NO, Windows everywhere is the way they see they will make the most
cash. Their committed to their shareholders, employees and customers.
That seems to best translate to Windows unless you have a better idea.

FWIW, I installed RH 5.2 w/ the stock 2.0.36 kernel on a machine w/ 256 Mb of
RAM, and didn't do a thing to get it all recognized, but the Linux problem is
that it is just reporting what it finds in the bios, and if your motherboard
bios doesn't handle memory above 64 Mb too well, then it can't correctly report
it, and you may have trouble accessing or using it anyway, no matter what OS you
run on it.
It is merely asking for trouble to mix memory of different types, (or even of
different manufacturers) on the same system, due to fluctuations in timings
between the lots, and lack of enforced rigid quality control standards. In
Dos/windows anything, this isn't much of an issue, as Dos can't even see memory
above 1 Mb without help, and windows9x is just another in the series of patches
to hide this, but in a true 32-bit OS, with a flat memory model, the OS will see
all the memory that the BIOS will report and at start-up, so if your hardware is
the least bit flakey, then you will likely find out right away.
(my system is Supermicro P6DOF w/ 450 GX chipset, AMI bios, and Dual 180 Mhz
PPro's w/ 256 Kb cache, overclocked to 200 Mhz, and 256 Mb of FP RAM w/parity)
Make sure your bios is as up to date too as possible, as that could be a
factor...

halt -p didn't work from the command line for me.
I had to edit my halt script in init.d to read:
*halt)
message="The system is halted"
command="halt -p"
Added the -p on the command line. This is on Redhat 5.2
system, YMMV on other distros.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had ran into this problem and found a
solution. I have a perfectly good running system based on Red Hat 5.2
with SMP, 2.0.36 kernel; recently upgraded to 2.2.2 kernel.
I have an HP LaserJet 5L printer connected to /dev/lp0 and I am using
the LaserJet 4/5/6 printer filter. Everthing works fine, I can print
with lpr and stuff. However when I tries to print with enscript, the
printer doesn't eject the page. I can see that data are being sent to
the printer because the light is flashing but no matter how many pages I
print, I don't get any output. After print job is complete, I press the
form feed button and all I get is one page, the first page.
Has anyone else ran into this probem?
Thanks,
Cheng

Do you need a Postscript printer? Linux can use Ghostscript to
print Postscript on all manner of non-Postscript devices.
The Printing HOWTO's companion compatibility listing lists a great
many printers which work perfectly with Linux; by definition this
includes the ability to print Postscript somehow, since that's how
most Unix software prints.
See http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi

No. Most any laser printer will accept plain ascii and print it. You
may need an lf->crlf filter, though; such a filter is easily made.
Consult the Printing HOWTO.

I am trying to get linux to run with my cable modem.
I have already disabled PNP.
I was getting the message
"delaying eth0 initialization"
then I implemented the changes suggested by Tim Stark
i.e changed my /etc/conf.modules to read
alias eth0 3c509
options eth0 io=0x300 irq5
and then type
insmod 3c509
then run netcfg and activate eth0.
Now I get Mar 10 22:55:50 localhost kernel: IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995

NET3.035 Mar 10 22:55:52 localhost insmod:

when I boot up.
if I run ifconfig I get the following

can any one tell me what I still need to change to get this working??
I beleive the 3c509 driver that I am running is Donald Beckers v.1.16 which as
far as I can tell is the most up to date version.

The tape uses the devices /dev/qft?, /dev/nqft? and /dev/rawft?
(? = a number from 0 to 3).
You can create them with the script MAKEDEV.ftape (somewhere in the
ftape directory).
I would advise you to install the ftape-tools, and read the ftape
documentation. (Both available on sunsite or its mirrors, in the
directory /pub/Linux/kernel/tapes).

I got some mails wondering if this is necessary.
Ok, a new version is not necessary, but the modutils 2.1.121 is
located in the 2.1.x kernel tree, where the hacker versions are.
I think renaming the package to 2.2.0 and putting it to the
v2.2 kernel tree would be very good, since a lot of people ask
for the necessary modutils version for 2.2.x kernel series.

I use an ASUS P2B-DS with two 400MHz PII. The box runs the apache
server, Oracle, StarOffice, Netscape and works as a IP Masquerading
Server. I started with kernel 2.0.36 and upgraded to 2.2.1, 2.2.2 and
2.2.3 without having any problems.
The speedup for a kernel compile is about 1.8 using 2CPUs vs. 1CPU. This
speedup is true while x11amp, xosview, apache and oracle are running.
Not too bad.

except I can't list out any files in the cdrom after I changed to another

After mounting it, I can list out the files in the cdrom. Then, if i
inserted another cdrom, I can't see the files in there. It just shows a bunch

Where is it giving you the error? WHat error do you get?
I found that using "make bzImage" instead of "zImage" fixed my compile problems
with 2.0.36, and this is so far, largly undocumented. The error I was getting
was "kernel too big"- as I was trying to compile an SMP version.

Very droll. The simple fact is that my challenge cannot be answered so

Because this thread is being cross posted to UK.comp.os.linux which,

Perhaps if you start cross posting the thread to an indian.

Howdy,
I recently tried Redhat Linux 5.0. It was an overall good experience,BUT i
couldnt get my NIC to work. I was told because that it is in PnP mode, and
since the PnP setting are controlled by my BIOS,,, this NIC didnt like that..
so it didnt work... the Card works *perfect* with NT now, but not with Linux.
I was wondering if the *New* Linux Kernel will support this card?
Thanks in advance,
