Right. Depending from the version and/or compile-time options used,
"cp -a" may or may not copy the "dot-files" in the various directories.
That means, all files with a leading "." will be ignored - which
includes most of the usual start-up files that the programs read
to determine the default settings.

cpio might be the better choice.

Hi there,

I am trying to get CDRECORD to work the a Sony CRX145XBK CD-RW. The
following message is produced while doing a dummy write:

Writing time: 382.103s
Fixating...
WARNING: Some drives don't like fixation in dummy mode.
Fixating time: 0.012s
cdrecord: fifo had 3677 puts and 3677 gets.
cdrecord: fifo was 0 times empty and 3567 times full, min fill was 93%.

I am using X-CD-Roast Version 0.96x. X-CD-Roast just displays a message
saying:

"Some error occured. Please check process-output"

I have attached the process output for your perusal.

CDRECORD Version 1.9 produced the same message.

I would greately appreciate it, if you could shed some light into this
problem.

Thanks

- Shyam

I reset my BIOS to defaults to correct what I thought was a BIOS problem,
unfortunately this has created a whole new problem. My computer is hanging
right after it says Verifying DMI pool Data.... It accesses the HDD and
Floppy then just sits there. Could some one please tell me what a DMI pool
is and what I would need to change back in my BIOS so I can get back to my
original problem. Thanks for any help.

Reboot? Why? All you need to do is mount it.
(You'll have to shut down to put the drive in of course, but once it's
there, there should be no need for a reboot).

When you've done the fdisk/mke2fs, you need to decide where to mount the
partition...

For example, my second hard disk contains the /var/spool directory and is
mounted there.

Copy all the files from the old directory structure to the new partition.
Then add the new partition to /etc/fstab, remove the old directory structure
and mount the new partition on the old (now empty) directory (mount point).

No idea why a reboot is neccesary...

It doesn't need to get repeated.
You add the new partition to /etc/fstab.
You mount the new partition manually, and *ding* it's there.
All that sequence at the start does is check the current partitions in
/etc/fstab and mount them.

Eh? I don't quite know WHAT you're thinking!
The whole point of the mount command is to allow for an extendable
filesystem without the need to reboot!

I'm not sure, but I don't know if cp -a deals with sym links, so that might
be your problem...

I've seen people talk of using tar to perform a complete filesystem
transfer.

(Can't remember the exact invokation though)

PCI cards can share an interrupt line.
ISA cards cannot share an interrupt line.

A PCI card cannot share an interrupt line with an ISA card.

You do not need to enter the I/O and IRQ numbers for PCI cards.

Only ISA drivers accept the "io=" and "irq=" module options.
Passing unknown options to modules will prevent them from loading.

Eucalypt Software - Makers of Autopost & Rocketfuel --- Ripped Me Off!!!
-
All potential buyers should be warned to steer clear of this company. They have a
repeated pattern
of ripping people off and ignoring requests for support.
-
I know someone who sent in the $10 registration fee for Autopost TWICE (thinking the
first one may
have gotten lost) and in both instances, never got a registered version of the program
and all of his
emails were completely ignored.
-
I myself purchased Rocketfuel on-line and had to pull teeth to get an unlock code. The
web site was very
quick to take my money, but no registration/unlock code came for days and days. I
repeatedly emailed them,
only to receive nothing but autoresponses. After 5 days I sent them a message stating
that if I did not have
a working version of the program by the close of business that day, that I would
challenge the credit card
charge. Magically, the code arrived several hours later.
-
What kind of way to do business is that?
-
In any case, its academic... there are other products available for free that do
virtually the same thing
and I only wish that I had known about them before I wasted my time with Eucalypt
Software.

Redhat 6.2's kernel thinks the Athlon (Duron/Thunderbird) inside your PC
is a genuine Intel PIII CPU.
The standard installed redhat kernel then tries to disable the CPU ID.
The Ahtlon CPU doesn't like that, and the kernel panics.

Solution : boot the box with the Redhat 6.2 cdrom and choose rescue.
mount your root partition on hda and check inside /boot if there's
a different kernel inside /boot to boot. On my A7V redhat6.2 box
there was this kernel available after a fresh install :

vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0.14BOOT

edit /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to boot this kernel, and run /mnt/sbin/lilo -r
/mnt

This should be enough to boot normally from /dev/hda.

Next build a new kernel and module set :

cd /usr/src/linux ; make menuconfig (choose Processor type and features

and select Pentium/K6/TSC  instead of PIII/Xeon/Deschutes ) ;
next do a :

make bzImage ; make modules ; make modules_install ;
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz ; cp System.map /boot ; lilo ;
reboot
( check /etc/lilo.conf and /boot if your new kernel vmlinuz is selected)
and your Athlon (Thunderbird/Duron) box should be fine.

Actually the redhat 6.2 installation fails on Duron and Thunderbirds,
but thats something redhat has to sort out.

If you mean that since it's a USR, it's not a winmodem, you might want to
check again. I bought a USR 3CP5610 under the same idea a while back... at
around $120. I figured that a Winmodem couldn't possibly go for more than
$75 so I was pretty safe, and it turned out I purchased one of USR's 56K
more expensive winmodems :/

scsi : 1 host.
  Vendor: HP Model: CD-Writer+ 8100 Rev: 1.0g
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Which is also consistent.

cdrecord -scanbus gives me:

scsibus0:
        0,0,0 0) 'HP ' 'CD-Writer+ 8100 ' '1.0g' Removable CD-ROM

I've tried mostly all the suggestions given: using dd, dd bs=2k, readcd, and
every one detects bad sectors at the end. Readcd even tries to correct them
(with little success I suppose). I've read both from /dev/hdd and from
/dev/sr0 (with ide-scsi loaded) with no difference.

This morning I copied a couple of CDs and they turned out fine, even though
I got error messages on every one, so I guess what Dances with Crows
mentioned about there being unreadable sectors at the end of CDs would be
the most likely explanation for my problem. But what puzzles me is why the
drive would attempt to read these sectors, which are past the data limit of
the disk and shouldn't be read.

I also had problems with RedHat 6.2 installation hanging on me, but this was
after the packages were installed. The machine started reading the drive at
fixed intervals (say 3 or 5 seconds) over and over and over again, until I
reluctantly pressed reset half an hour later.

The workaround I used was simply to install in text mode. Worked perfectly.

Seems RH6.2 installation has a few interesting bugs...

Subject: IOMEGA ppa troubles...

Hello,
I am trying to install Debian 2.2 on a computer with an Iomega
        parallel port drive.

        I am desperate.

While installing scsi modules, this is what I get if I try to
        install the apriopriate driver:

/lib/modules/2.2.17/scsi/ppa.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.2.17/scsi/ppa.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17/scsi/ppa.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.17/scsi/ppa.o: insmod ppa failed

        What should I do next?

        Best regards,
        j.
