Thanks again. I think it's clear now but just a final query. Here is the
result of hdparm -i
[root@scholes2 /root]# hdparm -i /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Model=Maxtor 91296D6, FwRev=GAS54112, SerialNo=A603BLWC
Config={ Fixed }
RawCHS=25113/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=29
BuffType=3(DualPortCache), BuffSize=512kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=off
DblWordIO=no, maxPIO=2(fast), DMA=yes, maxDMA=2(fast)
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=25313904
tDMA={min:120,rec:120}, DMA modes: mword0 mword1 mword2
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4
Now, the number of heads is 16 and LBAsects seems to be the right number
(assuming 512 byte sectors) so according to the theory everything should be
happy? However it isn't, as the fdisk output earlier shows an 8gB drive full
to capacity. In order to get the drive to work to full capacity I have to run
fdisk with the number of cylinders being 25313904/(255*63) rounded down =
1575. I just thought that fdisk could make this calculation for me :) saying
as the conditions are fixed. Does the head > 16 problem for fdisk refer to the
real number of heads or the funny number you get from hdparm -g? Does fdisk
2.9i work and do this all correctly for 2.0.3x?

Hi!
Ok, I have a Creative Sound Blaster 16 PNP. On Windows98, it uses,
IRQ 5, DMA 1, 5, and I/O 220.
To install my sound card, i used the "sndconfig" command. ( I have

Then it says a PNP card was found and later, it says "a sound sample
will now be played...", but it failed.
I get "The following error occured running isapnp program....LD
setting veriry failed"
"Error occurred executing request 'LD4' on or around line 382.."
What should I do? I know my sound card works on win98.
Please, I need some help.
Thanks.

It's been about 4 years since I ported an ImageAccel to X. As I recall it
was tough cause we had to use port I/O exclusively to get data to/from the
card. Anyway, I would start by trying the standard SVGA lib (hopefully they
have an decent VGA core). Other than that, some good supported cards can be
had for < $30.00US (Trident 9750 based cards come to mind). I would also
check to see if someone, maybe the folks at S.u.S.E., have ported that card.
Good luck!

Caleb:
If you are trying to play the mp3 files with x11amp, you can't until x11amp
gets fixed -- kernel 2.2.1 exposes a flaw and breaks it. If you run x11amp
from the bash prompt, you'll see that you get a socket error.
If you're not using x11amp... well... I dunno! Once I found my x11amp was
broken, I tried kjukebox (I use KDE 1.1) and it plays the mp3's fine... though
the list creator still suffers from a really annoying floating point
exception...
Hope this helps.

Subject: Can't mount vfat (FAT32) partition under 2.2.1
Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 10:13:19 -0600
Hey all...
I've run into a problem getting my fat32 partition to mount recently,
and was told you might be able to steer me in the right direction. I'll
make this as brief/to the point as possible.
Background:
* Was using Linux kernel 2.0.36 with modular vfat support (RedHat 5.2
distribution).
* Compiled 2.2.1 kernel source with gcc 2.8.1 and glibc, no problems.
* Compiled vfat support into the kernel (not as a module).
* /dev/hda1 is a large (6GB) FAT32 partition.
* Linux and all ext2 fs partitions are on /dev/hdb
* Using mount version 2.9i
* linear addressing specified in lilo.conf
* Reconfigured LILO and everything seems to be working fine, EXCEPT...
Problem:
* Whenever I try to mount /dev/hda1 (e.g. mount -t vfat /dev/hda1
/win98), my session becomes unusable. By that I mean that it "hangs" --
it accepts input from the keyboard and echoes it to
the screen, but I never get a shell prompt back.
Supplemental Info:
* Logging in to a second virtual console and doing '# ps' shows me the
mount process, but attempts to kill it fail silently.
* /proc/filesystems lists vfat as installed.
* uname -a reports the correct kernel version and build time.
* fdisk reports the correct info for /dev/hda
(e.g. Device Boot Start End Blocks Id
System
/dev/hda1 * 1 784 6297448+ c Win95
FAT32 (LBA)
)
* examination of /var/log/ reveals the following, much of which I don't
understand:
...kernel: [MS-DOS FS Rel. 12, FAT 203,
check=n,conv=b,uid=0,gid=0,umask=002,bmap]
...kernel:
[me=0x5e,cs=0,#f=13,fs=0,fl=0,ds=0,de=43596,data=0,se=63542,ts=16842945,ls=0,rc=0,fc=4294967295]
...kernel: Transaction block size = 512
...VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 03:00.
However, the MSDOS filesystem is intact. I can still boot Win98 (but
why? hehe) with no problems from the C: (/dev/hda) drive.
Whew. Well, I missed the mark on keeping it brief, but I think I
managed to include most things that might help you point me in the right
direction on this.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

I was just reading
http://www.rpi.edu/~veliaa/linux-dvd/
and thinking about the encrypted DVD support. A
couple of us have pledged $1100 for DVD support
http://visar.csustan.edu/bazaar/bazaar_list.html#kernel
but I'm wondering if more would make a difference.
Is the problem with DVD support simply a matter
of resources? If we threw a few thousand dollars
at it, would it get solved? Could an Internet-
wide (distributed) crack of the encryption be
performed?
What would it take? Someone give me a realistic
number. Is there a small (cooperative) hardware
manufacturer that would be interested in this?
I'd be interested in paying for an intern to work
on Linux support for a DVD drive if the results
would be open.
It frustrates me that hardware manufacturers have
been so uncooperative with potential customers.

Due to a change in hardware, my Linux HD has changed from hdb to hdc,
and now Linux (SuSE 5.3) will no longer boot. I have changed the fstab
and lilo.conf to reflect the new location, but since I can't get it to
start, I haven't been able to run /sbin/lilo even with the -C option.
The boot sequence gets about halfway through, then starts freaking out
with messages about bread and going past the end of the device. It ends
with a kernel panic.
How can I recover without doing a complete re-install?

Subject: Adaptec 1542B help required...
Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 16:22:44 +0000
Can someone give me a little assistance with a small problemette?
I'm just cobbling together a backup server out of spare parts
(not always a good idea I know...)
The problem is this;
I'm using an AHA-1542B with a 500MB Conner CP30540, a 1GB Quantum
(TM type) Fireball and a Panasonic CR504B CD-ROM.
When I try to load ASPI4DOS.SYS I get 'Installation Failed' everytime.
Everything is stock (on the card) - so IRQ 11, DMA 5, 330 I/O port
address and DC00 base address.
The only thing I've done is to disable the floppy.
The devices are configured thus;
Device 0 - Conner
1 - Quantum
2 - CD-ROM
7 - 1542B
with the terminators on the 1542 and the CDROM (end of cable).
As I can't load ASPI4DOS I therefore can't load the CD driver
(I've tried using ASPICD and one from Panasonics' Web site but to no
avail (in fact I've tried quite a few - just to see - nothing)),
If I go into debug and startup the diagnostics s/w (DC00:0009) it card
passes all the tests performed.
I know all the bits work as I've tried a 2940 out of the main server.
So the problem must be with the card somewhere...
Possibly.
The only cards in the machine are the 1542 and a PCI S3 (Cirrus) VGA
card.
Oh, and another thing I can't do is CTRL A on bootup, yet the BIOS is
not disabled.
Anything you think I might have overlooked or not thought of would
be of great help.

I've owned three TFTs, and this is the first I've seen with no dead pixels.
It's very nice, but we can't insist on it. One reason these screens cost
"only" $2g is the dead-pixel allowance ... we'd pay a helluva lot more for
our machines if none were allowed.
Question for the gurus: is it not true that dead pixels in TFTs tend to
happen during the manufacturing process, and that it's very unusual for them
to die during its lifetime?
Finally, depending on the store's return policy, you may not NEED a reason
to exchange it, if it really bothers you. But the odds are not great that
you'd get one with none, or even fewer, dead pixels. You stand a much
better chance of getting a machine with some other mechanical problem.
Really, just ignore it. ("There are children starving all over the world,
and we're griping about one dead pixel on a $3000 computer!")

Hello!
I'm new at Linux.
I'm trying to put have SuSE 6.0 running, but i am not able to put my
modem to work. I wonder if you can help me with this. I'd appreciate.
I have a SupraExpress 56i SP (intl). It's an internal modem, ISA, PnP.
And i also have a genius Netmouse. I have no other PnP card or "strange"
hardware.
In windows, i use to have mouse on com2 and modem on com3. They both
worked perfectly. Currently i only have Linux in my HD.
In my BIOS setup i used before to have the following information:
COM1 : 3f8
COM2 : 2f8
Now, with Linux i can only install my modem (with pnpdump and isapnp) if
i set COM1 disabled in BIOS. Otherwise i get an error while running
isapnp.
So, in the end, i still get mouse on com2 and modem on com3, just like
on windows.
Next step, if i open kppp in kde and test the modem, i get the message
"can't open modem".
If i then set link /dev/modem to com3, i will instead have the message
"modem busy" on kppp.
I've searched several docs, ngs and books and i didn't manage to solve
the problem.
will someone help me, please? I'd really like to become a Linux user,
but i also want to put this thing to work.
Thanks in advance.

All you need is some way to boot your system from disks and re-run lilo.
If you don't have an emergency root/boot disk set, I would recommend
"tomsrtbt" which can be found at www.toms.net. It is a disk image which
fits on a 3.5 floppy formatted to 1.722 meg, and it can be written to
disk from either a win or a linux system. Once you have booted linux from
the disk, you just need to mount your root file system and run lilo (probably
with some option that specifies the root directory as the mount point of the
root filesystem).

fdisk v2.8 doesn't use the LBA geometry when doing a verify, so
reports overlapping cylinders when cyl >1024. (All partitions above
that look like they start and end on cyl 1023.) fdisk 2.9i does use
the LBA geometry for verify but gets that info from the kernel,
so you've got to get both the newer kernel and newer fdisk for the
various complaints to go away.
If you have a newer kernel and the latest fdisk and print the partition
table from the expert menu, it still shows the cylinders maxing out at
1024. I asked the author about that; his answer was that this listing
is (by design) what fdisk actually reads from the partition table on the
drive. The correct LBA cylinders are shown in the printout from the
fdisk main menu.

Assuming you use lilo and your PC100 memory is in slots 0 & 1, when the LILO
prompt comes up type 'linux mem=63M'. It might boot. Either get rid of the
PC66 memory or keep your memory bus below 100MHz. Bad policy even if Wxx gets
away with it.

I have just decided to upgrade to a Gigabyte dual cpu, dual SCSI UW2
mother board but it looks like the Adaptec 7896 chipset is not supported
in the 2.2.1 kernel. Does anyone know if it will work, or if anyone is
going to do a driver??

Can anyone help me with the answer to my problem (or where I can find the
answer ??). I am trying to run xwindows but whatever graphicscard I choose
it only results in a screen resolution of 320X200.
I am quite new to Linux...but I am enjoying it....
I use a Diamond Viper 550 Riva TNT
Thanks,
Ed.
