Subject: VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,0)
Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 19:22:28 GMT
Hi All,
I have a IDE attached CDROM on IDE1. Whenever I do a DMESG LOG the log is
full of the message:
VFS: Disk change detected on devide ide1(22,0)
All other messages appear to have 'rolled off' because this is the only
message in there (unless I do a DMESG right after booting the system). This
occurs when there is no CD in the drive (I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure
that this does NOT occur when there is a CD in the drive).
Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to stop it?
Also, where is the system log stored and how can I increase the size of it so
that important messages do not 'roll off' as quickly? When I use the
Linuxconf tool and select >logs->Boot messages I get a dialogue box which
says "Error No log available".
-Thanks in advance!

Do you have the maxtor 54098u8 on
http://www.maxtor.com/technology/ide%5Fcmos%5F9k.html
That's the one I've got - and I'm running into the same problems
trying to partition and format it. I've tried fdisk, cfdisk and sfdisk
(as fdisk's man page says to do).
No luck with it at all. It's on a redhat 2.2.5-15 box. Have you
received any other feedback on this?

I have a stupid question, if anybody is up for it. Not really specific
to
Linux or Windows, but rather a general hardware question.
I understand that a hard disk spins at a uniform rate (am I wrong?).
Because of this, part of the drive will read/write faster than the rest.
But what I am confused about is this - is it the inside tracks or the
outside? I really don't understand the physics of it, but if someone
could
give me a short-and-sweet answer (or a long-and-drawn-out one) I'd
appreciate it.
I would guess that the inside would be fastest because it would be
easier
for the drive head to seek tracks (less distance to travel across the
surface). But, could it also be the outside, giving a faster throughput
because more data would travel across the head? What is more important
for
a swap partition - fast seek or fast transfer?
I want to know these things because I want to repartition and put my
swap
partitions on the fastest part of the drive. Even if I won't really
notice
a speed difference, I'm just messing around with it to see what I can do
:-)
I'm probably way off with some of the things I've written above, so I'd
like
someone to correct whatever is wrong and answer the original
question....
thanks :)

Subject: Excessive hard drive paging

I have set up numerous linux systems and have not run across a system
with such excessive hard drive paging. I have installed linux on a Dell
Precision 610. This system is has an Adaptec 7890 controller with a
Seagate drive (model ST39102LW). About every 5-10 seconds I heard the
drive accessing. To see if I have some process running that is trying
to access the drive I went through and shutdown/killed every process
viewable using 'ps'. Having nothing left but those processes necessary
for the system to even run, the drive access persisted. I get the
feeling that it is something on the kernel level that is causing this to
occur. I even recompiled to a newer kernel with no avail.
My main question is this: Is there an application that would allow me
to monitor the processes (even at the kernel level) that are accessing
the hard drive? Any assistance would be appreciated, for this is
driving me nuts having to sit and listen to this machine. If there is
no help for me, my last course of action would be to get extra long
keyboard/mouse/video cables and put the thing in the closet :)

actually, the inner and outer tracks both have slower average seek times,
but the middle is the best.. the reason being if the head has to travel
from an outside track to an inside track (depending on where the last track
it read was) then it would take longer than traveling from the
inside/outside track to the middle...
on a swap file I believe you want to favor towards fast seeks because I
don't think your usually swapping large amounts of continuous data?
that's the best I can do for you from memory.. I remember reading
something about this before, I think in one of the howtos..

and what does
cat /proc/cpuinfo
say?
mine says something like:
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 7
model name : Pentium III (Katmai)
stepping : 3
cpu MHz : 560.801064
cache size : 512 KB

wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat
pse36 mmx fxsr xmm
bogomips : 1117.39
if you don't have the cachesize line, or it's wrong, chances are you a
CPU with a new stepping (model number) that the kernel doesn't know
about.
Remeber however that the 512 Kb pipeline burst cache you're talking
about is *not* in the CPU, but on the motherboard, and linux cannot know
about that. It should mention 32 Kb for a K6-II, IIRC.
Good luck,

Windows says that the model is "Zoom V.90 Data+FaxModem version 5.20
-HZ207". When you say "disable", do you mean to disable the BIOS PnP
feature or the modem junmpers? Can I force the modem to be at one known com
port / irq setting without changing the jumpers? Linux seems to detect my
modem, but when I make "Modem Query" (Kppp), it returns nothing, only blank
spaces in ATI1, ATI2... I've got that information from Windows. Can it be
used for Linux? How could I do that?

I have 2 scsi cards in my machine.
One is differential, with the root filesystem on it, and the other is
standard scsi-II. My problem is that when I connect my zip drive, my root
drive changes from /dev/sda2 to /dev/sdb2. Then I can't boot at all.
The diff card with my root partition keeps showing up as scsi adaptor 1
and the adaptec card (normal card with zip drive) shows up as adaptor
0. If I could get the adaptors to switch positions, I'd be all set, I
think,. since the drive would then always be /dev/sda and not get bumped,
instead the other drives would be bumped.
To do this, I first tried changing PCI slots. This changed the sequence in
which they initialized at boot time, but they still show up with the same
scsi0 and 1 adaptors under linux. Next, I tried recompiling the kernel so
the adapted card is modular and the other one is static, in hopes the
static card would get priority. Neither worked.
Any other ideas how I could get linux to flip-flop the scsi adaptor IDs of
the cards?

Just in case anyone reading this thread things you always HAVE TO do this,
you don't.
I installed Red Hat 6.1 onto my Abit BE6 with onboard UDMA66 (HPT366
controller chip)
with 4 onboard IDEs, all enabled.
I passed in the parameter ide2=0xAAAA,0xBBBB,11 (get values for AAAA and
BBBB from your Windows system configuration printout, or some other tool
which can detect the HPT366 chip and it's base adresses). I then added the
append="ide2=..." setting to lilo.conf, so that the "ide2=..." stuff is
automatically sent to the kernel at boot up time.
I wrote it also on my RH 6.1 boot disk. Perhaps a boot disk that can
remember arbitrary additional boot parameters would be a nice addition to
the RH 6.1 tool set.
Next up, play with 2.3.x kernels. Everything works fine, but without the
2.3.x kernels, your UDMA66 hard disk will run very slow (PIO mode, no DMA
whatsoever). It works, but it's not exactly zippy! ;-)
