Newer kernels (the later 2.1's, 2.2.x, and 2.3.x) support advanced power
management, which will allow the kernel to powerdown the computer when
you shut it down. Your motherboard might not be using standard power
management hardware, which unfortunately may be supported by Windows in
your case but not linux. Try compiling and installing a new kernel (be
sure to compile in the power management :-) or upgrade to redhat 6.0. I
know it supports powerdown on shutdown by default.

There are two approaches:
1. If you can avoid modifying the kernel itself, pretty much everyone agrees
that you can make proprietary applications and modules for Linux.
2. Use FreeBSD, NetBSD or OpenBSD.

Subject: Question installing SCSI drivers for initio
Date: Tue, 08 Jun 1999 11:05:14 -0400
Hi,
I am rather new to linux (about a month now). I have 5.2 up and
running (sidenote: linux rocks!)
I want to get access to some of the devices on my SCSI card
(scanner, CD-R). I have an initio -I/O Highway INI-9100A SCSI card.
The driver for this card is not included in the standard install, hoever
initio provides drivers for linux.
First question. Has anyone used these drivers? If so which
version they have two or three.
Second question. I already have SCSI support in the kernel.
Can I just compile the drivers and load them as a module? or do I need
to actually rebuild the kernel. (I haven't rebuilt a kernel yet so I'm
kinda leary). I may not have the full scope of how the SCSI drivers
work.
Any help on these two questions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

RedHat 5.2
Is it possible to use the tv-tuner or the video in/out of the card (for
a camera or to send image on TV)?
3. My SoundBlaster AWE64 does not function (problem when trying to open the
port) in RedHat 5.2 but
work perfect in Win 98 (sorry, but I still use it for some personal
applications)
The motherboard is an ASUS P2B with the bios version 1008 from

Subject: Linux not booting on PPro
Date: Tue, 08 Jun 1999 15:35:22 GMT
I have an Intel PR440FX motherboard, with one PPro 200MHz CPU and one 32MB
DIMM. Untill just recently linux ran fine, but when I booted it up today, it
just hang when it was supposed to boot the kernel. Further investegation
shows that when I boot from a boot-floppy, it displys "Now booting the
kernel" and then dies. The NT kernel does not boot either (hangs after
printing "Microsoft Windows NT..." on the blue screen). I can, however, run
dos programs just fine, HIMEM and EMM loads with no problems, even the ELKS
(Embedded Linux Kernel Subset) kernel boots fine. I have tried tweaking all
bios options to no avail.
Does anybody know what it wrong? It would appear that the computer hangs
when entering protected mode?

I have an internal PCI modem. Windows and all the docs I have says me that
this modem uses the COM 2 port and the irq 10 (I have configured linux for
this settings with the setserial utility), and that it is compatible with
the standard AT commands.
But I can't get it work : when I try to call my internet provider, I get in
my system log a message like this : pppd :I/O error (using the /dev/cua1
device correctly configured).
My modem is a MDP 3858V-E from Rockwell. Can someone tell me if my modem is
definitely incompatible with linux or what to do to get it work ?

Nope no support for the Trio3D chipset under Xfree86 yet, except for
running the SVGA server. The next release is said to support this
chipset. version 3.4 I think. Check out www.xfree86.org for information
on the new release coming soon.
I got around this problem for now by running the SciTech Display Doctor
Xserver which handles the card properly.

The saga continues with this scanner.
I have the SCSI card recognized and a UMAX 1200s scanner that shows up
under ./proc/scsi/scsi
my /etc/sane.d/umax.conf file looks like this:
scsi UMAX "Astra 1200S" Scanner scsi0 00 05 00
# scsi Vendor Model Type Bus Channel IL LUN
# scsi UMAX * Scanner * * * * *
/dev/scanner
/dev/sge
the sane-scsi man page says to refer to the scanner by the following
name:
scsi UMAX "Astra 1200S" Scanner scsi0 00 05 00
I can't seem to get the thing to recognize
[dan]$ scanimage --device scsi UMAX "Astra 1200S" Scanner scsi0 00 05
00
scanimage: open of device scsi failed: Invalid argument
If anyone has gotten SANE to work, if you could help me with the command
to point to the scanner, I'd appreciate it. I'll post any success I
have for those who are interested.
Thanks

Compile the kernel with support for sound as a module.
Unpack the sblive driver package.
Rename the driver module, which is closer to your kernel version to sblive.o
Copy the sblive.o to /lib/modules/your.kernel.version/misc. For example I have
/lib/modules/2.2.9/misc and there are sblive.o and soundcore.o.
Then you type "insmod soundcore" and "insmod -f sblive >/dev/null"
If you wish this to be automatic, put the 2 statements above to some file,
which is executed
during bootup, in my case, SuSE 6.0, I put them to /etc/rc.d/boot.local.

I've got two banks of memory, so I tried running that test on each
bank separately.
On the 32 MB bank, I got a fair number of errors right off the bat.
On the 64 MB bank, I can run that script without any problems at all.
I did 75 full kernel builds without any errors.
Then I fired up X-windows and started an mp3-player (amp) and got a bunch
of sig 11s being sent to the kernel builds.
Then I went into the BIOS and disabled the level 2 cache (running dual
P5-MMX 166 CPUs) and restarted the torture test. It isn't crashing,
but I'm not there to beat on it with X and amp. And it is running
MUCH slower.
This is very frustrating. I don't know if it's a heat problem, or the
fact that my CPUs aren't EXACTLY the same (one's a Intel-attached fan,
one's a fanless CPU that I put a peltier on)
I'm running kernel version 2.0.34, on a Tyan Tomcat IIID.

I am running Caldera OpenLinux Lite 1.1 and cannot get my Modem Blaster
v.90 (DI5660) to function in Linux, even after using isapnp to configure
it. It works flawlessly in Windows 98 (using COM4, IRQ3). I tried
using the same settings in Linux and it refuses to read or write to the
port.
I have already looked up the appropriate FAQs, newbie info files, etc.,
and NONE of them are working.
Has anyone set up this modem in Linux successfully? I know this is not
a Winmodem.
I also cannot get my sound card (Sound Blaster 32 PnP) to function,
although it functions fine in Win98.

the answer is none. afaik there are *no* pci modems which work with

Hi, Why would you want a modem on a PCI bus? It is not going to be
faster at all..
There is _one_ PCI modem which was reported to work with Linux,
and two more which will probably work when they become available.
Look up http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/PCImodems.html
The price for those PCI modems is around $100, vs. $40 for ISA modems
with the same speed.
Best,
a.

I use a vivitrion 1776 (the numbers should be right below the vivitrion
label). If you aren't using redhat set the monitor to non interlaced
svga 1024x768 resolution. You might want to try something like high
frequency svga if the refresh rate is too low for your tastes. With
redhat, the monitor is in the list of monitors in X setup. Use
Xconfigurator to set it up.

My Yamaha 4416S works just fine with the above controller. Everything
worked out-of-the-box.
Make sure that you have the /dev/sr? devices on your system, as the
preferred mounting point will most likely be sr0.
The only other advice/forwarning that I might be able to offer is
this: I had wanted to upgrade the firmware from "f" to "g", but the
flash-update utilities provided from Yamaha only work with Windows. I
had one heck of a time getting this drive to work under Windows --
whenever the CD-RW was attached to the chain, the controller failed to
be recognized (hence all devices attached to the chain). There were no
scsi id conflicts nor termination problems to troubleshoot. The fix
was to move the PCI cards all around in the box, and it finally
recognized the controller and devices.

I'm sure I don't have the space requirements for the machine, but it does
sound interesting, I'm sure others think so too, do you have a place to post
the pictures so we can all get a look at it.

Don't post binaries.
They are TOTALLY useless, pointless piles of fetid dingos kydneys, and every
sane person loaths them.
