Just do : make bzImage
.and don' t worry about the size...
You don't need to cut the size of your kernel or use too many modules..
You don't loose in quality using bzImage.

Subject: linux memory size problems
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 22:20:03 GMT
Greetings:
I am having some very strange problems which seem to be related to
memory, at least they are affected by what I do with memory.
First my hardware / software configuration:
P90, 2GB IDE hard disk, Linux 6.0, nothing fancy...
My motherboard has 4 memory slots. (2 banks of 2 slots) When I installed
my machine I started out with 2 8M sticks in bank 0. Every thing worked
fine installing and linux runs great. I noticed, though, that While Bios
reports the correct ammount of memory, linux only sees 13520 (K?).
So I went about trying to get it to recognize my memory by putting
"linux mem=16M" at the linux boot prompt. But whenever I do this the
boot process croaks with a general protection fault at the point where
the system starts to do a Partition check on hda. I've tried various
configurations of memory (2 8M sticks, 4 4M sticks, 2 8M sticks and 2 4M
sticks). In each case bios reports the correct amount of memory while
linux sticks to its 13520 number. And when I pass the amount of memory
as at the boot prompt I get the general protection fault described
above. (BTW all memory simms are matched, i.e. same type)
What gives!?
Thanks,
Andy

By default, 5% of the filesystem is reserved for superuser (i.e root).
This is to prevent a user from bringing a machine to its knees by using up
all the disk space on / and leaving the system unable to do important
things like write logs and create temp files.
You can change the amount of reserved space with the tune2fs program. But
beware that ext2fs reportedly has trouble with its anti-fragmentation
algrorithms if the filesystem gets too full. You should only reduce the
reserved space, certainly not remove it!
hope this helps,
bye

Ok, that might go too far, but I can't see how a UNIX cluster od SMP
machine can beat a DSP farm where each node costs about 30$ and has a
computing power, well look at TI's or Motorola's website to check the
latest record, say 200 MOPS?

According to : http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/techspecs/support.cgi/cpd200es,
your monitor will support 1280X1024 at a maximum refresh rate of 60 MHz
At : http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/faq/vga2rgb/calc.html ,
I used the calculator to get this modeline:
"1280x1024" 108 1280 1328 1440 1682 1024 1025 1028 1066
Try it. Make sure you have the correct X-server for your videochipset
and are using XFree86, 3.3.3
Let us know if it works.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'd say since you are new to linux just make 2 partitions,
/dev/hdb1 2 Gig /
/dev/hdb2 100 meg swap
There are some nice things about having smaller partitons for /usr/ /var /opt,
etc.
But since you don't know yet what the end state will be, it is more flexible
to put it all in 1 big partition for now and just install what you need. If
you
make several smaller partitions, odds are you will end up with one that
is filled up and another that is totally empty, and re-partitioning is not for
the faint of heart, even with a tape drive!
For your first install, just go through it all and see how it turns out. Then
install
all the other stuff you want. When you are done, take a look at your system
and see where your space is used, what you wish your could do over, etc.
Then, format the drive and install it all again. Plan to throw one away. The
second time you do it will be much easier and your confidence will be higher
as you answer the questions.
Just my friendly opinions....

LS-120 device does not work for special installs. (any install
that requires the supplimental disk) If you have a
CDROM for the laptop, hook that up and boot from it. (in case the
CD shares a bay with the floppy as in the Thinkpads.) Otherwise
try to get a normal floppy. Once you get through the install, the
LS-120 works fine.
Unfortunately, RedHat does not support the LS-120 drive yet
for installs.

I'm far from an expert on this but here are a couple things I'm
thinking.
1. I doubt that it is a Linux configuration problem. For memory stuff
Linux just takes info from the BIOS, I think.
2. You might want to check if there are any BIOS memory shadowing or
limitations set.
3. You could consider (ACK!) installing DOS or Windows temporarily to
see what they report.
4. Or, you could just go out and buy a Quad Pentium III Xeon with 2 Gig
of RAM and forget the whole thing. While you're there pick one up for
me too please. :-)

What have you tried?
The 2nd CDROM has a different device name than /dev/cdrom.
You need to find out what it is and explicitly mount it.

I have RedHat 5.2 + 2.2.7 + gs5.50 in /usr/local, /etc/printcap set to
use the uniprint drivers. No, the colors aren't right but they aren't
wrong enough for me to bother, either. I print more technical diagrams
than photographs so color accuracy isn't paramount to me.
How to fix? edit the `up*Transfer' arrays in the .upp files. When I
tried this, I got good results with linear transfer functions: two
entries per color, {0 <max>} where <max> has to be tuned individually
for each ink. Start with max= 1.0, reduce all inks until the paper no
longer gets soaked, then start adjusting for color balance.
Note that there are *big* color shifts from paper to paper, even among
the Epson brands. Choose the paper first, then tune the arrays.
