John,
Is your mouse on COM1 by any chance?
By default, COM1 and COM3 share an IRQ line, that means that
only one port (either COM1 or 3) can have the CPU's attention at any
one time... I'd suggest turning off COM2 and setting the modem up
there...

You need to tell LILO to logically swap the two drives for you when
booting Windoze. See http://www.wwnet.com/~stevelin/booting.html for
the details. (Version 21 fixes the bugs covered on the page.)

I have the same problem with red hat and and a Compaq 5220 with the
supplemental disk. Also, if you have the same video card as my compaq,
the ATI Rage Pro LT, you may not get X windows to run. I just get a
blank screen. They say that the latest release, version 3.3.3.1-1, can
handle the card but I'm about ready to give up.

Is this possible? I own the SupraSonic II, the dual analog modem from

You can find some help on this at
http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/filesystems.html#corruption
If you've got serious problems that are not easily fixed and you
deside it's worth the (great) effort to try, then the easiest way
to get started is to install another Linux on another disk or
partition. You can get it into 100 MB or less, depending on the
distribution.
Then you can comfortably work on your fixes with a full set of
tools.

Is anyone using the Linksys EatherFast 10/100 PCI LAN card?
http://www.linksys.com/products/fast/lne100tx.htm
I'm looking for a low cost 10/100 NIC for a soon to be Linux Box. My
plan is to get a cable modem hook up to it ans use it as a server
(internet gatway) to connect an addition Win 9x box and 2 Mac's.
What do you think of this card (setup, compatibility)? Is this a decent
choice or should I look at something else (I've seen a Netgear FA310TX
cheap at a local store also) ?
BTW, what I mean by cheap is under $30 USD.

I have a bootable LS-120 drive which can't boot a kernel image on a
regular 1.2 Mb floppy.
My LS-120 is set up as /dev/hdd, my root partition is /dev/hda5 and I am
using kernel 2.2.1.
I created the image using 'cp /vmlinuz /dev/hdd
rdev /dev/hdd /dev/hda5'
When I rebooted, I got 'loading..............' and then the machine
reset.
I dug my old floppy drive out of storage and the boot disk worked
fine on it.
I tried rewriting the image using the floppy drive; same result.
I tried using 'dd if=/vmlinuz of=/dev/device bs=512' where device
was /fd0 or /hdd as appropriate; same result.
I tried all of the above using 2.0.35 instead of 2.2.1; same result.
I have a Lilo bootdisk that works fine.
It appears that the LS-120 is treating the floppy differently than a
floppy drive would. The kernel treats the LS-120 correctly as a block
device for purposes of reading and writing, since the image boots
properly in a regular floppy drive.
I would greatly appreciate some insight here,

Don't know about the Promise Fas Trak stuff, but I am using Netgear
FA310TX cards in my linux boxes.
You will need to copy the tulip.c file from the disk that comes with
the netgear card into /usr/src/linux/drivers/net and rebuild your
kernel. When you "make config" (after copying the file), make sure
you select the tulip driver. Good instructions are on the floppy disk
in the doc/linux directory. Good luck.

Another option that would solve all your modem problems would be to make
the modem the first device in the phone line then have all the other phones
in the house downstream from the modem.
If the modem has two phone jacks plug the phone line into the line jack and
connect all the phones to the second (phone) jack. That way when the
modem is off hook all the downstream phones will be disconnected by the
modem's internal relay and no matter what your family will never be able to
interrupt your online sessions.

I *once* did the same thing. On my multi-boot system (with 3,
count 'em, three versions of Linux), I was planning to run e2defrag
on my primary root partition, the one with /etc and all the important
stuff. Out of habit, I typed mke2fs /dev/hda5. For a split second,
I wondered why I didn't see the expected curses screen clear. Well,
there were curses to be had (but not from Mr. Dickey) when I realized
what I had done.

....however, because of an ``rm -rf / rite of passage'' incident back
in the ``early days'', a relatively fresh backup saved my bacon. The
awesome power of Unix and the complete trust that it places in the
user is a *good* thing. Sure, there will be the inevitable mistakes
