IANAL, but...
Linus has said that he does not consider proprietary drivers supplied
as kernel modules to be in violation of the GPL, so that's what you
should do for drivers. Don't expect too much sympathy when the kernel
developers decide to change the module interface and your modules
break, however. If you have to modify the kernel code itself, you will
have to release those changes under GPL.
On the userland side, any proprietary application you write from
scratch can remain proprietary unless you decide to link in a GPL'ed
library; fortunately, most libraries are not GPL'ed. If you decide to
modify existing applications or libraries, there is a fair chance that
they will be GPL'ed or LGPL'ed and you will have to release the
modified sources.

Um, let's not do that on Usenet posts, ok? Some of us spend real money

I recently replaced my old non-MMX MB, fitted with a 6x86 P150+, with a
later MMX board with a 200 meg IDT Winchip C6, expecting a small but useful
speed increase.
The 6x86 P150+ gave me 124 Bogomips but the 200meg Winchip only gives 80 -
2/3rds the speed of the 6x86 and only about three times what my 486DX2-66
runs at!
Someone please tell me that I haven't wasted my time!

Primarily in allocating space for inode structures and spare
super-blocks. You can tune this, to give you back more space, but
you will need to rebuild the filesystem to do that.
In particular you'll need to tinker with the -i parameter to mke2fs which
controls the bytes-per-inode calculation. According to mke2fs(8) this
defaults to 4096. You might try doubling or tripling that. This will
reduce the number of files that can be created in the filesystem, but this
will likely not be an issue unless you're trying to use this filesystem
for a Usenet news spool where each article takes up one filename/inode.
You can also gain back more space by tinkering with the size used for the
-b (block size) parameter and -m (reserved-blocks-percentage) parameter.
You might try changing the allocation for -m from the default of 5% to 1%.
Before you make any changes, make note of how many inodes are
allocated to the filesystem by doing a "df -i". After you've rebuilt
the filesystem with new parameters, do both a regular df and "df -i"
to see the differences.
Be sure to read over the man page for mke2fs(8) before you do anything
though.

Subject: Epson Photo 750 printing slowly...
Date: Wed, 09 Jun 1999 06:30:12 GMT
Hi,
I bought an Epson Photo 750 six colour printer and have been trying to
get it running under Linux. Text is fine, I can 'cat file.txt >
/dev/lp1' and 'lpr file.txt' and it goes ok. With GhostScript I haven't
been so lucky. I got a beta gs driver from Egil Kvaleberg but the
printer just seems to work hard for quite a while, draws many sheets of
paper but prints nothing.
For a small test I switched to Windows, started PhotoShop (or something)
and printed a picture in a file. In a DOS box I typed 'copy pic.out
lpt1:' and the printer produced the picture in couple of minutes. Then I
started Linux and gave the command 'cat pic.out /dev/lp1'. After two
hours the printer had produced half of that small picture.
Is there some configuration to be done or do I just have to do my
printing under Windows?

Hello,
I have everything working under Linux, except for the sound card (which
is high end YAMAHA, with a lot of features). The soundcard is not listed
under RedHat 6.0 sound drivers, but I assigned the IRQ and DMA settings
from Windows98 when I ran the sound configuration program in Red Hat.
But I keep getting a
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/misc/sb.o:
init_module: Device or resource busy
sound: Device or resource busy
message. Can anybody let me know if it is possible at all for Linux to
"see" the sound card, or do I have to take it out and install a Sound
Blaster card? The Yamaha works fine with Win 98.

Happened to put a Linux hd to an other machine.
Everything I tried works ok except that cannot
compile kernel for any processor type option.Other
smaller compilations seem to work.
The system should be essentially Red Hat 4.2 as out
of package. I tried kernels 2.0.30 or 2.0.32. Only
significant difference between the machines is the
processor: Intel P100 vs. AMD K5/133. I haven't
considered upgrading anything if not really necessary.

You would have to release source to any mods you made to GPL code.
If drivers were written from scratch, you could probably release them without
source since they don't contain GPL code. I'd check with a computer law
attorney first. If you can get away with separate programs and module drivers,
you might not have to modify the OS at all. In which case you wouldn't need to
disclose any of your source code. You'd still need to make the source to
any GPL code you use available. But that doesn't mean you need to ship it
with every box you sell. Available != included. You could even charge for it.
Combining proprietary hardware with Linux isn't uncharted territory. Cobalt
sells proprietary hardware (with some proprietary software) running Linux.
I'll probably be flamed to a crisp for mentioning this in a cross-post to
comp.os.linux.advocacy, but here goes anyway. The BSD operating systems
(OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD) are under a license that doesn't require source
disclosure. If the GPL is a real problem, you might want to consider BSD
instead.

Maximum cable length is about 50 feet at 115200 baud, depending slightly
