Veldrane,
   This is a common problem:

>From RH ftp site or mirrors search for
XBF-i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm
for RH 5.x install it as README.i740 describes and you can work
fine
with X. Also you need the xf86config-glibc-1.0.0.i386.tgz this
program
support the XBF_i740 X server.

Do you have a model number? The two ISA PNP Commwave modems that I know

I just finish upgrading form kernel 2.0.36 to 2.2.2. I had an old functional
logitech busmouse under 2.0.36, but, when I upgraded to 2.2.2 my mice stop
working. I have configure the kernel for a none serial mouse and selected the
Logitech bus mouse in the mice section.

Does anyone know how I can get the mice working again? If that can help, I am
using SUSE 6.0 distribution.

Also, I am getting an error with can not locate module char-major-14! I have
no idea what that suppose to mean...

Thanks.

I have been trying to get my screen to run in 1024 mode but keep getting a
virtual screen. i am using a matrox Mystique and a SAMPO AlphaScan 511
monitor. Being a newbie to Linux, I have tried the Xconfigurator 4 or 5
times now and am getting different resolutions etc but all on a virtual
desktop, How can I have 1024 without scrolling the screen? I have tried the
virtual desktop setting in Xconfigurator but it doesn't seem to have any
effect. This is probably a user interface problem :)

Thanks for any help given

"Long filenames" are an extension of FAT (FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32) which is
commenly known as VFAT.
So simply mount you partition as filesystem type vfat.

Indeed. If anyone has a deskjet other than one of these:
1000C, 1200C, 1600C, 1600Cm, 400, 420C, 500, 550C, 600, 660Cse, 670C,

well it does or doesn't work.

> Grant, can we safely assume that all HP PCL3 printers are perfectly
> compatible?

Well, almost. The thing about PCL is that no two printers speak
exactly the same PCL; rather, most PCL printers of a given type
(300dpi inkjet, 600dpi laser, whatever) tend to speak a common subset
plus a printer-specific enhancement or two. The proper analogy for
these differences in human language would be an accent, I suppose. At
worst, it's the difference between Australian and American "English".

Ghostscript includes a number of PCL drivers; furthermore there is the
third-party "official PCL whitepaper"-based "hpdj" driver that speaks
as official a PCL level 3 as anything can.

This upshot of all this is that for a given printer that implements a
version of PCL level 3, one or more of the Ghostscript drivers should
work, and if not the changes required to make one work will be
trivial. I, personally, would accept this any buy one, but then I'd
also be comfortable working with the driver author for a few weeks to
debug the thing, if it came to that.

All this, of course, isn't as good as one person saying "I've got one,
and it works". Hopefully someone will pipe up and tell us ;)

I had a similar problem. I turned out
to be a gpm (console mouse driver) problem caused
by moving the mouse while exiting X. One way to
solve it is to not move the mouse while
gpm "takes over" from X, another is to restart
gpm after X exit, and third is to run
mc with mouse disabled switch "-d".

if you can live with an intel board (chipset) you should be fine.

The point of the 36-bit extensions to the page table entries is
to allow larger _physical_ address spaces.

Nobody is proposing that we allow a single process to access more
than 3GB of virtual address space. It is certainly feasible for
there to be 10 processes each using 3GB of virtual (and physical)
space thus utilizing 30 GB of physical ram. No changes to the
user-mode code is necessary at all.

Using the space above 1GB for kernel data structures becomes a
bit more problematic, however, due to the fact that linux direct
maps physical memory to the kernel virtual address space. However,
all the changes to support this would be in the kernel, not in
applications.

I support the tpconfig utility. Sounds like the kernel is loading a driver
for the ps2 device. I get no messages from the kernel about finding an
Auxiliary ps2 device (I'm running kernel 2.0.35). Normally the driver
(gpm, tpconfig etc) are started from init scripts in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d or
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d)
not by the kernel. If the kernel is loading some type of driver then that would
explain why tpconfig is timing out.

You could test this by booting into single user mode and then run tpconfig

(tpconfig -i for example or tpconfig --tapmode=0)

If this doesn't work then the kernel is probably loading something for the ps2 device.

Donna,

MouseSystems makes a fully optical mouse (www.mousesystems.com). I
believe they were the first. I have on and I like the mouse part (the
action, buttons, resolution, etc.), but mine goes crazy when there is a
sound, such as ringing the bell for an error, and the mouse is moving. I
suspect that I got a bad one and that others would be more tame but I
have to notice, they aren't in many stores and they are difficult to

The autoanswer software is usualy part of the telephone switch software and

This worked for me. But it is intimidating. BTW, RH doesn't recommend
the upgrade, unless you actually need some new driver or something. Do you
really <need> it? I only went through it to gain the experience and help
me learn the big 'L'.

Try http://www.dandelion.com/Linux/ for mylex drivers. I've never used
them.

install the new version of XFree86, i am pretty sure it will support your
video card, then dont use a ramdac if you must make sure that you use the
right one. to find the right one run "

# SuperProbe

that should tell you the right one

The 'info' I question is that there is an undocumented user-mode processor
reset instruction in the x86 family from 286 through Pentium-III. I
believe that things like OS/2 1.x quiet resets are done through the
keyboard controller, fast reset, or multiple faults. All of which are
preventable by a protected mode OS if it so chooses. Basically I believe
an OS can prevent a quiet reset if it wants to, OS/2 and Win9x may choose
not to do so for compatibility reasons.

I don't question the exisitence of undocumented instruction like loadall
that come and go.
