Hi there,
I have this modem too and it works great either in jumperd or PnP mode.
I already e-mailed diamond asking for the source code for the drivers.
This is not a Winmodem, it connects to the ISA slot and the best mode
for it I believe is in jumpered mode. What diamond does is emulate an
ISDN terminal adapter by using software. During the setup of a DUN
connection you have to use the shotgun adapter to use the dual modem.
Multilink is okay but heavily flawed. Let's flood diamond with requests
for either a driver from them or the source code so we can build our own!

there is no such thing as a windows printer. there are only printers
whose manufacturers refuse to honestly document their products.
(this is illegal in the auto business, for instance, and reportedly
illegal in Europe.) there is no downside to documenting what your
products do, since the support cost is trivial (just put the docs
on a web site, and they certainly already have docs.)
for instance, epson printers have a primitive, low-level protocol.
but epson documents it, therefore Linux can print to epson printers.
most hp's have documented protocols, and some others have been
reverse-engineered in spite of hp's anal-retentiveness. IBM (lexmark)
is by far the worst - they refuse to even acknowlege that their
printers could, in principle, be used on anything other than windows.
Linux can do it. some vendors are asses.
but specifically, the vendors wouldn't create a new device, or anything
nearly that hard. support for the printer would be merely another
backend to ghostscript, which lpr filters requests through. the device
is just a mundane parallel port, so would need no change.

Has anybody any recommendations for a reasonably
cheap and good UPS that works well with Linux,
i.e. unattended shutdown, voltage correction and
command to shut down the UPS once the machine halted?
Also, what is the Linux software to control these UPS's?
I was looking at APC Back-UPS Pro 650 for example....
Any suggestions are appreciated

Technically, should't the same be true for winmodems then too? If the
manufacturers made the specs avaliable, would it be possible to write a
driver for a winmodem??

this is the message that fdisk return after a mouving ext2 partition (n.4)
and resizing extended DOS partition (n.2).
I have tree primary partitions and I wanted to inrease the tird one
(Win95). So I reduced the extended DOS partition (2), wich contains a
logical DOS partition and the Linux swap partition. I also created a new
logic partition for DOS in n.2.
I used PRESIZER and FIPS.
I had to reformat partitions 1 (DOS boot) and 3 reinstall DOS and Win9
and rerun LILO. But now I receive the message 'can't read hda' if I start
fdisk under linux Debian. Same result if I try to reinstall linux with
boot/root disk.

Works just fine.
(Note that there are *two* drivers - one for before & one for after

If you don't know which you've got, use the tool lspci with the -n

I noticed your discussion of Dell XPS PIIs and Linux and hope you can answer my

Linux and Win98. I have tried looking thru the hardware compatibility list on

Greetings All:
I have a new K6-2 motherboard with the SiS6326 AGP Graphics with 8MB of
video RAM. Some have said that AGP support is growing. Does it exist in
the latest
version of RH Linux? I have downloaded the latest XFree86 from RH and
will find out tonight
if it does. Anybody else out there solved this problem? Any work arounds
to getting an SVGA
screen. The only X screen I can get is a 320x200 screen which is almost
useless (with no Virtual
screen capability!) When I come out of X the feedback from the X server
indicates that it
was an unrecognized SiS chipset.
Current RH distribution is 5.2, not sure what version of XFree86 is
installed.
Thanks!

i was having problems with my fujitsu 640se drive (m2513el).
untarring large files or just trying to get toc files from archives
would inevitably fail. running fsck on mo discs would lock up the
machine. it seems the problem was in the kernel patch i was using. i
had patched my 2.0.36 kernel sources with the 2048dif-2.0.36 patch
that i retrieved from a japanese site. ftp.liniere.u-tokyo.ac.jp or
something like that. after comparing the contents of the
fujitsu2513a-2.0.36.diff, i -R'd the first patch and applied the
german one.
it worked.

Subject: printing with 2.2.1 kernel
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 20:58:57 -0500
I have RH5.2 running on a Gateway G266M, with what I assume is a pretty
standard parallel port. Printing to a local Epson Color Stylus 800 used
to work under the 2.0.36 kernel, but doesn't work on the 2.2.1 kernel I
recently compiled and installed.
(I did change the device to lp0 from lp1)
When the new kernel boots, I see a message that the parport is being
initialized with 0x378 (which is correct); I never see a message that
/dev/lp0 is being established.
I tried adding
append "parport=0x378,7 lp=parport0" to the lilo.conf (and rerunning
lilo); this didn't help (though it did use the irq, so the kernel saw
the argument)
Any one have any suggestions? I do admit to being a relative newbie. I
think I turned on all the appropriate kernel options when I did make
menuconfig, but maybe there's one I forgot?
Thanks!

It is just a warning, and is documented in the PCMCIA-HOWTO. It means
that your /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file is left over from an older
version of the PCMCIA package and doesn't have a line like:
include memory 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff
to define a high memory window, mostly useful for mapping CardBus

But what is eating my memory?
And why does xosview tell me, that 80% is in use, but most of it (about 55%
total go to Buffers and Cache).
I am only using KDE and am using 2 Filemanager windows, 2 xterms, netscape (up
to a maximum of 10 windows), xosview, alsomixer (and from time to time kedit),
and kisdnload
And this does not happen during work, it happens after killing the xserver
(strg alt bacspace) and then typing reboot or shutdown.
And than I get this message.
Norbert
P.S.: The most anoying about this problem is the fact, that the next Linux boot
takes 5 minutes because of the filesystem checks.

I've alway wondered about the auto business. Why is it that the average
Joe can't hook up his laptop to the computer in his car and do a little
diagnostic work. Seems like if the auto industry is supose to document
thier products, we would be able to do this. As it is finding a free or
lowcost application, for any OS, to run on your laptop is damn near
impossible. Personally I'd vote with my wallet if any Auto manufacture
would open up the diagnostic channel to the cars controllers. Controllers
is plural on purpose, some cars even have fairly advanced networks in them.
Just venting Guys.

Hi
You need to change the dirctory to /usr. Change to X11* dirctory. Then change
the dirctory to bin. Execute the Xconfigurator at the prompt. Select the
General VGA Compatible option during Adaptor selection . Take Custom for
Selection of Monitor. Then Select the Vertical Sync range as 40-150 (fourth
option). Then select 1024x768 SVGA interlaced option. Try executing startx at
the prompt.
Now your resolution will be increased.
