You can actualy *fix* this, rather than using the work around (below), for
several of the Abit boards by flashing the latest BIOS - like the BH6 which I
have, that fixed it in ver QN (or QM for rev1.1)
I noticed it has also been fixed for the BX6, BX6-2, BE6-II and probally some
others.

There is a graphical program called Abit CC http://salebios.tiger2.net/~aug/
but it seems to be dependant on the 2.2.15 kernel and didn't work properly
with my 2.2.16.

Use/recompile the printerdriver as a module lp.o, so it won't block your
zipdrive from the parallel port. By insmod'ing and rmmod'ing the lp.o
and ppa.o drivers they can both use the parport without resource
conflicts.

It should be OK for the notebook. However, you should probably avoid
Gnome and KDE, try some basic window manager like fvwm* which takes less
resources.
Slackware is a very nice distribution which will make any unix
administrator feel like home. However, if you don't have any unix
background you might prefer a more windows-like, graphical distribution
like RedHat or Mandrake. But if you really want to learn Linux or Unix
Slackware is really the right choice, after doing some setting you will
know exactly which configuration files you have edited instead of hiding
details behind pointing and clicking.
> Is it true, that a "bad" / unexperienced setup of Linux can damage

It is said that some monitors can't take refresh rates which they are
not designed for. Most monitors will do some kind of power off to
prevent damage, but some monitors could get hurt. To avoid this you
should read the manual of your monitor and search for horizontal and
vertical refresh rates in the technichal description. Then enter the
correct values when configuring X.
Floppy drives also break more often in Linux than in other environments.
This is not because of a bad configuration, it has the following
explanation:
The fan in the powersupply blows out air from the computer, this means
that air has to come in somewhere. One of the places where air comes in
is through the floppy drive. The air brings dust which gets stuck in the
floppy drive and after a few years the floppy drive might break.
Other environments doesn't have this problem has the dust gets shaked
off by the movement of the floppy head at reboot.
> Is there an MS Word 97 compatible text editor available for Linux?
Try StarOffice, it is a nice and free office application. It is able to
read and write MS Word documents.

Can't say for the card. You might try aha152x.o for it.
As for the scanner, install sane and xsane. That was all I had
to do. I installed them, ran xsane, it found the scanner, and
away I went.

/usr/X11R6/bin/xvidtune is the program you want. Start it on a plain X
server (best thing to do is to just use "Xwrapper &" and then
"xvidtune -display :0" from a text console. With it, you can modify
modelines so that they result a wider/narrower/taller/shorter video
area. When you're done, just squeeze the "Show" button and it will
produce the full modeline of the mode you're currently editing on the
console. You can then paste it into XF86Config from there - just be
careful to read your laptop display's specs so you won't burn it. :-)
Cheers,

i just put it in the boot.local script, just two lines
it could go in /etc/conf.modules, i believe it is the better place for

This card works perfectly with my Mandrake 7.0 system using the OSS sound

Subject: thoughts? AMD K7-800, Abit kt7-raid, w2k, linux, RAID-1
Date: 03 Sep 2000 15:47:42 -0500
Greetings,
I'm contemplating a dual-boot Win2k/Linux system build and I'd like to
get some feedback or any red flag indications.
I understand that only one Linux distro. currently supports the
hardware RAID controller on this Abit board, but I'd like to ensure
that the rest of the hardware is all capable of running Linux in the
future.
Since Linux is so much more efficient with respect to hardware, I put
my newest box into needed Windoze service, and then roll the replaced
box into service in Linux. In that way, I expect this machine to
become a dedicate *nix box in 2 or 3 years.
Or, alternatively, could I put a Linux HD on one of the IDE
controllers, and let Win2K have full run of the 2-disk RAID-1 array in
a dual-boot arrangement?
TIA for any indications of troublesome hardware for linux support
today!
