I am running a AMD K6-3+ as my Linux workstation. I know the 3+ has the
Enhanced 3dnow! functions like the K7, so would there be a performance
benefit to compiling my kernel with K7 support?

Hello!
I've tryed to set up an masquerading firewall on my linux router.
Email, news, ftp and www work fine but software like
napster, hotline client and other file sharing programs don't work
(napster sometimes connects, but that doesn't hold very long).
I've opend many holes in my firewall.rc.config and even tryed port
forwarding.
You can find my test-firewall.rc.config under
http://der-extreme.onlinehome.de/firewall.rc.config .
Please help.
The router supports other services too:
- sendmail, fetchmail
- hylafax with second modem (the error was there before hylafax comes)
- bind8 caching only name server
- squid proxy server
Greetings, Jan

Hello,
you read the HELP in your prefered config
(menueconfig/xconfig/wathever_you_use),
when it comes to the CPU settings and decide then, which one you should
choose
for your system.
Good luck

I have a Trident 9685 video card with 4MB of RAM. I also have a
Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 87TXM monitor. When I configure X windows, Redhat
7 recognizes my video card and I am able to select my exact monitor from
the provided list. For some reason I am unable to get anything but the
lowest possible resolution. I have tried with a different monitor (NEC)
and had no problem. What could be wrong?

The problem is there is almost no support for the i810 video chipset. You
have to download the Intel driver at http://support.intel.com...

Just to let you know...
I've got an A7V and downloaded the source to 2.5.5: complied and
installed no problems. Currently using sensor_sweep_applet for Gnome.
I had problems with the RPM, so maybe getting the src may be the way to
go.

I've purchased a Linksys Router/Hub with the capacity to act as a hardware
firewall, along with necessary ethernet cards for the Windows and Linux
machine as well.
Do I need to configure the Linux and Windows machines to use DHCP? Is that
provided the Router/Hub?
Given this configuration, will it be possible to use the Linux and Windows
boxes in a normal networked configuration? i.e. share files and ftp from
Windows to Linux?
Thanks,
John

Maybe, maybe not.

Probably. Didn't it come with documentation?
My Cisco 675 DSL modem/router will act as a DHCP server if so
configured. I shut of the DHCP server in the 675 and
statically configured all my machines.

Yes, as long as you configure the router/hub correctly.

lilo USED to have a problem if the kernel itself was past c 1024, this has
now been solved and with older distros can be resolved by creating a /boot
partition of about 10 megs at the start of the drive.
I have Linux running very happily indeed on a 30 gig drive.

I have got an HPC7670A USB scanner working, and would like to share
my experience and find out if there are better ways.
My system is RH6.2, for which I first got a version 2.4 kernel (mine
is 2.4.0-0.26; there are now newer ones available). I also found it
convevient to upgrade dev to dev-3.0.6-5, which has the
/dev/usb/scanner* stuff included.
I ended up doing the following:
I edited /etc/sane.d/hp.conf to read
/dev/usb/scanner0
option connect-device
I added these lines to the end of rc.local
# for USB support
echo "Starting USB Scanner support"
/sbin/modprobe usb-uhci
mount -t usbdevfs usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb/
/sbin/modprobe scanner
The mount command wouldn't work inside /etc/fstab because the
usbdevfs only exists after the usb module is installed.
None of this is exactly what I expected after reading instructions
at various Web sites.
Some questions:
1. Should the scanner on the USB port be detected by the "new
hardware" detection mechanism? Mine didn't seem to be.
2. Can all this be done more cleanly? (No doubt.)

I would think that is not because the chip is not used right, but there
is a lot of support code that does 'things right' like pre sort things
to be drawn etc, that nvidia may not like the competition to know about.
But that is just speculation.
For a start in programming the old and slow code may be fine.

On the kernel 2.4.x (at least on my 2.4.2) you can choose AMD K7
CPU class, apart from that... dunno :)
On 2.2.x kernels, you don't have K7 in the CPU choices, I was using
PPro CPU type and it was working well too.
Hope it helps.
