Hello,

Just got my 6th linux machine running. My first dedicated workstation. The
rest have been servers.

Anyway, I need a input filter for an HP 4MV. Any suggestions where to look?
What to do?

The printer is connected via network.

Thanks in advance,

The windows networking side is doing host name resolution and this needs
to be setup on linux (eg- DNS). Something needs to supply the IP
address of godzilla.acpub.duke.edu:

[21:53] asus:~ > ping godzilla.acpub.duke.edu
PING godzilla.acpub.duke.edu (152.3.233.44): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 152.3.233.44: icmp_seq=0 ttl=246 time=204.3 ms
64 bytes from 152.3.233.44: icmp_seq=1 ttl=246 time=190.0 ms
64 bytes from 152.3.233.44: icmp_seq=2 ttl=246 time=180.2 ms

--- godzilla.acpub.duke.edu ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 180.2/191.5/204.3 ms

Netscape on linux, just like windows, needs to know where your mail
server is and what protocol it speaks.

> my linux experiences are driving me crazy, if somebody can please help me

linux doesn't make people crazy. People make people crazy. For
example, the opening scene in Blade Runner where Mr. Holden is asking
Leon to tell him about his mother.

Want to know the strangest thing?
I had some wierd error, and being a newbie i somehow managed to totally screw
up my system,
i lost almost everything i had, and decided it was a better idea (timewise)
to just reinstall. I installed everything fresh and started over with the
latest 2.3.5 kernel. I NOW HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS WITH MY SOUND
CARD!!!!!
i did not use anything different about the installation, i used the old
.config but it now works perfectly.
i am at a loss for explanation, and not suggesting this be repeated, but i
maybe there is something different about the 2.3.5 kernel? Also i am still
gettin the same problem with my kernel, is there somehting that i am
forgetting to do? How do i update the Sytem.map?

Find and download XFree86-Setup, XFree86, Xconfigurator, XFree86-SVGA (svga if
that is what your video card uses other wise get the appropriate one and make
sure you get the newest version). Then upgrade them. I use RPMs so rpm -U
filename.rpm works for me. XFree86 itself must be installed after the other
files. Don't bother with renaming. The system will know what version you have
and what you want to install.

Tim, first of all thanks for help, but I don't understand what you said.
All right, I admit I don't know much about linux or networking for t
hat matter, could you please be more detailed I guess?

1) so i should let my email program (kdemail) know about
mail-db.acpub.duke.edu host? but all this info is there - it was working
for past 7 months, so i don't understand what i can change there.

2) you say,>Something needs to supply the IP
            >address of godzilla.acpub.duke.edu:
so what is it? Like I said I never changed anything (it just stopped
working for no apparent reason to me) and I don't
really understand waht IS involved.

3) is not it that the server i connect to is supposed to find
godzilla.acpub in case of telnet or mail-db.acpub.duke.edu in case of
retrieving emails? and this server is at school, not here on my computer?

thansk - I'm totally lost here.

Interesting...

I suspect two things, that the name windows uses for the mail host at duke
is different from the one you are using on Linux, and that the configuration
of the duke mail server has been changed so that it no longer responds to
mail-db.acpub.duke.edu. Check which mail server windows uses and also
contact the duke network people and ask them what is the name of the mail
server should be.

therefore, I suggest you run the following command.

Dave...
Let's look at this...
You're upset that the module isn't loaded during the kernal
initialization, yet you've figured out how to get it loaded
(using the utility of the rc{N}.d directories, to get it loaded
IMMEDIATELY after the kernal is loaded.

I find this to be aking to worrying about whether you are sitting
in the 7th row or the 10th row of the airplane...you leave the
airport at the same time, you get the same in-flight beverages,
and you land at your destination at the same time.

Unless I'm missing something, the system is basically the
same by the time the "login:" prompt appeats on the screen.
Or in other words, this is much ado about nothing.

During install of Redhat you have to give manually the options for
that card ( i have the same one). Select aha152x and type the next
line:

aha152x=0x340,9

"0x340" is the adress and "9" is the interupt.
