I'm looking for schematics for 386/486. we are running linux and it is
networked. The problem is we have a severe size constraint and we must
make a smaller board. The only thing is we don't want to get into a lot
of development time trying to come up with a new computer. we just want
to rearrage an exisiting design that we know already works. It can have
isa or pci. Built-in sound/video or networking is o.k. A built-in
network card would be awsome, but not a nessecity. Thanks

OK.... I'm getting a little aggravated over this.

Printing to a HPLaserJet6MP worked fine on 2.0.35 (SuSE 5.3) to lp1.
When I switched to 2.2.1, I can no longer print. I've read through the
news list and I understand that I should configure par port, but where
is it??????? I've tried everything I know to do and consulted all the
howto's and books on linux I have, all to no avail. Some help

look at the Bay Networks "NetGear" range - good, cheap and a no-brainer
to use. suggest you also look at implementing 100Base-T from the start -
prices for hubs are so cheap now.

Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 12:46:30 GMT

Hi All:

I've installed Redhat 5.1 on my PC. I recently purchased the Lexmark 1100
Color Jetprinter. Judging from several postings in this and other newsgroups,
Lexmark does not provide drivers for Linux (Fat chance!!), and Linux (RedHat,
Debian, Suse, etc.??) does not support Lexmark printers. However, the
printer's manual does say that it is compatible with HP Deskjet 500C drivers.
This is listed in Redhat's printer compatibility list. So, I installed the HP
Deskjet 500C filter. But, I am still unable to print anything. Either a blank
page gets printed or the printer head(??) prints everything on the same spot
(leaving a big messy blot on the paper). Is there anybody out there with more
experience with this type of problem? Should I set something in the CMOS
setup (Bidirectional printing??), or maybe disable PostScript printing, or
install it as a plain, old text-only printer?

Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanx in advance,
Swaroop ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

So, is KDE an environment LIKE X Window? Or INSTEAD OF? Please pardon
extreme ignorance, but that's the shape of it.

I've heard these buzzwords, but I know until I get into actual use of
these systems, I won't be able to fully understand.

That was my hope. I had a friend on a (non-computer-related) mailing
list who mentioned that he had a web server set up using Linux and
Apache, running PERFECTLY FINE on an old 386. He remarked how robust
and *speedy* the system was, even on that box.

The 486 has served me well, and will continue in its role of a "hobby
machine" for me. I'm glad to have the new machine, with boring Win98,
in order to do some work for which I can be paid, but I'm looking MORE
forward to tinkering with Linux.

Just for the record: I'm not a computer person, save as a hobbyist. I
don't program; I'm a structural engineer by training and profession.
The only programming I've ever done is in connection with solving
engineering problems (Fortran, Pascal, PL/1, structured Basic, etc.) So
I am a good "experiment" to show that Linux can be a workstation OS for
the, well, not for the "masses", but for enlightened non-programmers who
are hobbyists. That's what I was into with OS/2, and what I intend to
do with Linux.

I appreciate the time you took to answer my plaint, and thank you for
your suggestions. I'll heed them.

BTW, just a point at this early stage: I do like what Red Hat seems to
have done with their boxed set. Even though, as a merely sporadic user
of Unix systems in the past (read USER, not implementor, not programmer,
just USER), I'm sort of intimidated by the power and arcanity of Linux
(just watching all the system messages scroll by during boot-up is kind
of awe-inspiring); I look forward to trying to "tame" it. If I, a true
novice without even rudimentary system programming skills, can cobble it
together, then probably anyone can given time and patience.

Regards.

While it is certainly true that you can write a driver for anything which is
adequately documented, at least in the case of "windows printers" this would
be a pretty major task - the point of them is that their protocol is
effectively the Windows GDI spec. This has benefits for the printer
manufacturers since it means that the device driver (at least under Windows)
is much thinner and, in principle, at least, it should result in higher
performance.

To drive such printers under Linux would require porting significant slices of
the Windows GDI on which the printer depends - a significant task even with
Microsoft's cooperation - and I would not hold your breath for that!!!

Look in the .xinit file in your home directory.
If it has something like exev fvwm, replace it with whatever other window

Also look in .xsession.

Try to get an external ADSL adapter that connects via 10mbit ethernet.
THen you will have no problems, otherwise start sifting through kernel
source docs and you get to write a driver.

My cousin has an external xDSL adapter, and he runs with it perfectly.
