried to compile a file that was
located on /dev/hdb5. I first saw it during the installation of
Slackware and thought I had bypassed it by formatting the partition
by hand. Well, obviously, I was wrong.

/dev/hda5 resides on an old 1.5GB Maxtor IDE drive. /dev/hda1 is 300MB in
size and contains the root directory. /dev/hda2 is 128MB and contains the
swap partition. /dev/hda5 takes the rest of the room (about 1.1GB).
That's all of the information I can think of at the moment.
Does anyone have any idea what went wrong?

TIA,
Juergen

I have been seriously considering buying a laptop and installing Linux,
and have an opportunity to purchase a 486/33-based "AST PowerExec" with
8 megabytes of RAM and a 510 megabyte hard disk drive. This machine has
pair of type-II PCMCIA slots (with an "Intel" chipset) and a

I have tried both. Kernel 2.2.1 is, IMHO, a better option than alsa.
Make sure to check, in menuconfig/xconfig, "show experimental options",
or you cannot select "es1371" in the sound section.

Subject: RH 5.1 and UDMA problem
Date: 10 Feb 1999 21:19:13 GMT

Recently I've been upgrading a couple of my Linux mchines to Red Hat 5.1.
The elderly 486DX100 with a pair of 2 Gb SCSI drives goes like a rocket -
quite fast enough for database development.

The other, a Cyrix 166 MMX with an 18 month old motherboard *was* OK until
I put in a 5 Gb UDMA disc as part of the upgrade. Now it runs like a dog.
For example, a shell script which produces an HTML report on the machine
status (RPMs present etc) takes 2 minutes on the 486 and 23 on the 166 !

I understand that UDMA isn't completely supported in the 5.1 kernel, but
since the motherboard is way too old for the interface, I can't see that's
where the problem is. The BIOS is happy with the drive configuration,
although it only lets you configure the primary channel (which is where the
new disc lives). But the machine is still agonisingly slow.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience that may help ?

TIA.

I use Suse linux 6.0 with kernel 2.0.36. Linux was installed on an existing

I get the following message in chat from the ISP when logging in (from =

/var/log/messages) :

chat:[8260]: 9600/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS^M

As I have a 56K modem (v.90 TI) I was hoping for something more than
9600!!
Is this a problem within my modem? Or is this just a =B4gotcha=B4 =

message?

Any help appreciated.

Tony
