Subject: PROBLEM SOLVED! cdrecord and HP7500e
Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 00:06:55 GMT

Hi,

I just burned my first CD-RW under Linux with cdrecord 1.8a22 and a
HP7500e and I want to share the solution with you all.

Cdrecord was getting from the command structure only the bytes that
needed to be sent to the device according to the group the command
belonged to. Since "inquiry" belongs to group zero only six bytes were
used to form the CDB and the rest were garbage. The patch I am
attaching to this message sends the right amount of bytes from the
command structure but then fills up the rest of the CDB with zeros.

There might be other problems, I don't know that much about CDBs and
ATAPI and have not found pointers to that type of information on the
net. Maybe zeroing the rest of the CDB is a poor idea. Anyhow, *IT
WORKS*!

Just unpack the source and 'patch -p0 < patch-cdrecord-1.8.a22.txt' from
the main directory (cdrecord-1.8).

Have fun!

Bye, Eduardo.

Dell has offices in Illinois and by law is required to charge sales tax
on computer shipments to Illinois.

The net tax is simply greed, nothing more.

You've got a few things confused. A buyer never pays sales tax. The seller
pays it. This is an important distinction because, technically, Illinois
has no sales tax. We have a Retailers' Occupation Tax (ROT) as sales taxes
were unconstitutional when it was enacted. Illinois custom does allow retailers
to itemize it on the invoice for the customer's information, but the customer
has no recourse if he believes the store made a rounding error which likely
won't be made when it's time to pay the tax.

All retailers, whether in state or out-of-state, pay ROT on sales to Illinois
customers if they have a nexus in the state, like a shipping point. Not every
office of a company counts as a nexus, though.

Dell's a big company and they probably have a nexus in many states.

Only when a company does not have one would the buyer be required to pay
a tax. That would be a use tax, not a sales tax.

ddi you have to rekompile yer kernel to support the drive when you installed

(i don't have much experience with this, but its worth a try, right?)
try to rekompile yer kernel, adding support for the filesystem available...

Winmodems do not work under Linux. They are controlled by software within
Win95/98 rather than by hardware.

btw, set the monitors refresh and such manually in XF86Config file, in

This is what he wrote:

Hi,
I have just installed an old hard drive (Western Digital 170MB IDE) that
I had laying around into my Linux box. The drive is the second drive in the

the recently installed drive:

hdb: drive not ready for command
hdb: status timeout: status=0x80 { Busy }

What do these series of errors mean? What is causing them? I can't do

drive works fine, because I have no problem using it in Windows.

Hi!

I have a Quantum Fireball ST6.4S USCSI harddisk which is not detected by the
linux kernel. All other devices on the SCSI bus are decteced by the kernel!
There is no problem under dos/windwos with the fireball drive! I also see
the Quantum drive listed in the SCSI bios at startup!

I tried the disk on two different scsi controller (adaptec 2940 and
tekram-symbios lvd). The bus is terminated and set up correctly and the
Fireball disk is listed in the SCSI Bios and I also can use the drive under
DOS/Windows without any problem!

I tried Suse and Redhat linux... I also tried to boot with the EIDE boot
disk and load the correct SCSI modul... again the Fireball drive is not
recognized by Linux!

Any ideas? Should I try to lowlevel format the drive?

Thanks!
Martin

Illinois doesn't require the merchant to itemize the tax. It is an interesting
question. A buyer has no actual way of knowing if a retailer has a nexus in
Illinois and pays ROT and whether he's supposed to pay use tax.
