Has the card been assigned an IRQ? This might indicate that the
hardware is not getting the resources it needs to function properly.
Check /proc/pci for details of what the card has latched onto at boot.

Have you tried going into the BIOS and turing off plug and play OS? I'm
not sure if that will help for this problem but I've found that turning
off plug and play OS fixes a host of configuration problems. I always
turn off plug and play OS and I've never had to modify LILO. I've got
four systems, with 192, 256, 384 and 512M respectively, Redhat Linux
(I've used 5.2,6.0, 6.1 and now 6.2) finds all of the memory on all of
them.

Well, this is mostly personal opinion, since Linux supports a huge variety of
Ethernet Card, but I bought a NetGear FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Card, because
it had what I *needed* (10/100, easy setup, Linux compatability (uses Tulip
drivers)) and it was low price. I think I paid $22 after shipping for mine.
It's been working great.

The problem is that this option has different semantics on different
bioses. On some that I've had, turning it off turns off plug 'n play
support altogether. On some, it turns ON p'np negotiation in the bios
(which is not usually harmful, though it is possible for it to be).

I have an Acer Travelmate 737TLV portable, and am having a problem
configuring the touchpad to work correctly. I originally installed Red Hat
6.2, which had the 2.2.14 kernel. I recently upgraded the kernel to 2.2.16,
and now when I move my touchpad, the hard drive spins nonstop for a few
seconds while the mouse becomes unmovable, and then stops. It's possible to
move the mouse but it is very difficult and not really usable. I tried the
"tpconfig" touchpad driver version 2.2 (a popular driver provided by a third
party source) but it doesn't seem to do anything... When I was running
2.2.14 the mouse worked, but had a tendency to "float" along the screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi everybody!, I've recently bought this printer and I'm working on
trying to make it usable under Linux (SuSE 6.2).
I've downloaded and compiled the Gimp-plugin and it works fine; but I
can't understand how to make it work with other software (via lp and
ghostscript).
I've downloaded GNU-Ghostscript-5.50 and compiled with the stp driver
provided with gimp-plugin but I'm not able to set up a good printcap and
aspfilter to make the printer work.
Suggestions, files and links are welcome :-)
Thanks!

I have a Dell OptiPlex GLX 5133 with 32MB RAM, had it working with
RH6.2, and now with SuSe6.4
Sound works, I don't use the onboard(integrated) network-interface, but
installed mine
own (ISA)network-card. Got a SCSI-card (PCI) with attached a UMAX
scanner (all working)
Mail me if you want certain config-files (conf.modules etc. etc)
PS: i use mine Dell as networked-(guest)pc, not as bare X terminal
(i don't have a Dell-monitor)
But if you can get it working as a PC, you should be able to get it
working as a X terminal! :-)

Here is my config:
Kernel: No IDE/ATAPI cdrom support,
SCSI emulation support (built in),
Parallel port IDE device support (paride.o),
Parallel port ATAPI cdroms (pcd.o),
Parallel port generic ATAPI (pg.o),
Shuttle EPAT/EPEZ protocol (epat.o),
Parallel port support (parport.o),
PC-style Hardware (parport_pc.o),
SCSI cdrom support (sr_mod.o).
All my CD-drives use SCSI emulation now, so the CDROM-drive has to be mounted
on /dev/scd0, the CD-Writer on /dev/pcd0 (for read-only access).
Typing
insmod parport
insmod parport_pc io=0x387 irq=7
insmod paride
insmod epat
insmod pg
as root will light the drive up.

And what do you mean by "an io".

Your question is vague. Why not use the correct terms instead of baby
talk!
The kernel has a hard limit NR_REQUEST of how many block requests it
will queue on a block device at a time. There is a 2-1 split preserved
in favour of reads against writes on that queue too. But each driver
code independently can take requests off that kernel queue as fast as it
likes, and pass it to the driven device as fast as it likes. And the
kernel limit is changeable by simply changing the constant value and
recompiling (as I recall, the default kernel limit is 64, but go check).
And the size of each block request is variable too. The kernel can and
does aggregate adjacent - or even nonadjacent - requests into one
according to rules defined by the individual drivers. This happens as
requests are passed to the driver queue.
So I don't grok what you mean. Look at ll_rw_blk.c. All will become
plain. Or at least part will ...

Subject: Installing RedHat 6.2 on A7V and Athlon problem...solved.
Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2000 19:38:52 GMT
Greetings,
THE PROBLEM:
I had a heck of a time installing RedHat 6.2 on to a new ASUS A7V
motherboard and Athlon Thunderbird CPU.
The installation would proceed normally, then, when the system was
rebooted, so it would run on the newly installed OS, I'd get:
...Disabling CPUID Serial Number...General Protection Fault:0000
CPU:0
EIP... and the status of all the registers.
No matter what options I tried to use, the same thing would happen.
THE SOLUTION: (not optimal, but worked for me)
I still had my RedHat 6.0 CDROM, so I did a default install of RedHat
6.0 on to the system.
Then I put the RedHat 6.2 CDROM in the system, and copied the Kernel
2.2.14 souce onto my system.
I then compiled the Kernel with the defaults, with the following
exception:
Disable CPUID ...[Y/n/?] I said NO!
Then the traditional kernel installation, updating lilo, and rebooting.
Now the system works fine.
I sure wish RedHat will see that this is a problem, and change the
pre-built kernel sources to not have the kernel try to disable the CPUID
if the CPU is not a PentiumII/III.
I sure hope this message might help others like myself, that had
problems tryings a default RedHat 6.2 installation on this hardware,
Sincerely,
Robert Flash
