I've managed to install linux(hooray) except that the X
window won't run(boo). I have a nvidia riva TNT2 M64 4xAGP
graphics card and a Dell ultrascan p991. I can't find out
what chipset my graphics card has, does anyone know. Also
what server it runs on...there's something about a server
right? The horizontal sync for my monitor is something else
I can't find. Can anyone give me any hints on configuring
redhat 6.0 to my monitor and graphics card or is it simply
immpossible to do?
Should I try another linux program?

The reason it says your partition is too big it because disk
druid dosen't know any better that your going to use a
floppy to boot.
If you use fdisk it will work perfectly fine. THats what I
did. My linux program starts on the 2201 cylinder, and I can
easily boot it from a floppy. Just use fdisk.

RedHat 6.0 shipped with Xfree86 3.3.3.1, which doesn't support the TNT2.
Support for the TNT2 was added in Xfree86 3.3.4 and pretty much
perfected for 2D in 3.3.5 (shipped with RH 6.1, SuSE 6.2, Mandrake 6.5,
and many other distros.) If you wish to get things working, you can

Boot into your BIOS setup, and _disable_ the "Enable memory hole at
15-16M" option.
Save the new config and reboot.
All will be well after that.

0MB just means that the drive doesn't tell the driver how much cache it

This looks rather normal to me. The error message from cdrecord just
indicates that some drives may have troubles with fixating in dummy
mode. I guess the error message from X-CDroast arises from this warning,
and could be ignored. This is however only an educated guess, I have not
checked the docs or the source or anything like that.

My sugestion is that you try to write a cd for real, and see if it
works. After all, a CD-R disc today isn't much more than a dollar...
:-) If it works OK, you can safely ignore the error message.

Hello,
I want to connect my digital camcorder to my linux box. The camcorder
supports DV1394 interface (next generation of USB, as I understand,
400Mbit/sec). Does anyone know if this is part of latest kernel or
perhaps there is a standalone driver?
Also, since we are on the DV subject, I am also looking for
video-editing software for Linux.

Thanks,

1394 & USB are not related.

The in-development 2.4 has some 1394 support. I don't know how good it
is although I do know it doesn't contain SBP2 support. The code can be
compiled as modules and can be downloaded from
http://linux1394.sourceforge.net/

The Bt848 chip can capture from a number of different ports and a
typical TV/Capture card connects one of those ports to the TV
tuner and brings another port out the back as the composite
input.

As far as the kernel is concerned, one Bt848 capture card is a
single video device and will therefore use only one of the
/dev/video files rather than one file per port. Which port gets
captured is a parameter that gets set by the application that
is going to the capture, just like brightness levels etc.

In the version of realproducer I have (unfortunately not on the PC
I'm writing from) the option as to which port (TV or Composite) to
capture appears in one of the dialog boxes somewhere so try
checking out all the menus and config options within realproducer.

Yes, my zip is on the
IDE bus. I agree with you that it is likely that the kernel is
unloading the
module because I am not using it. when I run lsmod it says autoclean
next to
the ide-scsi module which furthres my suspicions. However I was under
the
impression that the kernel would also autoload the module once i needed
it
again. Does anyone know?

Also it is not possible for me to write a astartup script as you
suggested, since my machine is setup as a RDIST server and is a template
for all the other computers at my facility. Is it possible to write a
startup script for one user, ie in my home directory?
