Subject: SCSI CDROM Problem
Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 01:14:19 -0500
Hi,
I can't seem to get my SCSI Toshiba CDRom to work. (It's Toshiba
XM-5401TA.)
My SCSI adapter is the Adaptec 2940UW. Everything works under Windows
(i.e. hardware is OK). The two harddisks work perfectly fine under
linux.
Now I just installed the new linux system (Slackware 3.6) which tells me
that the supplied bootdisk had an adeqate kernel. However I still
could't mount my cdrom drive.
(I tried >>>mount /dev/hdc /cdrom, and mount would respond /dev/sdc is
not a valid block device). But it did recognize the drive at boot time
saying something like "SCSI CDROM sr0 .. ID:5 detected".
Since then I've rebuilt my kernel. I definitely enabled the SCSI CDROM
option. Now, it doesn't even recognize the drive at boottime.
What else can I try?
How do I know which device it has to be?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Pavel

try /dev/scd0 - it's definitely not hdc if you have a scsi cdrom

of course com2 is /dev/ttyS1 (/dev/cua1 is old). It sounds like you
have a winmodem. You'll need to buy a real modem.

No need for anyone answer this... I noticed there was a
/etc/conf.modules.bak and it contained the options I needed for my NE2000
ethernet card. I really don't know why but the RedHat sndconfig did not let
the ne options in the /etc/conf.modules file after it added the soundcard
??? Anyway I just added the options to the bottom of the /etc/conf.modules
files and now both cards work! Yea!

These monitors are 21", and quite pretty. =) Pretty... isn't that
a technical term?
They have PC(HDB-15), Mac(DB-15), and Workstation(5-BNC) inputs.
They are Multi-sync, so they'll work with just about any workstation
you slap onto them, too.
They have digital controls, as well. Another goodie.
None have any burn-in, or tube scratches.
They are located in Knoxville, TN, 37922-3449.
----
Now, as to the price. This is where they become so inexpensive.
Three of them are in perfect condition.
Three of them are in perfect condition, but are missing faceplates.
And the other two have a couple of cracks in the case surrounding
the bevel. They work fine, but just aren't perfect cosmetically.
All, however, function perfectly. They have been checked inside and
out, and run through a number of tests.
----
They will move fast, as I have already sold a large quantity of them
like this. These ones were left over from the buyers that couldn't come
through. Which, unfortunately, seems to always happen, no matter what
the deal. =)
----
The perfect, pristine models will go for $250. The models without
faceplates(to cover the digital controls) will go for $240. And the
models with case damage will go for $200.

P.S. - If I remember correctly, shipping via UPS ground runs ~$45 in the
lower 48
states.

Hi everybody,
I try to install Linux (a slackware 3.5) on a Compaq Proliant 1000. At
my work they use WindowsNT, and I hope to show us that Linux can be
better than Microsoft OS.
This Proliant 1000 has an onboard SCSI controler (not a smart card), and
the only information that I can have with Compaq Utilities is :
Onboard Compaq Fast-SCSI-2
I look on the motherboard, and I saw one chip NCR-0390784 and another
one NCR 53c710
So, I made the n_53c7xx.s boot floppy-disk, but any hard drive is found.
For information in this computer there is only EISA slots.
How can I install Linux on this computer ?
Thank's in advance.

Well I'm trying to ditch windows and am getting close! The only
major problem left is the scanner. I read the sane page, bought a
scanner that has a "stable" driver available but the card that
came with it isn't supported. I want to get a fairly good card
for possible future expansion to other scsi devices. Thinking
about an adaptec 2940? And how do I configure it? Right now I
just need it for the scanner and got lost in all the
"programming" howto's. Even a hint on where some simple
installation readme's are? Seems like there was some sort of
config program but I can't find it either. Oh and I'm using RH

The 80 way ribbons are used with the new ATA/66 interface, This
interface doubles the speed as compared with the 'old' ultra dma 33
interface.
The cable use more ribbons to increase reliability. My guess is that
every second wire in the cable is connected to ground, but you should
check the official specs on that.
Also ATA/66 introduces better cyclic redundancy checks on the data that
travel over the wire.
So in short, it should be faster and it's certainly more reliable,

Subject: io conflict with ethernet card (3com 3c509b)
Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 02:47:54 -0500
I recently installed linux on my pc and during installation I was unable
to configure my network card (3com 3c509). When I booted linux, I tried
running a few of the utilities to get the card configured. However, after
a few unsuccessful tries I went to Red Hat's HowTo's to see if I could
find the problem. I tried a few things and found out that a device was
taking up the IO port reserved for the network card. However, the HowTo
didn't explain how to resolve this problem. Now I'm trying to figure out
how to configure the "conflicting" device (busmouse) to use another io
port and to set up the network card to use its proper io ports. I can do
the second part, but I haven't figured out how to get the mouse on another
port. I know about mouseconfig, but I'm not sure about the side effects
of reconfiguring devices. If anyone has any advice or suggestions I would
appreciate them.

Subject: USR Modem magically disappears from system
Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 13:18:31 GMT
A little background. I have been using Linux for about two years now.
Until recently I had been using Slackware but switched over to Redhat
5.2. The hardware setup is the same.
I use the mgetty+sendfax package (mgetty-sendfax-1.1.14-5) with three
different modems COM 2, 3, 4
The modem I am having trouble with is on COM 4 and it is used for
outside dial up access and fax transmissions. Ever since I switched to
Redhat, my system has been loosing access to this modem.
If I use minicom to access the modem (after loss) the only thing it
does is echo characters. The modem will not respond to any commands.
When I loose access to the modem, the /proc/interrupts file no longer
shows the interrupt the modem is set to, and the only way I know to
make it work again is rebooting the system.
The problem seems to happen randomly and only seems to happen after
someone hangs up from dial up access. Sometimes works for days
sometimes for only hours.
I don't have a printer configured so I don't think it is an interrupt
conflict.
As I am at a loss as to what and where this problem comes from, does
anybody know how to fix this?
short of switching back to Slackware.
Thanks,
Dan

I usually use something like
nenscript -2Gr foo
nenscript is a version of the enscript utility. This prints 2 pages a
printed page in landscape mode with a "gaudy" border with header info and
page number. nenscript -G would do just the header.
There are also utilities like a2ps which will do fancy formatting and
headers.

Hi!
I'm using a Matrox G200 AGP card within an ASUS P2B motherboard
together with the current xsvga server from xfree-3.3.3.
My problem is that sometimes the monitor becomes dark for some
seconds. I believe that all screensavers are disabled (somewhere
within the BIOS, within X, within KDE). This happens really irregular
(i.e. sometimes it happens after 10min, sometimes it never happens for
some days). Of course the screen darkens while I'm happily typing or
clicking. Maybe I should mention that I'm using xfree-3.3.2 from
Suse-Linux-5.3, I only switched the version of the xsvga server to get
G200 support.
Does anybody have any ideas about that?

This doesn't have anything to do with Linux. You'll need to find out the
specific model and manufacturer of that card of yours, then ask them
for help. If there's an FCC number, you should be able to find out
who produced that specific card, but simply telling us "it does have 10
jumpers" won't get you anywhere.
