CONSIDER: pre built Linux freindly systems if your not confident
builting your own... can't give you a name but several companies do sell
linux preloaded on linux pcs
DO GET: an APG motherboard and APG video card.. no reason not too!
DO GET: lots of RAM, linux will make intellegent use of this.
DO GET: a distribution that is 2.2 "kernal ready" , non ship 2.2 yet as
far as i know
DONT BE SOOOOO AFRAID OF BUILT IN STUFF ON THE MAINBOARD--- just make
sure that it Can be disabled and is supported first, although i dont
think much of that stuff is. I DO know that the cyrix media GX built in
video is supported by linux, if you go that way www.cyrix.com
DONT THINK: ide is that bad, for simple computers IDE is fine, a 11ms
IDE drive and a 11ms SCSI drive would be very very similar...
consider the matrox G200 APG carrds www.matrox.com
check out a hardware compatibilty list--- its the key.
Everything on the list is good, everything you cant find on a list is
probably a bad idea... unless it emulates something on the list well.
i.e. many printer emulate HP printers.
a decent list resides at www.suse.com--- this one is for suse linux but
all dist are similar
also for video www.xfree86.org

Please Help!!
I have followed the how-to's to the letter, I have used the Linus
pocketbook.
I cannot get the 2.2.2 kernel to work correctly under RedHat 5.2.
I compiled the kernel, removed static links to linux, I have made the
modules, made the modules_install.
I have moved the zImage to /boot.
When I reboot and try to boot the new kernel, it causes a total system
reboot..
In the /boot directory there is still initrd etc files...
Is there an updated version of the kernel how-to that focuses primarily on
redhat5.2 and the latest kernel build?
I have followed the how-to to the letter and it doesn't workj with redhat
5.2
Please help!!
Thanks!

Not very likely. I have had WD drives self destruct from W95. Mine used to make a
loud "Thunk!" when W95 started up. This has since been fixed in a firmware
upgrade. Your HDD probably had this upgrade on shipping. All of my IDE HDDs are
WD "Caviars", I have four of them from two years to six months old... they all
run 24/7. Other than that one dying 18 months ago, no problems.
To get an RMA from WD you will need to run their WDDIAG software or some such to
get the error codes before they will let you ship it back for replacement. Other
than that they are very prompt about shipping you a replacement drive. Be sure to
read their shipping directions and follow them to the letter.
P.S. Their diagnostic SW is available for download from their website... you will
have to boot in to DOS or something to use it.

Not sure what you mean "likes it better" other than the fact that it
defaults to that irq. Are you saying it works better on that irq?

Thanks for the try... I 'think' I got past that one...
I downloaded the 0.16.4-1.RPM ...
This seems to have installed 'better' than the 0.16.5 version...

So...
Mar 7 09:14:13 diald[1120]: Running pppd (pid = 1138).

almost sounds like 'dynamic' is NOT really supported. I started the
diald connection with a 'nslookup', which is a UDP request. But, the

The reason most of that stuff in the database is because it should all
work without any special drivers...
ALL IDE hard drives should work
ALL ide cd-rom readers should work

OK if it says EIDE then ATAPI will work. EIDE-means ATAPI-2, its the
same thing... ATAPI is just a more technical name for it. ALSO NOTE
THAT people often say just IDE not EIDE... ide and eide can be regarded
as the same... ide is just eide with a slower tranfer rate, its fully
compatible with all mainboards that have 'eide'
OK here, all modems should work except for Winmodems. If they make PCI
modems get one (do think they do do they?) Also get PCI if you can in
general, saves a little work,...
If you get something like a modem that has windows Plug and Play,
disable the plug and play and set the irq and DMA manually... read the
serial howto and the modem howto and the suse manual
check the video card against http://www.xfree86.org
have fun
oh yeah, get as many PCI slots as you can. IF you get super-7 based
mainboards the max you can get is 4 (which is fine) the slot 1 boards
have even more...
Just dont get less than 4.
Getting an agp video card frees up a PCI slot so do it if you plan to
spend over $100 on the card.

This is a message regarding a Linux/modem web page at:
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
Thanks to all of you who have supported this page in the past,
it was mentioned in a ZDnet article this week; and the server hits
have skyrocketed.
I'm a little bit worried that there are too few modems identified
as "OK," though. I've been very conservative about marking modems
"OK"-- generally only modems tested by Linux users make the cut.
If you are using a modem with Linux, please check the list to see
if I am missing any information on your modem.
Thanks for your help!

Use the jumpers to disable PNP. Isa cards with "plug and play" use a
crude plug and play that only works (i think) with windows OSes. It
just sets you com port and adress settings at what it wants and tells
windows what that was, it doesnt negotiate like real PNP (read PCI
cards) does.
read the Serial and Modem HOWTOs... its not so hard. Watch for a
conflict with your mouse.

As supplied from RH, the kernel is 2.0.36pre7. There are update RPMs for
the 'release' 2.0.36 on the RedHat updates site.

Scanner Access Now Easy (http://www.mostang.com/sane/). For the Umax 6EG, it

includes an older version (0.74), and there are rpms for the current version

Conversely, you can change your printer port to irq7. Do this
in bios. If you are using the 2.2.* series kernel, your
printer will then be /dev/lp0.
I tried it both ways, and found that the Soundblaster
likes it better on irq5.

Don't think that everything will work correctly when the K7 comes out.
There might be glitches. Remember the K7 means a new interface bus and a
new set of support chips. Things might be fantastic but we won't know for
sure until the iron hits the market.
A good interm solution might be to find a K6-3 system. With the built in
L2 cache this might be a nice alternative to a CELERON based machine.
Just make sure you check to make sure someone is already running Linux on a
K6-3 first.

Does anyone know how I can get my VT/console output to go to my VGA card,
while having the input come from a serial link?
I can get both input and output to go onto the serial cable, and
I can get both the input and output to work the ``tradidional way'' (keyboard
port / VGA card) but I need to know if and how I can get the serial cable
to transmit the keyboard information.
The problem is this: I really like sun5 keyboards. I haven't found one
that will work with a PC. So, I could grab an IPX and plug my sun5 keyboard
into that... then link the IPX with my computer with a serial cable.
