I disagree that "winmodem" is a clear label. It's a jargon word
which the consumer who is victimized by the winmodem will not
recognize. The label should say "Does not work with any other OS
except Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT." Then they'll get a clue that
it's missing something.

Then add every user who needs to dial out to the dialout group.
If you run uucp, or run a cron job to fetch mail, your uucp
or mail user needs to be in dialout, too.

Subject: Cirrus Logic AGP Locking Up, Help!
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 10:02:04 -0500
I just installed RH6.0 on my system and It's locking up so hard that I have
to physically switch it off. I know it has something to do with the video
card, but I'm not sure what to do.
I have a Cirrus Logic AGP card on an AMD K-2 400. Basically, it's
recognized during installation and setup installs XFree86-SVGA, everything
works for a couple minutes, and then it locks up. It's running at
1024x768x24. Incidentally, setup set the default color depth to 32 bit.
When I set it to 24, it seemed like it took longer to actually lock.
Any ideas?

Subject: openGL Graphics card/all around graphics card recommendations?
Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 04:32:51 GMT
Hello,
I am in the process of building a "second" PC which will run Linux,
most likely RedHat 6.0 or above. One of the applications I intend to
run will do some intensive rendering/surfacing/CAD type stuff and runs
with the MESA library under Linux.
The Vodoo3 3000 cards are inexpensive enough for me to consider buying
one - and I know there is a Linux driver under development for this
chipset.
I also know that XFree86 has some support for 3Dlabs chips such as the
Permedia 2 on the ever popular under Windows Fire GL 1000. So, I am
looking for opinions from those out there with some experience in this
area on the following questions:
1. Which of these currently "supported," at least somewhat, would
give the best performance and why? (Under NT for CAD type
applications, from what I know, the answer would most likely be the GL
1000.)
2. Which of these cards would give the best overall performance?
3. Is there a better solution such as with a TNT2 or some other
chipset?
Thanks in advance!
All the best,
Matthew

I saw that linux support EZ-drive from faq and from the page:
http://www.pandemonium.demon.co.uk/linux.html . Does linux support
Maxblast ? (EZ-bios from Maxtor).
My old computer BIOS has a limitation of harddrive size of 2.1G. I
added a second disk Maxtor 8.4G to the existing system (1.6G WDC disk) as
master and 1.6G old disk as slave. I set limitation jumper at new disk as
instructed. Win98 works fine. however linux diskdruid/fdisk only
see 2.1G for the new disk. There was errors in redhat 5.2 upgrade/install
process. What is wrong? Is Maxblast supported by linux?

in fact, just the opposite, imho. its known that linux heats cpu's up

Software raid is OK, but I did find one problem when I was using it
This might be especially a problem for a large web server (file space wise
that is)
With a Normal Linux install say. Web pages (files) don't seem to chew up
much space.
Mainly I think because Linux makes < 1k clusters (probably wrong term) on
the drive / partition. and a lot of html files gif's etc are really small.
So unlike other systems with say 8k / 32k clusters the space savings are
quite a lot, if you have heaps of web pages /gifs etc.
But with the software raid the min I could go was 4k clusters, straight away
I lost quite an amount of Hdd space using the same web sites.
But yes the software raid works quite good. But I don't use it now and
haven't for about a year so maybe things have changed since I last played
with it.
I use hardware raid now, mainly because I need the reliability / hot swap
features it provides.
Hope it helps

The Apollo chipset in the VA503+ and PA2013 supports asynchronous memory/bus speeds
(so I've heard/read). I assumed that meant you could use whatever memory you wanted.
I suppose the point is that whatever memory you HAVE is the cheapest, assuming it
works. I happened to have a bunch of old EDO memory and thought it would work (slowly)
with the K6-2/350 on the FIC MB. I was wrong.

It seems, that the tape is at its end.
Try all of the following:
- Leave the tape in the drive an power-off and power-on your machine.
- mt rewind
- mt retension
- use another tape
- use another Kernel (I use 2.0.33 with the NS20 and it works great.)

Well, actually they do. Look at the box, and look for "System
Requirements". Winmodems only say Windows 9* as a requirement, while
non-winmodems also run under dos, etc...

On Linux 2.0.36 the power off worked well (on ASUS P2B-DS too), but now
with 2.2.x no power off any more.
I think the problem is to locate in the kernel and not on the bios.
