Subject: Adaptec AHA-1542 SCSI problem

I installed RedHat 5.1 using an IDE CD-ROM drive, and since upgraded to one
SCSI CD reader and one SCSI CD re-writer. I run these on an Adaptec
AHA-1542 host adapter. I've had no luck getting Linux to see this card.
Please note that my computer's PNP bios sees the ISA SCSI card along with
other cards on the ISA bus just before LILO pops up. I also have had this
setup working flawlessly in Windows for quite some time. I think I have the
hardware installed correctly.
Please help me ?
I've tried the following things:
-Turned SCSI BIOS on and off
-Issued modprobe /lib/modules/preferred/aha1542.o
***This may help for the solution: When I type this command, modprobe
returns an error that states, "ERROR: DEVICE OR RESOURCE BUSY."
-Looked through all loaded modules with "lsmod" and all active processes
with "ps -ax". I see no reason Linux would say it's busy.
-Examined boot messages. There's a line that says "SCSI: 0 host(s) detected
total". There are no errors surrounding this statement, so I'm assuming
Linux doesn't even see the card.
-Issued "isapnp". The card is not seen by this command.
Thank you in advance for your time and advice!

Good point.
I'm just more interested in changes that could be made with
minimal modifications to existing controllers, or perhaps
even in a disk device driver.
Unfortunately, most modern controllers hide the physical disk
geometry from the filesystem, and even the device driver.
Blind 4+1 parity groups would still mainly work with such
physical disks, and would mainly be equivalent to placing
parity in the same track as data; if the interleave factor is 1,
only half of a parity group may overlap at the beginning and
end of a track (and that usually into the next cylinder).

Oooph. Now, this sounds very far different from present drives,
and thus less likely to get accepted.

By the way, I believe that many drives used for databases disable whole track
buffering.

Subject: UDMA always turns off at boot
Greetings,
UDMA always gets disabled on my system during the boot process. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. This problem is not new to the 2.2
kernel; I've had it since I built the system where the first kernel was
2.0.35.
MB: Asus P2B-DS
Drives: Western Digital (see below for specs)
Kernel: 2.2.1
I've included the boot messages below, which lists the errors from the
disk driver and then the disabling of UDMA. Thanks.
/s/ Martin Ferguson

Subject: Colour depth of a X-Server
The X-Server from my Linux PC is starting with a colourdepth of 8 bpp.
If i drive Linux to runlevel 2 and type startx -- -bpp 16 it works fine
with 16 bpp. I also modified the script usr/X11R6/bin/startx as follows:
clientargs=""
# serverargs=""
serverargs="-bpp 16"
It is also working correctly.
But if i drive Linux to runlevel 3 ( Default in /etc/inittab ), xdm will
start and the changes i did in
the script usr/X11R6/bin/startx have no effect. The X-Server
is working only with 8 bpp.
How can i make the X-Server starting with 16 bpp ?
Thanks in advance,
Thomas Walz

Get a Mylex bt-950 it is very well supported (under buslogic
brand name), cheap and drivers and specs have been available
for a very long time.

Don't buy new hardware get Xi Graphics, Accelerated-X Display Server. It
will double the performance of the hardware you already have. Try our free
demo to see for your self: http://www.xig.com/support/demo2.html.

ok, here's one: Computer Depot go with the 300A, add an Amptron CS17 ($199),
and operating systems are pretty much up to you. Load Win95/8 first, then Linux
and keep Win95/8 on fat16 for easy compatibility with Linux (recommend 98, it's
designed to run on fat16 better than 95.) I can't recommend a modem, none of the
ones they have are fully compatible with Linux.
