For Dan:
Your bios evidently has LBA enabled, which means the _logical_
number of c/h/s will be (approx)1250/255/63. The Linux kernel
(v2.0.xx) and fdisk will ordinarily max out at 1024 cylinders and refuse to
allow partitions above that point.

Go into the 'expert' menu of Linux fdisk and change the number of
cylinders to the exact LBA value. Then when you return to the main
menu, fdisk will allow you to create partitions up to that limit. If you
don't know the exact number of LBA cylinders, download the free DOS
program PARTINFO.EXE from the QualComm website (publishers of
the Partition Magic software).

For Shawh:
The kernel in RH5.2 will accept the "hda=c/h/s" parameter, but only
so long as the number of heads is 16 or less. You can use the
non-LBA values (as you have) for a drive which is used only for Linux.
But in Dan's case, using the non-LBA values would constrain his FAT32
partition to around 500 Meg max if he intends to boot using LILO
in the MBR.

See the LargeDisk mini HOWTO for more details.

(Note: the newer kernel v2.2.0 or greater together with fdisk v2.9i
appears to eliminate the hassle and confusion with large disks.)

in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/setup.S or so.
Sometimes, in case of a missing keyboard, this hangs forever.
Delete this loop, or insert a timeout.

In /etc/printcap, disable the input filter for the printer. The
options are separated by colons and in my printcap, on several lines
linked by the Unix 'soft-line-break'-character "\", so I just put a
hash mark in front of the line starting with ":if=/usr/lib/apsfilt..."
and that was enough.

I've 25 AMDK6 with i430TX motheboard chipset and Linux won't install at
all in this computer. I never get such problems with intel chip from
i386 up to PentiumII.

I also won't suggest to anybody using any kind of AMD K6.

Maybe you are lucky, the right motherboard with the right AMDK6 :)

AMDK6 : Linux may work or may not ! Everyone can try at its own risk:-)
Me I don't get the choice, and it doesn"t work.

If you are lucky you can intall Linux if not your are on your own.

Don't use AMDK6 if you don't want to mess in crasy problems.

About the MMX support I may suggest you looking in the Bogomips howto.
I enclose twos rate speed for Pentium200 with and without MMX

Pentium/200 81.92 bogomips
Pentium MMX/200 400.59 bogomips

Interprete yourself but read the howto!

go into /dev and do a ls -l -a cdrom and see if it has a link to /dev/hdd
you also must make sure that you mount it do a mount point such as
/mnt/cdrom......So the command would look like

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
or
mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom

I have a couple of linux boxes that don't show the cdrom with bootup...ie
they are not bootable cdroms, but I can mount them. I suspect that is your

Subject: I want to build a junk machine
Date: 28 Feb 1999 00:16:19 -0500

Hi Everyone,

This is definitely in the "for those with too much time on their
  hands".

I've got some bits spare and I want to build a cheap machine
("junkie") to be my software lab. Since my current machine runs all
the time and has my webserver, shell accounts for friends etc it's
quite upsetting when I break things badly on it.

  What I've got is :

Pentium Classic, 75MHz. Not overclockable even to 90MHz.
64MB junk no-name non parity RAM in 4 72 pin 70 ns SIMMS.
Totally crap Samtron 15" SVGA high-res monitor (1024x768@60Hz).
1 MB Avance Logic PCI graphics card (ALG2303-ALG1300/1)
Aztech Waverider Pro32-3d soundcard (some kind of Soundblaster
  clone)
  Adaptech 8-bit non-interrupt driven (I think) SCSI adaptor (AVA-1502AE)

As you can see, it's all junk, total crap, real garbage
(particularly that SCSI card). However it all works with Linux (to
some degree) and it's all here in my apartment.

What I'd like are suggestions to allow me to a) make a machine out
of these bits and b) network it to my real machine (mihalis) which
is a little (not much) better. Obviously it's not worth spending
lots of money on other bits to reuse these seeing as performance
wont be critical, I just want the good value basic stuff.

  The minimum then is :

Socket 7 motherboard, tower case, power supply, floppy drive, hard
  disk, keyboard, mouse.

  Also eventually it would need

PCI network card, "decent" SCSI card

although I might postpone those bits for the time being.

The ultimate aim is get a hub so I can network junkie, mihalis and
also my old NeXT cube together over simple UTP but that will be a
  way off!

I've spent a bit of time looking at various sites but most of the
package deals make you buy a cpu. Conversely if you just add up all
the bits as separate purchases, it starts to come out rather
  uncompetitive even without a cpu.

I would love to hear any and all suggestions (individual components
on up to web sites you think I should get the whole kit and caboodle
  at).

Thanks,

Chris

In this case, it is Intel's _own_ media who are claiming the
PSN as an online security enhancement. Otherwise I agree with
what you say. (Yes, I know that the random number generator IS
a good security enhancement. I wonder if there has been some
miscommunication in Intel between the engineers and marketers.)

Perhaps the PSN will only be used to tie software to computers,
but I don't think the majority of consumers _want_ that.

You'll be forced to maintain an ongoing relationship with a
software maker, whereas before you could just buy software
off the shelf anonymously. (You give the company your PSN
and they give you a software serial number tailored for your
machine.)

It prevents transfer of ownership of software without the
manufacturer's knowledge, and makes upgrading hardware a
hassle. What if a company goes out of business? I don't
like it one bit. I sure as hell aren't going to put up with
it for a crappy $40 game.... (The only MS platform software
I use.)

Better yet, do a Web search for ezppp which will make the

SDRAM
with a load of disks running servers.

I was thinking of using the ASUS P2B-DS but it seems like Supermicro is
ahead with
the GX chipset but I don't see any performance numbers for either.

Thx

I would recommend the PPP-Howto document. It should be on your system or on
your Red Hat CD.
For linking your modem to /dev/modem try the program "modemtool". If your modem
works, then
the simplest way to connect to your ISP is with the program EzPPP. I don't know
the url, but you
can find it with an search-engine on the internet.

Good luck

Roeland.

I'm trying to setup my Ollivetti JP 350S printer in linux (Caldera). It
should be compatible with the HP Deskjet 500, but this doesn't work. So
does anyone know how to set it up, or where I can find some drivers?

Thanx in advantage,

I have an ISA PnP Sound Blaster AWE 64 Vaule card, I am running RedHat
5.0, with Linux kernel 2.0.24 ?
The sndconfig picks the card up and it works, but the sound seems
distorted... Its the same when I play games, or Audio cd's.. It sounds
like the channel is being over-driven... Is it RedHat, or the kernel?
If i upgraded to RH 5.2, would that make a difference?

email me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks!

Wow, this GPhoto program sounds very promising. Is it well
usable in its current version (0.2) or is it more like a
beta?

I was going to post a question here about how to install Slackware
on an old 386 laptop with only 6MB RAM. However I figured it out
and decided to offer the answer instead!

Details at http://www.sunsetsystems.com/tip-lowmem.html.

That's the problem as like the cookies, they will require it to
get support at certain websites or to get logged onto their
system for news etc. I don't like the idea of people keeping up
with what I'm doing..

Olympus DL-600 works fine using the photopc package. Many other
models use the exact same chipsets and software. (Sure does eat
batteries though.)
