Realizing that this post was a follow-up to a lighthearted
post, I still would like to take this opportunity to point
out probably the biggest benefit of using an external modem
over an internal modem. In the event that an internal modem
has to be reset, you need to toggle the power on the system;
an external modem has its own power switch that can be flipped
without affecting the rest of the system.

This is important, especially for mission-critical servers.
For the rest of us, powering off a system plays havok with our
system's uptime. ;-)

Squeeze noise?? Do you mean the dialing and the connection noise?
There is a command for you modem which will tell it to be quiet. Look in
your modem manual ATM0 is one pretty common command.

I have the card and it works just fine in XFree86 3.3.3...I had to tweak a
little bit in 3.3.2 with the config file, but with 3.3.3, I'm getting
RGB weight of 888, whereas I had 555 before.

Many companies don't consider a single dead pixel a defect, they require
some minimum, say 5, before they consider a screen defective.

It isn't the 486 architecture that does not support large hard drives, it's
the BIOS. Many late-model 486's BIOS's can handle the large drives.

I know there was some software for dos/windows (OnTrack, I think) as for
Linux-type software available, I'm afraid I just don't know.

Subject: Compaq Deskpro 6000 and PCI BIOS
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 20:59:16 GMT

Hello all, OK, I think I've read all the readme's and Howto's before
coming here so I am desperate for any help. I need to get my onboard
NetFlex-3 PCI Ethernet card working in Linux. Everything else works great
with this RedHat 5.2 installation. I have a Compaq DeskPro 6000 with a
Pentium Pro 200, Adaptec 2940U PCI SCSI Host adapter with a 2 2GB seagate
hard drives, an IDE CD-ROM, 96MB RAM and a RedHat 5.2 Install CD. Currently I
have my 1st HD setup with 2 Partitions, NTFS for the c: drive and FAT for the
d: drive, both approximately 1GB each. On the second drive, I have a 24MB DOS
partition, a 47MB Swap partition (sdb2) and a 1947MB Linux root partition
(sdb1). Neither Linux, nor the Redhat Installer will recognize the
onboard PCI ethernet card. It is a NetFlex-3 PCI card. From what I've read,
this is because the PCI bios on this model is stored in Hi-MEM and is
inaccessible by Linux. Fair enough, I can find the Compaq movepci.exe file,
load it on a DOS bootable floppy and go. Problem is, hoe to get Linux
to boot from here so that I can take advantage of this change? Using
loadlin, I have gotten the error "Idle task could not sleep" which seems to
have a resolution and is posted all over the web in German. All I THINK I
need to do now is boot into Linux from this point and do an insmod and
ifconfig to get the card going. Is there an easier way to do all this? Am I
on the right track? Th kernel I'm using is copied right off the Linux root
partition and boots the machine fine from the NT boot.ini file. Any help
anyone could give me would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance. --Dave

I had two Matrox Millenium cards, two monitors and Metro-X.

I could run X on both monitors, but it worked like 2 desktops of
a "pager" like KDE or FVWM or Window Maker have.

I could not run 2 seperate X sessions! I couldn't run a console on one
and X on the other! I wanted to be able to run X -query to another
machine on one monitor and X locally on the other... Couldn't do it.
I even called Metro-X and they said it could be done but that they
didn't
have any plans to do it.

As far as I know X11R6 has no restrictions on the number of X Displays
you can have on one box (i.e. 10.10.10.10:0 10.10.10.10:1
10.10.10.10:n....)
But XFree86 has no provisions for handling this.

I didn't do the upgrade (hadn't even heard about it 'til now),
but sndconfig auto-detected my Ensoniq (1370) with no problems.
It played the sample fine too... it's just that the drivers with
RH 5.2 suck... :(

? there are specific drivers for the 1370 and 1371 chipsets...
as I said, though... they aren't so good.

Creative Labs upgrade on the card (from Ensoniq's

I would have to say, don't go for the cheaper WangDat 3800 DAT tape drive. I
got one, and its somewhat finicky. I had to send the first back becuase a tape
got jammed in it. The second unit will hang when trying to read DDS-2 tapes
with hardware compression and block sizes > 8192 (it can write the tapes fine).
I also seem to have DDS-2 tapes go bad more frequently after a few uses than my
old Archive DDS-1 drive (dunno whether it is the WangDAT or DDS-2 tapes in
general). HP and Sony are the two big names in DAT tapes (and of course are
more expensive than WangDat and Seagate).

If you rerun Xconfigurator, it should set up the links, otherwise make sure
that /usr/X11/bin/X is a symlink to Xwrapper and /etc/X11/X is a symlink to
your new X server.

I have the same chip (Sierra Screamin 3D) and I still haven't been able to find

at 16. I was just curious.

If I find something in my continued search, I'll email you.

Don't know about the others but Slackware comes with several boot images that
can be used to make a set of boot & root disks. The boot images are on the CD
in bootdsks.144 and can be installed on a dos formated floppy using rawrite.exe
(don't just copy the file onto the floppy). 'rawrite' will also make a root
floppy. The best root floppy image is usually color.gz in the rootdsks
directory.
For the boot disk select one that supports scsi and in your case probably
aha2x4x.s would be best.
This will let you boot and find your scsi drive. The Slackware setup program
will let you tell it the target installation partition.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Q] Color printing under linux
Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 06:38:58 +0900

Hi everybody,
I would like to ask how to print out color pictures.
I have Canon BJ-240 which could print color image under
Windows but I can't get it to do so under linux.
I am using aps-filter version 4.91 and it made my
printcap as follow:
ascii|lp1|bj200-a4-ascii-mono|bj200 ascii mono:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-ascii-mono:\
        :lf=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-ascii-mono/log:\
        :af=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-ascii-mono/acct:\

:if=/usr/lib/aps-4.91/filter/aps-bj200-a4-ascii-mono:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:
#
lp|lp2|bj200-a4-auto-mono|bj200 auto mono:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-auto-mono:\
        :lf=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-auto-mono/log:\
        :af=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-auto-mono/acct:\

:if=/usr/lib/aps-4.91/filter/aps-bj200-a4-auto-mono:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:
#
lp3|bj200-a4-ascii-color|bj200 ascii color:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-ascii-color:\
        :lf=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-ascii-color/log:\
        :af=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-ascii-color/acct:\

:if=/usr/lib/aps-4.91/filter/aps-bj200-a4-ascii-color:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:
#
lp4|bj200-a4-auto-color|bj200 auto color:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-auto-color:\
        :lf=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-auto-color/log:\
        :af=/usr/spool/bj200-a4-auto-color/acct:\
:if=/usr/lib/aps-4.91/filter/aps-bj200-a4-auto-color:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:
#
raw|lp5|bj200-a4-raw|bj200 auto raw:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/bj200-raw:\
        :lf=/usr/spool/bj200-raw/log:\
        :af=/usr/spool/bj200-raw/acct:\
        :if=/usr/lib/aps-4.91/filter/aps-bj200-a4-raw:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:

I thought that by using lp4, it should be able to
print color image, but still it becomes bw color. Did
I misunderstand anything? I tried printing some PS doc
that contained color pic and web pages. The result is
always the same no matter I specify printer or not.

I will appreciate any advice. It is a pain to go back
to windows everytime to print something color :-(

Personally I wouldn't put another external modem into any single user
system. Just complicates everything when it comes time to debug. Things
such as loose cables or flakey power supplies. The bigger problem is
finding internal hardware that still allows manual configuration. You have
to wonder about a manufacture that can't afford $1 to install jumper
headers.

I feel your pain. This must be the primary reason that the economy is so
bad in Japan, evrything priced to high vs the rest of the world. I
consider MY $20 month ISP fee combined with a $16 a month phone bill to
much.

Just installed RedHat5.2, but it doesn't recognize my SMC Elite16 NIC.
Does
anyone out there know of a driver for this or some way to get RH to
detect it?
