Of course YES. Winmodems only implement certain functions that a re part of
the modem hardware into software; they use the main processor's resources.
One could, for instance, use a Linux box's processing power, given that you
get the WinModem specs.

I hope we'll be able to have LinModems soon :)

Date: Tue, 16 Feb 99 20:14:12 PST

I have X working on my Fire GL 1000 Pro with no problems. Since I have it
connected to a fixed frequency monitor that does not sync down to VGA text mode

frequencies, I'd like to use the fb based console during the boot sequence.
However, no matter what I try, I can't enter *any* VESA graphics modes when I
set "vga=ask" in my /etc/lilo.conf. The card is correctly recognized as "VESA
VGA" by the boot loader, but it doesn't list any modes other than text modes.

This is with a RedHat 2.2.1 kernel compiled with the "VGA text console",
"Support for frame buffer devices" and "VESA VGA graphics console" enabled.

Is there something I'm missing? Is this not possible with the Fire GL 1000 Pro?

Thanks in advance,

Berend

As I understand it - you wont see much improvement with the newer 3d cards
(voodoo2 etc) over a voodoo1, with a P233. The newer cards need a PII300 and
over to get the most out of them. Perhaps you could try overclocking your
P233 a bit - http://www.tomshardware.com/overclock.html

Hey-
  See this page at the RedHat site follow the instructions for the
XFree86-3.3.3.1 upgrade and it would be good to upgrade Xconfigurator as
well.

  I'm using the Viper 550 as well, works great.

I'm thinking of getting one of those adapters that lets you use a
K6-2/266 with a socket 5 motherboard (PL-ProMMX from Powerleap).

Has anyone heard of any issues with Linux and one of these adapters? My
guess would be it is transparent to the operating system. Linux might
even let the CPU run cooler than Windows?

These certainly will qualify as "any thoughts":
1. By chance did you update the BIOS and not load "setup defaults"?
        CPU speed ID is a BIOS function....
2. Power supply.
        So many problems are solved here it is no longer funny...
3. Something in the PCI bus gone crazy.

Good news! I got a response from Donald Becker, here's what he wrote:

> I compiled them into the kernel, so that counts as built-in, right?

Yup.

> However, they do show up in kerneld.

Hmmm, what do you mean by that?

Anyway, you should put the following line in /etc/lilo.conf:
   append = "ether=0,0,eth1  ether=0,0,eth2  ether=0,0,eth3"

Note: some old versions of LILO were picky about spaces, so put in two (as
above).

Alternately, you can use the 3c509 driver as a module.

---> So thanks a million, Donald!

Ahh I know this problem well. The Promise card is a good card, but
getting it to work with Linux is hell in a handbasket.

The first thing you need to get is the lilo-promise.patch file. If you
can't find this file, email me and I'll send it to you. Then get the
lilo source code, apply the patch and compile. Run lilo and make sure
that the new one is happy with your system.

One thing about having a Promise in your system is that the first
drive on it is /dev/hde NOT /dev/hda. If I understand correctly
there's been some enhancements to the kernel so you can swap the
Promise's ports with the built-in ones found in most motherboards. I
personally don't use this since the differing naming scheme doesn't
bother my setup.

With that in mind here is my lilo.conf:

boot = /dev/hde
compact
delay = 100
root = current
image = /vmlinuz.main
   label = linux
image = /vmlinuz.backup
   label = linuxbackup

Good luck! You'll need it. :-)

I am looking into getting a kanji keyboard such as the ones offered at:

http://fingertipsoft.com/kbd/nmb.html

and I have a few questions about how they are used in linux.

First of all, are they supported in Linux? In other words do I have to
compile the kernel a certain way, or just set the keyboard setting
differently?

I am just learning japanese, so I wouldn't be using the keyboard in Kanji
mode all of the time, would it be simple to switch modes from a standard
QWERTY style to a Kanji mode (using some sort of key combonation or shell
command)?

I have looked many places on the net and have only found the above link as an
available place to purchase a kanji keyboard, Is there a better place to buy
one? or a better brand to buy, I have a 5-pin AT style 'Windows' keyboard
currently.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The jumpers that it has are:

Step 1: Figure out your video chipset.
For you to do this you should contact your manufacturer, in this case
http://www.tais.com. Then search for your machine.

Here we run into some difficulty. Toshibas website claims no knowledge of
the machine you claim. They do claim knowledge of a Toshiba Satellite
4080. Is this what you meant? The website claims that it has a Trident
Microsystems Cyber 9525.

This information should help unless I guessed your model number wrong.

Assuming you're talking about for X, get XFree86 3.3.3.1 and run the
