Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 18:10:05 -0000

Hi! friends,

Is these anyone know that is any the Xserver's driver available for this PCI
card (Creative Lab 3D Booshee 16MB Ram)? I got my S3 VGA card working
properly, I do not know when I use the Creative Lab 3D 16M ram. Which chips
should I use or what kind of server is required?

Thanks,

Or, maybe you compiled this card as a module. If so, you'll need to update
your /etc/conf.modules so that an alias points to this module. The alias name
is eth0 if I remember correctly and I have no clue what the module would be
called, but you should be able to determine that by poking around in
/lib/modules/. The module name should be something like ne1000.o or something
similar. Then you put the line

alias eth0 ne1000

in your /etc/conf.modules. If you didn't compile it as a module, then
nevermind.

Hello,
Has anyone had experience with installing Linux (Redhat) on IBM
Intellistations? I'm particularly interested in the 6889-46U.
Specs are: Pentium II, PCI/ISA bus plus SCSI Wide
Ultra, 256MB SDRAM ECC, Wide Ultra SCSI drive with S.M.A.R.T.,
32X EIDE CDROM, don't know about audio....I think it's some SB-16 type.
I'm most interested in whether the graphics adapter (Intergraph Intense
3D Pro3400 + 3400GA on PCI slot) is supported. It is SVGA 3D
Accelerator 3D OPenGL type. I could possibly replace
it with a Matrox Millenium... Any info is much appreciated.

Patrick,

I also have a CMD640 controller (a really cheap PCI/ISA multi-function
card), and have had nothing but trouble with it. Linux does better than
most, but my secondary drive still reports short reads on imaginary sectors.
MS-DOS won't even recognize the secondary controller - I have to initialize
using Linux.

I am using RedHat (5.0), and the kernel comes with CMD640 support compiled
in (that's why you're getting the "buggy cmd640" messages - if it weren't,
you wouldn't get those messages). This looks like a real problem, perhaps
with the CMD640 workaround code, or perhaps with your system. Your best
bet is to get an add-on IDE card with BIOS, and go from there (actually,
your best bet if you're shopping is to just get a new mainboard, CPU, and
case for a couple hundred - you'll thank yourself in the morning)

Good Luck

Very interesting!

I have been doing some research on DTV (digital TV, HDTV, etc.) and
I had some interesting run-ins with ATI and other PC hardware mfg.s.

First of all, consider whether you want to spend a few hundred $$
on an NTSC-only video card. HDTV broadcasts are here now and there
may be far more interesting stuff to be done with this than plain
old TV.

Second, there is currently a battle between the TV people and the
PC people. This is due in large part to the TV manufacturers not
wanting to see the Evil Empire in Redmond run the entertainment world.
At this time, the DTV standards have not been finalized, so any
software may have to be re-written and hardware codecs may end up
being expensive landfill. Regardless of which way the PC market
goes, the lion's share of the DTV market will be TV sets and this
appears to be where the technical clout is in defining the specs.

In researching DTV tuners and decoders, I have found what appear to be
two groups. Those who have sold their soul to WinTV and those who are
holding out. I'm just guessing, but ATI's response to requests for
information may mean that they have sold out to WinTV. The TV set
manufacturers appear to be working with the other manufacturers.
Also, based upon some information from Sony, the TV manufacturers
may be planning a last minute protocol switch to cripple the outsiders.
This might include ATI.

Another interesting note: following a recent consumer electronics
trade show, where quite a few manufacturers announced their DTV
plans, ATI stock's short ratio jumped 5000%. Someone is betting
that they fall on their face big time. Other PC hardware
manufacturers heard that message and a few of them are backing away
from the proprietary TV standards. I wouldn't spend too much
time worrying about a tuner card that might end up becoming
expensive landfill.
