Thinking of using an AOpen PG128 AGP card for a RedHat Linux 5.0
box. It is an S3 Trio3D 4Meg card.
Anyone using it? Any problems?

Yes. As a matter of fact, I have a Quantum AtlasII 4.5G drive attached
to the same controller as well and recognized correctly. The controller
reports for the Quantum C/H/S=~1022/~120/32.

This is _not_ a language question. It's a communications protocol question.
I would get Absolute FTP from www.vandyke.com
which has a nice GUI interface, and let it do it.

I've got the P2B-DS and it was a snap to get the AIC78xx conroller running. All
I did was configure the kernel to have scsi support, and then selected the
AIC78xx driver option. I've only got a scsi cd-rom on it now, but am waiting to
get my fingers on a 10k rpm SCSI drive soon.
In general I can tell ya it's a GREAT motherboard!

The first time I tried to install Linux I had something similar occur.
Somehow my 2 GB hard drive had a 3GB partition on it. Before I installed
Linux it was a 2GB partition. I had to do an fdisk and reformat before the
drive was usable again.
In my case the problem was I had a pretty old Linux distro (maybe even a 1.2
kernel) and the drive I lost was formatted FAT-32. My guess is I that
something (LILO?) saw a FAT drive and wrote a FAT-16 entry on a FAT-32
partition.

Redhat has a how to for upgrading 5.2 to the new kernel, it outlines all of
the packages you need to update, and walks you through it.

Sometimes when I run Midnight Commander it'll hack away at the HD as if it's
loading, the screen will go black but the only thing that appears is a '\'
or sometimes a '|' in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
When this happens I can't enter anything and so switch to another vc to gain
access to shut it down. It lets me log in ok but when I try to shut it down
it just hangs after the broadcast message. Also, if I try and run mc from
another vc after the first one crashes the same thing happens.
Getting really tired of switching the box off.......

Exactly, but in the case of the Xeon the hardware *can* address 64 GB
or RAM.
> to actually NEED that kind of memory, you must have some serious data
> to crunch. our news server /w 64 meg ram runs our news server going

Yup. I'm not talking about 3 GB of netnews a day. That's about 120
MB/hour, or 33 KB/sec, which is peanuts. I'm talking in the range of
10-100 GB/hour (and up) using a high end RDBMS and other high end data
warehousing tools. At this point, we're talking 3-30 MB/sec. 4-16
Xeon's can do a pretty good job chewing through that kind of data, if
they can keep their feeds busy. That means that memory thrashing is a
no-no.
Essentially, I'm talking about entirely different applications here
than most people are used to dealing with.

Subject: problems with sound on Acer Extensa 386T notebook

Hi out there,
I have a big problem with my Acer Extensa 368T notebook. It apparently
comes with an Yamaha OPL3-SAx onboard sound chip, and I generally CAN
play sound (.au, mp3 etc.).
But when starting/stopping a music output several time, the hole system
hangs and I have to hard reboot (switch off by pressing on/off button 4
sec).
I feel very disappointed that sound output under windows 9x runs fine
with plug'n play-settings (see below), but not with linux!
I tried
- several kernel versions (2.0.3x -> 2.2.2)
- OSS/Free
- commercial OSS ( up to 3.92 compiled for 2.2.2 UP)
- several card types, e.g.
- Yamaha OPL3-SAx as described in linux/Documentation/sound/OPL3-SA2
in linux kernel doc
- WSS (windoze sound system)
- Generic Yamaha OPL3xxx
- Generic SB
- ad1848
- several configurations, e.g.
- MSS base 0x530 (windoze setting), 0x534
- SB base 0x220 (win setting), 0x000 (disabled)
- base 0x370 (win setting)
- MPU base 0x330 (win setting)
- DMA 0 DMA2 1
- DMA 1 DM2A 0
- DMA 0 DMA2 7 (windoze setting)
- DMA 1 DMA2 3
- DMA 3 DMA2 1
- IRQ 5, 7, 10
- with and without isapnp
What could it be? Maybe some of you can help me.
Thanks in advance,
-Axel.

Hi,
I installed Slackware 3.6.0 last week, and I have a laptop with a Xircom
10/100+56k6 modem PCMCIA card. The problem is: there's no eth0 device!
I had Redhat 5.1 installed a couple of months ago, and my ethernet card
worked then... I installed it via ftp, so it was detected and configured
by the Redhat setup program... so I know it is possible to use the card
under Linux.
When I look at the modules, it says pcmcia-cs is loaded. When i try to
start pcmcia services, it says cardmgr is already running. That looks
fine to me. Also, when I look at the pci information (cat /proc/pci) it
says it recognized Toshiba ToPIC97 cardBus controller (which is also
listed under PCMCIA Socket in my Windoze 95 device manager)... that
seems fine too.
I hope someone can help me with this one, I read all the HOWTO's
concerning networking and ethernet-cards, but I couldn't figure out what
the problem is...
Regards, Peter.

Hmm. Perhaps playing with the lp driver setting with the tunelp

The 895Cxi is known to work "at least basically" with Martin
Lottermoser's "hpdj" PCL3 driver. This driver is, I think, included
in some of the Ghostscript 5.x contrib RPMs out there, or install it

This is your problem. Your printer might be at /dev/lp0, or your
parallel port might be configured to where the Linux driver can't find
it, or you might just not have the lp driver loaded.
Are you running Linux 2.0 or 2.2? For 2.0, see the Printing HOWTO.
For 2.2, see /usr/src/linux/Documentation/parport.txt
