Hello, I'm french so all apologies, my language is too bad
I have the suse release 5.3 and I can't setup my I740 graphic card
altough i download the last xsvga package named:
xsvga-3_3_3_1-3_i386.rpm.
I have installed this package but neither in XF86config nor in SAX i
don't see my graphic card in their list, what can i do ?
My C++ teacher said me that he configured perfecty his i740 card with
this new package so it's obviously possible !
Please help me, I have to make a little game in C++ but now i can't do
it and i'll have to give it to my teacher on Tuesday so please help me
!!!
Thanks

Veldrane,
This is a common problem:
>From RH ftp site or mirrors search for
XBF-i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm
for RH 5.x install it as README.i740 describes and you can work
fine
with X. Also you need the xf86config-glibc-1.0.0.i386.tgz this
program
support the XBF_i740 X server.

I installed Linux last weekend onto my master drive, which went smoothly
enough; however, after the install was complete my slave hard drive (an 11
month old Western Digital Caviar 5.1 AC35100L) went south.
It now reports S.M.A.R.T. status as bad on boot up, and scandisk can't
read/repair the "end" of the drive.
Does this seem like an extremely unfortunately timed coincidence, or could any
part of a Linux install cause something like this?
I'm sure it's the former, but thought it's worth asking, just in case...so I
don't fry another drive. <g>

Just to make it clear, this is what I'm advocating -- allowing the
kernel to use the full amount of physical memory -- not to allow
programs to play segmentation games.
As I understand it, the kernel at present maps all of physical memory
into the kernel's virtual address space. The kernel reserves about 1
GB for its own use. By default, it allows 2 GB address space for each
process, which leaves 1 GB of address space for RAM. This can be
tuned by tweaking a header file and recompiling the kernel, but the
upshot is that there's a linear tradeoff between largest process
address space and maximum usable RAM (so a common tradeoff is 1 GB
address space and 2 GB RAM).
2 GB RAM is a satisfactory virtual address space for a single process
for most purposes, but 1 or 2 GB RAM is not a satisfactory upper limit
on RAM today.
(One possibility might be to configure the extra RAM as a RAM disk and
swap to it. This isn't completely satisfactory either, since a
particular job mix might well need more VM total than the amount of
RAM. The right idea here would be to use multi-level paging of some
sort where pages are first kicked out to the RAM disk and only then to
other swap spaces. Then there's the whole issue of how to cache pages
from memory mapped files.)

This may be off topic, but is USB going to survive? Doe anyone know of a
discussion group that is talking about this? I have been reading a
number of sites that are stating it is a failure. (ie Tom's hardware
guide at
sysdoc.pair.com) I like the idea of USB. I am about to buy a new
computer and wanted to know more about it. Like the limits on the number
and speed of devices on the line. I also thought there was supposed to
be two USB connects of varying speed on a single computer, but when I
look I seem to only see one on them.
Yes I use linux redhat and Win98. I am just looking for some place on
the web that will be a good source of information.
thanks.

Go to the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config (edit this
file with emacs)
Search for Depth (by pressing CTRL-S)
You find the word depth in a section caled SVGA
Behind the word depth is a number, 8 in you case. Make 16 of it
and voila!

Just partition the disk with fdisk (new primary partition 4).
Then make file system with 'mkfs.ext2 /dev/hdd4' if you want ext2 file
system or 'mkfs.msdos /dev/hdd4' if you want msdos file system.

Don't know if this helps, but I have the same problem with my video card. I
have on of those Cirrus Logic 5428 on the mother bord jobs. Thing works great
in Winders at 16 bit color up to 800 x 600, but will only address 8 bit in
Linux. Seems the only way to address this card is with 16 bit color is with
something called liner addressing. According to some obscure file I ran into
the only way to use liner addressing is with less than 14mb of memory. Since
my box has 56MB I'm stuck with 8 bit color. This may apply to other video
cards as well.

ATS80=1 does do the MLPPP, and you have to add it to your chat script
that line should read
'OK' 'ATS80=1D5551212'
obviously substitute the number you have to dial, and make sure your
pap-secrets file is also set up

Hello;
I'm running 2.0.33 and I need to compile a kernel with support for a
dual P5 200 on a Tyan Tomcat IV mainboard. I noticed in the Makefile
there are two lines that reference dual CPU support.
SMP = 1
SMP_PROF = 1
Do I need to uncomment both? What does the second one do?
Also. Does anyone know how to inhibit the screen blanking? It stops my
monitor from shutting down when the BIOS puts the system in standby. I
can set the system to go into standby before the screen blanks and its
fine, but the time is really too short, I think ten minutes.

: Is there any need for a percentage > 0 for this option? When is the

Here's a case why you might need that reserved space: Your disk has
filled up. You see some files that could be compressed because they
are not heavily used, so you type "gzip foo". Oops! You need to
temporarily store both the original and compressed versions while
the compression is being done. It's insurance against somehow painting
yourself into a corner than you can't easily recover from, even as root.
That being said, you can specify -m0 and it works. I do this routinely
with Zip disks, on the assumption that I can always use space on the
hard disks if needed, but take the default reserve on hard disks.
One other word of advice: Use the -c option on mke2fs to check for
bad blocks on the disk; this protects you against bad blocks and
accidently specifying more cylinders than actually exist on the disk.
I speak from painful experience here.

Hi! Did you ever find the answer to your
