Hello,
after I had trouble with 3 SMC-EtherpowerII-Cards in our Firewall machine
I got my boss to say yes to a quad-ethernet-card. Which one runs without
troubles under Linux. I know there are quad-cards from intel and from
znyx which shoule be tulip-chipset.

if you only have one device on each IDE controller then you can configure
them both as the master and it should work ok

It's good that any people even remotely interested should ask since
this brings the "demand" into the attention of the people in stores.

ftp://www.scyld.com/network/pci-scan.c

I am not sure this driver works properly with my DFE-530TX. I am using
Red Hat 6.1 with kernel 2.2.12-20.
Is there any way to test driver-NIC cooperation?

This is like Harddisk (mostly IDE) disk errors look like.
e2fsck moves the files (or the rest of it) into the "lost+found" dir,
using the inode Nr. as names.
You should try to run:
e2fsck -cfy /dev/hdb6
to find and mark "grown" bad blocks.
Be sure your IDE-System is in Safe = Slow Operational state
(better much to slow, as too fast tuned,
'hdparm -k -d 1 -c 1 -X69' or simular would be !!!!!!!!!!!
*deadly dangerous* !!!!!!!!!)
Better: 'hdparm -d 0 -c 0' and wait ...
Good Luck.
Better use SCSI next time ...
A SCSI Bus is much easier to get reliable working than a high tuned
IDE System. SCSI disks have a Spare-List for replacing dieing Blocks
automagically.

I'm having one heck of a time getting my RAID 0 configured system to boot
2.4.2.
I'm able to boot stock RedHat 7 just fine - but I would love to run the
latest release
(wolverine) or at least the 2.4.0 kernel but can't get my machine to boot.
I have a ASUS A7V133 with Athlon 1200/266, 512 of RAM and 2 of the IBM
Deskstar drives - both on the promise controller. I have windows 2k on the
first 10
gigs and have linux on the rest. I have no problems booting RH 7 off the
RAID drives.
I've tried just about everything I can think of - if someone could sent me
their .config
file it would be appreciated..

Thanks Kris....I figured an Epson emulation might be the way to
go - but considering how old the Decwriter is, I'll have to scrounge
for some info. on checking/setting the emulation mode....if you
happen to have a source for that info., it would be most appreciated.
I haven't messed with a Decwriter for more years than I would care
to admit.
Thnx again.

I rather doubt it, unless the CPU keeps track internally. A cache
miss is supposed to be totally transparent, with the only
difference access time. No interrupt is generated, unlike virtual
memory misses. Even if there is a register, you would have to do
all sorts of gyrations to read and record it during process/thread
switching.
Even keeping track of execution time vs instruction timings would
probably fail, because of out-of-order execution, which would mask
many misses. If you want the practical effects, you could run the
program from start to completion under a debugger, recording the
actual instructions executed (or rather their total nominal
timing), and then rerun measuring actual timing. The difference
would show effective misses, including virtual, for *that
particular run*. Making sure program input is totally unchanged
between runs is not trivial.
Highly negative, I realize. If I have my head up and am wrong I
would like to hear about it. The only method I could think of
would be to have a *complete* CPU simulator running in a
*complete* environment simulator.

Subject: Which distribution to get?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am working on a new PC based product for which linux seems ideal. I
last tackled linux some two years ago using Redhat; I got it working
but lack of driver support for various bits of hardware tended to push
it onto a back burner.
However, for the new project I'm going to give it another try.
Therefore I would like advice please on which is the best
distribution. My requirements are:
Very easy to install and configure.
I need to use a TV capture card so which distribution is best for this
use (and which make of card - Hauparge has been suggested).
I need to use an 802.11 wireless PCI card so please. Yet again, which
is the best distribution (and which card make is best supported -
D-Link has been suggested).
Thanks in advance for all useful help.

Chances are you got pirated NICs. I can't believe Intel would be that
stupid. Had those NICs not gone into the same network segment, nobody would
have ever known the difference.

Check out the PAPI home page at http://icl.cs.utk.edu/projects/papi/
they claim to support AMD Athlons, and provide interfaces to many hardware
performance counters, including cache misses.
