Hi:
I have a Solidyear wireless keyboard model number ACK-571. It also has a
built-in pointing device for 8-direction cursor control. The keyboard works
fine but the built-in pointing device does not. The infra-red port uses the
USB port instead of PS/2.
Not sure if the problem lies with the Infra-red device or the USB device?
Their website is:
http://www.solidyear.com/wireless.htm
Thanks for any tips.

I have the same problem. I don't have a solution. But you don't have to
reboot.
You have only to wait every time. On my System 2-5 min.
If you have a Solution... post me.

Subject: Re: Targus USB-PS/2 Scroller Mini Mouse
Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 12:01:27 GMT
In my earlier message regarding whether anyone managed to get the scroll
working on this mouse I also asked:
"Is there any way I can configure [my XF86Config] options in the Pointer
Section so that /dev/mouse is the device if I want to use my ThinkPad's
pointer and /dev/input/mouse0 is the device if I want to use USB? Even
better, is there any way to configure it so that it automatically
detects whether the USB mouse is plugged in and switches accordingly?"
One thought I had was, would it be possible to (i) grep my
/var/log/messages output for a message that is indicative of the USB
mouse having been inserted, for instance:
"kernel: input0: USB HID v1.00 Mouse [KYE Genius USB Wheel Mouse] on usb1:2.0"
and (ii) make my XF86Config file a symbolic link, that could be pointed
to an XF86Config file with either /dev/mouse or /dev/input/mouse0 as the
pointer device and (iii) prior to launching X, redefine the symbolic
link to point to the appropriate file depending upon whether the USB
mouse message is detected? I guess there could be timing problems
(there may be a lag writting messages out).
Additionally, are any messages generated upon inserting or removing a
USB device while running (I should check myself but I haven't yet)? If
so, would it be possible to (i) have an "at" or "cron" job periodically
search for the messages and (ii) switch the symbolic link and relaunch X
following a change in USB device status (thus providing a primitive form
of plug-n=play or JINI-type functionality)?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

It set up fine for me under Mandrake 7.1. I even had it install XFree 4.0 and
didn't have any problems. The only problems I had was lack of enough IRQs.
MAXX takes 2, SB 128s and above take 2, 2 HD & 2 CD/CDRW, NIC Card takes 1,
USB takes 1, PS2 Mouse takes 1. So had 4 devices overlapping on 2 IRQs.
Swapped the MAXX card for a older ATI XPert 128 I had to free up 1 of them.
Mandrake recognized the new video card on reboot and set it up flawlessly.

Hello,
I have a Miro PCM20 sound card (with radio). This one works fine
if I load Windows before I start Linux. It seems that Windows
change some setings on the card which survive even a hard reset
(but not a power off). Can someone tell me whether I can do this
without Windows? Is it possible to do this with the DOS program
which is included with the card. Or is it possible to do this
directly in Linux?

I have an Intel Pentium 233MMX and the difference between 64MB 128MB was
like going from my old 486 DX-2 66 to the Pentium 233. I cannot vouch for
160MB though but I know 128 is well worth the effort. Especially if you
are using one of the newer pretty window managers... As a general rule RAM
beats CPU. You spend much less time disk caching.... and even with ATA 100
disks that is a slow process versus pulling from RAM...

I copied my Maxtor drive (root) on to the IBM and everything seems to
be working fine (both running at UDMA5 with no errors - the Maxtor's a
little slower though). So the whole problem comes down to the Maxtor
not booting into UDMA5 which i'm going to try and resolve with their
tech support hopefully. Thanx for your help.

"A DOS-based server" means a server running on DOS. Do you mean you want
a file server for DOS clients? It's unclear what you intend to do with
the thing, and that's especially important in advising you about whether
such a low-end system will be adequate.
Both the 40MB hard disk and the 4MB RAM are pretty tiny by today's
standards. Most modern full distributions just won't install on anything
that small. That gives you two choices:
1) Go with a stripped-down distribution. You MIGHT be able to get
Slackware or Debian to install on that system, or there are various
distributions designed for limited-capacity systems (mostly floppy
boot systems). Somebody else posted references to a couple.
2) Use an older distribution. If you pick a distribution from, say,
1996, chances are it'll install on your system. Of course, you'll
then lack all the modern amenities. You might still be able to
install a few updated packages (like Samba), though.

Are these 72 pin SIMS ? if so, watch out, they usually need to be installed

Hi,
I'm looking for an external case for two IDE devices (if possible,
CDRW+hd). It should connect to the parallel port, and be supported
under Win 95, 98, NT and Linux.
Any idea where to find such a beast? If possible in Europe? If this is
not possible, I might take a case for an CDRW only.
Thanks a lot!

That isn't the latest version -> I believe there is a

download that (from the same place) and it should work. That's what
