I use the Fireport 40; works great.

I've got one of these tiny (and I mean tiny!!) 1.2GB parallel port
connected Pereos Tape drives. As a piece of technology they are quite
impressive, even tho' the're a few years old now (the tape _drive_ is
only slightly bigger than a DAT tape).

At the moment I use it for backups and file transfers thru '95 - to
backup linux stuff, I copy the files to a '95 accessable partition.

I would really like to be able to use this natively under Linux. I'm
currently on 2.0.36. Anyone got any info or ideas on getting this
working ??

There is work underway to implement this idea into Linux ext2, mainly to
speed up NFS writing without having to revert to expensive NVRAM based
solutions that are not available on standard PC hardware. The NFS spec requires
that the data write is only acked when the data has hit permanent storage.
With the logging scheme it would just be writen to a separate log disk, acked
and then synced to the regular file system in the background. Hopefully
this will improve Linux's currently not-so-great performance as a NFS server
a lot.

I have about 50 monitors right now for immediate sale. Note that
word: immediate. =) It translates to: I need space, and I need it
fast. These are at my home. Just imagine that... 50 monitors. And
yes... I am seeking therapy for it.

They are various incarnates of the VR-series. They fall into the
following model-lines(although I will forget some):

                        VRC-19
                        VRT-19
                        VRM-17
                        VR-262
                        VR-260
                        VR-299
                        VR-319
                        VR-290
                        VR-320

All of the VR-xxx series have cables. Do remember that the VRx-xx
series have Sony Triniton tubes, and are quite cute. =)

Make me offers on any, or... hey... all of them.

I'm thinking in the realm of $50-100 for the monochrome VR-xxx's,
$100-150 for the color VR-xxx's, and $150-200 for the VRx-xx's. But
moving them is what is important, so I'm willing to budge a good bit.

the ALN - 101 is (besides being a piece of junk) NE2000 compatible. I can't
recall if any kernels come with NE2000 built in but it's quite easy to do
yourself.

Try /usr/sbin/fuser /dev/dsp
If any prosesses uses this device it will be printed.
I not it can be a harware problem.

Try cat /dev/sndstat

hello all :)
im having a problem with my diamond stealth 2 g460 card
this is the card with the i740 chipset -NOT THE S220-.
im pretty much a newby here, so anything will help.
i have xfree86 3.3.3 and the card is not listed :(
i called tech support at diamond, and the guy said to update to
the
latest version of xfree86 (which i did) and then just choose
"SVGA".
well, the server only comes up in mono or 16 color, and svga
doesnt work.

i read a couple other posts here with the same problem,(but with
the S220)
and i did see that card listed in the updated xfree86, but still
no i740 (boooo)

can someone possibly point me in the right direction?

thanx

Subject: ethernet problems

First of all : I am (yet) a NEWBIE with linux (as much as it concerns
troubleshooting!). So if can help and willing to answer, please be as
specific as possible in your answer.

I believe that this question will have been posted a million times !!! Linux
is not the operating system with the easiest way to make your lan work ! I
have done everything i could have imagined in order to make my lan work
(with the linux pc) but all my attempts have failed. So i ask help from you.
This email has as much info as i have imagined that would be helpful. If you
need more info in order to help or any any any idea that could lead to the
solution, please reply to me and i will provide as much info as i can & you
need.

My LAN has 4 PCs. Three with win98 (192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.4) and one with
win98 & linux redhat 5.0 (192.168.0.1). Windows Plug & play has worked fine
(it happens now and then !! hehe) and all the network cards have been
configured in the windows environment. In the win environment i can ping all
pcs and the lan is running ok. TCP-IP protocol has been setup normally.

When i boot with linux, i cant even ping the other pcs. In fact, i am not
sure whether linux detects or does not detect my network card (in the
192.168.0.1 pc). In the starting procedure (dmesg) only one message appears
(related to eth0) and this is the following:
-delaying eth0 initialisation

I have no idea what this means. I thought that this message appears because
linux failed to detect my network card, but if i "cat" the /proc/pci file i
see that linux does that.
More talking would be waste of time. Here is the info of my network card and
i have attached the configuration files that (i think) are related to the
network card and it's configuration. I dont know whether there is a conflict
(but if i boot in win98 no conflict appears) so i have also attached some
files that might help

The card is a CNet PowerNIC network interface card (NE2000 combatible) pci
and i have done anything the instructions say, in order to make linux detect
my card. But no light found in instructions........

I dont know what else could i do. All my friend of those who seemed to know
something about linux, have no idea what goes wrong (but now i am so sure
whether they are less newbies than me). Anyway, these newgroups i believe
are my last option.

Thanks to all who spent time reading all of this stuff !!

This may be obvious to some:
Can you use a USR WinModem with Linux? I've been thinking of kicking
the Microsoft habit but I don't wanna have to buy a new modem. I know
WinModems are supposed to only work in Windows (hence the name) but I
figured maybe they weren't counting on Linux when they made them. Are
there drivers for these? Please post or email any help. THanks! A.

Some very useful stuff provided by other usenet folks:

Bottom line: get a recent Ghostscript (5.50 is what I'm using) and configure
it for
uniprint. The settings below are good. Be sure to uninstall the Ghostscript

which came with your release before you install the new one. I didn't, and had
a few collisions. (Distributions always have a pretty old
Ghostscript due to the nature of the copyright.)

Good Luck,

add the following entry:

#
# Unified Printer Driver
#

StartEntry: Uniprint
  GSDriver: uniprint
  Description: {Unified Printer Driver}
  About: { \
This driver provides support for several printers.\
For full details on its use see the file devices.txt.\n\
To use this driver you must enter the name of the correct\
upp file in the "Extra GS options" box.\n\n\
E.g. to get an Epson Stylus Color 600 to print at\n\n\
               360dpi: use @stc600pl.upp\n\
               720dpi: use @stc600p.upp\n\
               1440dpi: use @stc600ih.upp\
         }
  Resolution: {360} {360} {plain paper}
  Resolution: {720} {720} {plain paper}
  Resolution: {1440} {720} {inkjet paper}
EndEntry

Then execute printtool (as root) and configure for your printer.
You need to name the printer (say epsII), select the Unified Printer
Driver, and choose the appropriate driver file to fill in the
Extra GS options box. According to the devices file that comes
with ghostscript, this might be @stc2_h.upp or @stc2s_h.upp.

Then print Postscript by doing lpr -PepsII file.ps

Here are a couple of links that should help you. I used them,
and my Epson Stylus Color 600 prints like a champ.

>From Bruce Stephens <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Get ghostscript 5.10 (the Aladdin version), and make sure
it has the upp driver. Precompiled ones ought to, but you
can compile it yourself if you want. The following command
filters PostScript to 720dpi ESC2 which you can feed directly
  to the printer:

     gs -q @stc600p.upp -dNOPAUSE -dSAFER -sOutputFile=- -

======================================================================
There is also an Epson Stylus HOWTO at:
     http://www.eunuchs.org/linux/

A great source for RPMs that already have ESC support is:
http://www.typhoon.dircon.co.uk
-or is it-
http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~typhoon

Read the README files.

This RPM includes Epson Stylus drivers up to 1440 dpi as well as
several HP drivers not found in the standard Ghostscript
distribution. Some of the HP printers these work on are the HP 500,
500C, 510, 520, 540, 550C, 560C, 670, 690, 820C, 850C, 855C, 870, 890,
1100 and 1600 as well as all PCL-3 printers tested. There are lots of
docs for these drivers and a man page for the hpdj driver.
This RPM includes all the post release patches up to and including
June 26 1998. This RPM also includes support for True Type fonts. See
the file fonts.txt for instructions.

Some of the included drivers drivers are:

vgalib : vga consoles
lvga256: vga consoles
stcolor: Epson Stylus
uniprint: Epson Stylus Color, Canon BJC 610, HP-Deskjet 550c, NEC

Run "gs -h" to see the full list of drivers. The files devs.mak,
devices.txt and use.txt hold information on the included drivers and
using the program.

======================================================================
Some great instructions for configuring your ESC come from Rod
Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED])

1) Grab the Ghostscript 5.10 RPMs from
http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~typhoon/.
   Install them.
2) Edit the /var/spool/lpd/{spoolname}/postscript.cfg file so that the
GSDEVICE line reads 'GSDEVICE=uniprint' and the EXTRA_GS_OPTIONS line
reads 'EXTRA_GS_OPTIONS="@stc600ih.upp"'. This will enable printing at

   720x1440 dpi.
3) If desired, create additional print queues with other names, and
specify different .upp files in postscript.cfg for different
resolutions. Three are supplied for the ESC 600 with Ghostscript 5.10.

4) The color curves in the .upp files for at least some Epson printers are

off. I don't recall the details, but if you're dissatisfied with the
color balance on your color printouts, try swapping the color curves in

the .upp files (these are the blocks of lines with names like
'-dupCyanTransfer=' and a bunch of numbers. I think it's cyan and
magenta that need to be swapped, but it might be yellow and one of the
others. I might also be thinking of the ESC 800's color curves, so
this may not apply to you, though of course you can still fiddle with
these curves if you don't like the color balance you get on your
   output.

It would be very nice to buy it commercially, but this is not univeristy funded
so we only have the money that our small group can get together, which is not
very much. We have unlimited resources in the EE deparment so we were just
going to take the extra time and pull this stuff together on our own. Thanks
for your help though

I have gotten the Colorado 5GB IDE unit to work with kernel
2.2.1 using tar. I've been struggling with taper but no joy
so far. But tar works fine so I feel less desparate about
not being able to use taper.
