Hello, I've bought an ms intellimouse which is ps2
compatible. Is there a simple way of making this
work on my debian system? The mouse HOWTO
tells me to change to some directory .../linux and then run 'make config'
but none of this is understood by debian.
I have another mouse which does work but I'd
prefer using the ps2 mouse. Any help is
much appreciated.

Subject: Partition Strategy in a RAID-5 Setup: Newbie Question
Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 19:09:48 GMT
Howdy Folks!
I'm setting up RAID-5 on Dell PowerEdge 2400 server with PERC 2/Si RAID
controller and 3 32GB each SCSI disks. Dell has preconfigured two
containers:
#0: 4GB (boot)
#1: 60 GB
All three disks are part of both containers. I am planning to install RedHat
7 and create the folllwing partitions:
/, /boot, and swap in container #1 and install OS there.
/home/data partition of 60 GB in container #2.
My questions: Is 60 GB partition too large? I really want one large
partition. This partion will hold all user data (It's a fileserver). I know
a few drawbacks of having single large partition as opposed to having
mulitple smaller partitions:
- Longer fsck times assuming no journaling filesystem (don't care)
- More prone to corruption due to one large i-node table (maybe not valid in
RAID-5?)
- Less convenient for tape backup (don't use dump for backup.: so don't
care)
- Any other reason I should have smaller partitions?
BTW, what is the biggest partition you folks have ever handled? And for
what?
Also I would like to have some pointers in learning more about disaster
recovery of RAID systems. Please feel free to share your experiences in
dealing with DELL Support in such incidences.
Thanks

Seems to work, but is still in beta.

You shouldn't have to recompile the kernel to use a PS/2 mouse, but you
*should* go get the kernel source, 'cause you will probably need that at
some point. I thought Debian installed the kernel sources by default.
apt-get the appropriate package. No need to recompile the kernel yet,
but you might want to try it out (with "make menuconfig", not "make
config"!) for practice.
WRT getting the PS/2 mouse to work, first make sure the mouse is plugged
in when the machine is powered-up. If no mouse is detected upon
poweron, the kernel probably won't initialize the mouse driver, and
hot-plugging PS/2 devices is not a great idea anyway. Once that's out
of the way, go to a text console, log in as root, and try "gpm -t
imps2". That should allow you to move the mouse and watch a cursor move
around on a text screen. If that didn't work, then you don't really
have an IMPS/2, but something else. If it did work, run XF86Setup and
tell it that you have an IMPS/2. Then you can log in to X using
xdm/kdm/gdm and have a working mouse. Painless, eh?

...insert what Tom W. said regarding giving enough information for other

This is apparently a RedHat/Mandrake specific problem with KDE 1.x. It
affects *only* the "system sounds" that KDE plays. To fix it, look at
/etc/sysconfig/sound . This file should contain something like
"SOUNDCARD=es1371" IIRC (don't have RedHat installed anywhere but a
server without a soundcard, can't check for sure.) What's after the
SOUNDCARD= doesn't really matter. Restart X and KDE's system sounds
should be available.
(No, I don't know why this is. Earlier versions of SuSE had a similar
problem.)

In my opinion, if you are comparing between Red Hat/Mandrake to
SuSE, stay with Red Hat/Mandrake. SuSE has recently been becoming more of
a commercial distribution with little willingness to put out any GPL'ed
versions of their version of Linux. The only ISO they have available for
anyone to download is a live evaluation one, meaning, you boot into Linux
from the CDROM, but you can't actually install it into your computer.
That is not to say that it is a bad distribution, it is in fact
quite good. However, Red Hat and Mandrake both still release GPL'ed
versions of their distributions that one can install into their machines.
If you are already familiar with Red Hat/Mandrake, then there is little
reason to go with SuSE.

Provide more information. What is the make and model of the drive,
what's in the boot log (/var/log/boot.msg or something like that)
regarding the drive, and did you compile a new kernel? Or are you using
the RedHat 7.0 stock kernel? I thought the stock kernel shipped with
IDE-CD support compiled directly into the kernel, not as a module, in
which case the "modprobe" command you tried wouldn't do anything except
possibly return an error message.
Also, is this a CD-R(W)? If so, it's entirely possible that the
installation program detected this and set your machine up to use
IDE-SCSI emulation instead of direct IDE. Try mounting /dev/scd0 and
see what you get. If this works, change /dev/cdrom to point to
/dev/scd0 and things should work happily.

Hi. I am currently running RH 7.0 , kernel 2.2.16-22. I recently installed
a US Robotics 56K Performance Pro modem PCI, model 3CP5610A.
I am having much difficulty with getting it to work. I have run the
setserial commands, etc. I have tried using kppp but when I query the modem
is says that it is busy. When run 'lspci -v' I get the following output:

sorry -- dunno much about amanda. i use cron and dump here, but i
think the general philosophical issues are the same. to wit:
you don't want/need a gui. once you've got the backup schedule set
up, the interface should be human hand + tape + tape drive. i.e.,
stick the appropriate tape in the drive before you leave for the
night, go home and forget about it. this is something that ought to
be automated as much as possible, since many humans tend to say "aww,
fuckit" when it comes to precautions -- that is when they don't
forget about them altogether. unix utilities like dump, tar, cpio,
mt, and cron make it fairly easy to automate backups.

What exactly did you try, and what is the exact text of the error
messages you got? That info would help a lot; we're not psychic here.
"LT" on a modem often means "Lucent Winmodem" which means "Go to
http://www.walbran.org/sean/linux/stodolsk and get the tarball, then
follow the directions in the README and you're set."
You can verify this by doing a "cat /proc/pci" and looking for
information that relates to the internal modem. If the words "Lucent"
or "LT" show up anywhere in there, then you should follow the advice in
the paragraph above.
If this is an ISA modem, then it's a whole nother kettle of worms. What
do the boot messages say wrt serial ports, is this PnP or does it use
jumpers, which setserial commands have you tried....

What could be wrong with the hard drive, everything is fine in Linux, but in
W98, after a period of time, it starts clicking and ticking (pretty loudly)
every few minutes (comparing to a car - as if someone pressed down the
clutch at a high speed and then in a second or so, released it again), it's
beginning to worry me.
Hoping, that someone can explain this :(
