Subject: CPU gets hot
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 15:18:54 +0100

Hello,

I installed a 486DX2-66 CPU on my machine. The only jumper-setting that
works
is CPU Clock 33.3 MHz, CPU Clock Select ( 1X or 2X) 1X and for the VESA Bus
Connector Jumper CPU Speed Select either "Greater than 33 MHz" or "Less than
or equal to 33 MHz" ( both settings work).
When I tried to compile the kernel, a message ("CPU Clock skew") appeared. I
checked the CPU and found out that it got too hot. That was why the kernel
couldn't be compiled, I think. But how could the CPU get so hot when it
wasn't used with the highest frequency possible ? ( it wasn't cooled, but I
had removed this CPU from a PC where it was run with 66 MHz and there had
also been no cooling on it )
I tried other jumper settings: CPU Clock 66 MHz, 1X, "Greater than 33 MHz"
nothing worked. Then I tried CPU Clock 33.3 MHz, 2X, "Less than or equal to
33 MHz" ...
Might the board be defect, how can I figure that out with linux ?

I would be glad to get some advice,

Beni

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS233 running Linux (kernel 2.0.36) it also has a
Yamaha-based sound system integrated into the motherboard. I configured
it as a Windows Sound System (see sound-howto) and it works fine. Maybe
that will work for you too. It also works if configured as a
SoundBlaster but then the mixer and volume sliders behave as on/off
switches instead of like real sliders.

Success,

Harry Kuiper

Problem solved!

Many thanks for the tip Shannon. Unfortunately, I've concluded that this
isn't the root of the problem :-<

Turned out that (with rhbackup - sorry, should have mentioned) that it
seems that I need a sleep time of 20 seconds between tape sessions
(configured in /etc/sysconfig/tape). All is running quite happily now :)

Many thanks for your advice

Subject: Re: Epson vs. HP

Hi,

I have a been considering a similar choice of printers and I'm afraid I
can't help you on the reliability issue. Anyway, I decided to buy an Epson
640 based on some advice I got from the web and from a few salesmen, saying
that the print quality was generally better (in color at least). However
when I got the printer I returned it imediately because the box stated:
"Designed exclusively for Windows". I was surprised since I had checked
that the Epson 600 was supported in Linux/Ghostscript. It seems that the
640 uses a different language (ESC P/Raster) which is not documented in the
manual and I suspect is kept secret (like HP's PPA, I guess). I'm now
trying to get an old, -uncastrated- Epson 600.

So, besides quality and reliability be sure to consider compatibility
issues which seem to be getting more important these days with the
proliferation of Windows-only printers.

Just one more thing: if you are in America, the version of the Epson 640
sold there may use ESC/P2. Check the web sites and contact Epson since the
web info does not seem to be very explicit. I checked Epson Portugal
(www.epson.pt) and they never mention "Windows-Only". The French site
(www.epson.fr) was more helpful.

If you find anything else about the Linux compatibility of the 640, I'd
like to hear about it.

Hope that helps,

Go to single user mode and try to umount /usr. If you still cannot
unmount the partition, you might boot Linux from your distribution media
and applying fsck on the device special file of the defective partition.

I have an Aopen network card with the Realtek TLT8029 chipset on it and it
works in RH5.2 with the ne2000-pci module. It isn't the best choice but I'm

Why does Linux still write Permission denied, although I'm root.

I am the current maintainer of tpconfig. I have just released version 2.2 of
tpconfig to support the 2.2.X kernel. It's available (along with the Readme etc)
at www.compass.com/synaptics.

You do have to run tpconfig before gpm is started. This is usually done
in an init script. You also cannot run tpconfig while X is running. The
new 2.2 version of tpconfig will also now gracefully time out if you try
to run tpconfig while gpm or X is running.

COM1 and COM3 share the same interrupt ( /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS2 in
Linux speak )
COM2 and COM4 do the same. Linux does not like this. It interacts more
closely with
the hardware. by not sharing irq's etc it is much more stable so you
will have to move
things around a bit.

Subject: How to reduce hard disk access in laptops?

Hello,

I installed SuSE linux on a NEC Versa Note laptop, and it is
running quite nicely.
The only slight nuisance is that linux tends to access the HD fairly
constantly, so that the HD is always spinning.
True, I usually have a large number of xterms and emacses lying around,
but if they are not active, they shouldn't generate all that much
traffic.

My guess is that there is some writeback process running all the time.
I have looked for something on the lines of "flush", but I have not been
able to pinpoint the problem (the documentation I have is also sketchy
on this point).

Is there some way to reduce disk traffic in laptops, to allow the HD to
spin down more often?

Thanks,

I just had to buy a new video card and now can't seem to get it to work in

support for assistance but they took a month to answer my last question
about using Win 3.1 and they were wrong! So I hope someone has tried and
succeeded at configuring the card. I see some reference to the chipset from
3D Labs in the XFree86 3.3.3 release notes -so I may have to upgrade to the
latest version - a task I dread doing using character display to download on
the net. Any assistance would be most welcomed.

See:

The ones that create the most disk traffic are the syslogd and the
disk flush deamon. If you follow the guidlines in the faq the disk
is hardly used. You might also want to turn of the autosave
mode of emacs... the machine doesn't crash anyhow.

Have fun,
