Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 03:49:36 GMT

I'd like to use hardware RAID with my Linux webserver. The new Intel board
L440GX+ has dual channel SCSI onboard (AIC-7896), and supports a 0 channel
add-on board called the ARO-1130 RAIDPort from Adaptec. This will give me
striping and mirroring etc. I've ordered the system, but realized I had
better make sure there are drivers available.

Will Linux support this configuration? Thanks much!

Linux uses the 386 or higher, thats just the way it is. The 386 was a
gaint leap over the 286 and has instructions that make linuxs multi
tasking work as well as it does.
Linux has been ported to several chips like PowerPC but not to 286... a
286 port would be difficult and pointless...

IF you look im sure you can get a nice 386 or 486 mainboard and cpu and
ram for like $15-$40... not so bad is it?

well, compaq has a long tradition of reinventing the wheel whenever
they they can. I suppose it's just common sense not to expect their
hardware to work. You're right though, Redhat is not nec. helping by
trying to make the install 'too easy'. Have you ever tried to install
NT? I imagine that this sort of install is what redhat is aiming for,
which is terrible.

this seems to be one of the mysteries with PC's. An external uses a
serial port, an internal modem replaces a serial port.

I run an AIWP AGP card and a dxr2 board and haven't had any hardware
clashes with it although for Linux it is quite useless as I haven't
found any way of using the card in the OS, just Yuk95.

I have researched everything I can find on this problem, and still
can't get around it. The CDROM HOWTO describes configuring the SBPCD
driver (which is what is picked for my CDROM), and supplying the
string "0x230,SoundBlaster" to it. I try this and other candidates
for the port address, and still nothing works. I use 0x220, because
that's what the SoundBlaster CONFIG program thinks its IO address is,
and I use 0x630, because that's suggested by the parameters supplied
to CDMKE.SYS, the DOS driver. No dice.

Has anyone here successfully installed RH 5.2 using such a
configuration? Has anyone succeeded with some other distribution,
such as maybe Caldera? Should I give up and be happy with Bill Gates?

I am installing off a EIDE CD ROM but I really feel this is not the problem.
I have tried every mod. in all the FAQ's I could find for SCSI controllers

One thing I have noted has been omitted. You should type mkdir /mnt/win and
then you can type mount -t vfat /dev/hd?? /mnt/win
(?? being drive and partition number i.e. hda1 for Drive C and partion 1)
Now you can type, cd /mnt/win and you will see your 32bit FAT partition.

My intellimouse has 5 buttons. Two are synthetic buttonpresses for
the scrolling behaviour.

left button = button 1
right button = button 2
wheel (click) = button 3

And with a few lines in my XF86Config file, see
http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/

wheel (down) = button 4
wheel (up) = button 5

The only thing that is kind of annoying is that I sometimes press too
hard when scrolling the wheel, and end up pasting gobs of text
somewhere.

However, if I try to use chat, it doesn't do crap. Can anyone give me a

Also, as an entire script, I've used:

pppd /dev/modem 57600 connect '/usr/sbin/chat "" ATDT2920390 CONNECT'
noipdefault defaultroute lorddane guess

Also, how would I setup the primary and secondary DNS? And, again, why
won't it even INIT my modem? I've even tried that ppp config thing in

When 2.0.30 was current, ATAPI disk drives were still quite novel, and
the kernel did not support them, in fact it tried to treat them as
CD-ROMs.

You should really upgrade to more recent kernel. Perhaps upgrading to
Slackware 3.6 is the easiest path.

I have the Zoom 56K dual mode, and my initialisation string is

I hope this helps: it may not, as I didn't have to do anything special

Using the Slackware 3.6 dist with an unmodified SCSI.S kernel image.

previously on a 750 meg partition). The resulting messages on boot are:

However, when I try to actually mount the CD-ROM device (using: mount -t

I've no idea where I should begin looking... suggestions?
