Could you share some info on how you got it to work? I'm having a
dickens of a time getting it configured under SuSE 6.1. I'm assuming
it's because I haven't got the right combination of drivers & confix
options set up. The company's web site is less than helpful (only info
is support for Windows.)
ANY information you could share would be appreciated. (Disclaimer:
Relative newbie with Linux here, it may be something basic.)
Thanks!

APC's tend to be the biggest market leader in terms of UPSes. I have an APC
Smart-UPS 1400 on my main system, and it will provide backup for > 30 minutes
for a pretty loaded workstation system + small mail/web server (500Mhz dual
processor, 6+ disks, hubs, routers, an LCD monitor, and a second Pentium-II
233Mhz system with a single disk). On the downside, it is rather heavy, and
costs something like $600. You can get reasonable systems cheaper than that,
probably in the $200 range. Note, my experience is the really cheap UPSes that
you can get for $80 or so are not worth it (I've had 2 cheap APC's and 1
CyberPower fail on me). I believe Best systems that have serial ports actually
documents their interface and provides Linux source drivers (APC provides a
binary driver that works on x86 Linux platforms, and there are some 3rd party
packages that figured out the protocol without any help from APC).
In terms of backup, I would stay away from the HP DAT-3 drives. They seem to
last about 4-5 months for me before I have to call HP to get a new drive (I'm
about to call to replace drive #3). In the past, DLT's have had the name
recognition for reliability, though at $3k - $5k for the drive itself, plus
$100 tapes, it should be reliable. What I'm about to switch to is instead of
using the DAT every day, using a large 62gig IDE disk for daily backups, and
the tape once every few days (at present, I have about 17 gig I want to backup
every night).

I am using a parallel port scanner. I installed SANE but the tool 'find-
scanner' does not find anything. In the config file for my scanner
(/etc/sane.d/mustek.conf) the device is linked to '/dev/scanner'. But
this device isn't existing in /dev.
What symlink has to be created for a parallel port scanner?

The problem is that Cadence delivers libc5 object files with
signalscan and Synopsys delivers libc6 object files with vcs. Linking
the two into a simulator executable is impossible (I would love to be
proven wrong on this one).

Okay so... I hooked up my DAT to the internal SCSI chain with the
Yamaha at the end. The DAT is not terminated, the Yamaha is, and
everything works fine :-) So I suspect the INITIO card can't power the
terminator when the DAT is hooked up externally. I haven't tried
enabling the DAT's terminator power and connecting it externally again
but I bet that will work too.

Hi,
I have a 56KV.90 external modem and I am using
RedHat on a Cyrix300 machine that has everything
on the motherboard. It't all rock bottom quality
hardware. My query is why does netscape 4.72
download stall if I click anywhere other than the
download window. It stalls and just sits there.
I also ignorantly assumed that 2 way synchronous
communication was possible but I emailed a large
document just before starting a download and the
chart on kppp showed a negotion sequence of events
with the modem being controlled one-at-a-time by
the email send and the ftp download. The email
finally won the battle and the download stalled
after a lot of switching.
If there are any network timing settings that I
can tweak to solve this fickle problem.
Thanks

Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 06:30:28 -0400
I have decided my christmas present this year is going to be a CD writer
that *works* (as opposed to my HP 7200i CoasterMaker (tm))
I just noticed the new(ish?) Plextor drive which has technology to stop
the burn process and restart it given a buffer underrun or other related
problems. Is this done in hardware or is it strictly software? IE: If
I get this drive in Linux, will this technology work or will it have to
wait for supporting software?
I'd rather have a SCSI drive, but as this drive is $300 street (and
likely lower by now, haven't looked for prices) it's going to be cheaper
to get this drive with my existing IDE system than get a SCSI drive and
a SCSI controller.
I hope this hasn't been discussed recently, Deja.com showed nothing I
could find.

Subject: 2 Ethernet cards, system won't boot
Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 10:45:10 GMT
I've just gotten a new development system, with 2 ethernet cards, so
that it can also be used as a firewall.
The system works fine with one ethernet card. With two cards,
though, the system won't start; it seems to shift the address
of my ide drives, and consequently it can't find the kernel.
Here's the configuration:
Linux Mandrake 7.1
Asus P2B motherboard
2 750 MHz PIIIs
512 Meg RAM
2 Maxtor 40 Gig hard drives
Promise Ultra/66 controller (both drives are connected
to the Ultra/66 controller; that's what pushed me to Mandrake,
which contains a kernel with Ultra/66 support)
Soundblaster Live Value
Elsa Erazor TNT2
2 3com 3c905c PCI ethernet cards
and the usual floppy, keyboard, etc.
Because of the ultra/66, my two drives are hde and hdg.
If I put in the second ethernet card, the system claims to find
partitions at hdi and hdk. The numbers and sizes of these partitions
match the ones that should be at hde and hdg. Of course, since
it's looking for hde and hdg, the boot fails claiming that it can't
mount the filesystem.
Once I went ahead and reinstalled the OS. When I did that,
the 3c509 module wouldn't load, claiming that the device or resource
was busy. I looked at the information in /proc/interrupts and
/proc/pci and could see no conflict. According to the bios, it's
assigning the second card to IRQ 5; I see nothing else that wants
IRQ 5. Since that time, I reinstalled again with one ethernet card;
I don't have copies of the /proc listings.
I might, I suppose have conflicts with i/o ports and/or device memory.
I'd appreciate suggestions for detecting and fixing these problems.
If I install the second ethernet card, as I mentioned above, the boot
fails, claiming that it can't mount the first filesystem.
If I then use the Mandrake 7.1 boot CD as a rescue image, it allows me
to mount the partitions on hde!
Deeply confused,
