Maybe because the kernel was compiled for another system, not for a laptop
which has a very different architecture from a normal Personal computer. Try
building a new kernel for the laptop then make the floppy!!!

hmm. i am using a pair of symbios 8715sp (sym53c875) pci scsi cards
in one of my boxen. irq sharing is not a problem. they're both using
irq 15. the kernel seems to find both of them without problems. i
have the driver built-in to the kernel. i do not pass any options to
the scsi system either.
you might try asking on the linux-scsi or linux-kernel mailling lists.

Actually, there's more to my story. I bought one single NIC late last
year; that one was fun. It came with source. So did the kernel. And there
was yet a third version on the scyld site. I looked them over to see what
might be the newest, and they all looked like three parallel branches off
the source tree; each had some new-looking stuff the others didn't have.
So I went with the kernel driver and it worked dandy.
Then I bought the switched-network-in-a-box, which came with two 4.1
cards, and one diskette that (as I mentioned) had no source

Tom did not test the FIC AZ-11
(url http://www.fica.com/products/motherboard/Socket462/AZ11.stm).
I just built a duron system (600 MHz) based on this motherboard. I'm
quite happy with it. I have booted three different linux kernels (two
different installers and tomsrtbt) and I have succesfully installed
debian 2.1 on it. So far so good, but I've only had it up for three
days. I'm waiting for a debian 2.2 CD set it and plan to install that
when it arrives.

Subject: CD-RW help!
Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 23:30:04 -0000
okay, my IDE CD-RW is acting up. I have an HP 9100 IDE/ATAPI. For some
reason, Linux refuses to recognize it. Every so often I would be able to
use it, but once I rebooted I couldn't anymore. I have reinstalled
Mandrake about 15 times and even installed it from the CD-RW. My DVD
works just fine. As a last resort, I tried removing
Mandrake's "Supermount Technology" and opted to mount removable drives
myself. My DVD mounted OK, my zip the same, but when I went to mount my
CD-RW, it said "mount: The kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a
block device (maybe 'insmod driver'?)". I also logged on as root and
typed cdrecord -scanbus. This was the error message I received "No such
file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver." Another observation I
made: whenver the CD-RW was working (the rare occasions) I would go into
the HardDrake configuration utility and listed under the category CD-ROM
Drives would be the following:
Toshiba SD-M1212 DVD
HP CD-Writer Plus 9100
Unknown (When I clicked on this it was identified as a SCSI device.
Perhaps it was a driver used for SCSI emulation???)
Anyway, whenever the CD-RW didn't work, I would go into the HardDrake
again and see the following:
Toshiba SD-M1212 DVD
HP CD-Writer Plus 9100
The unknown SCSI device disappeared. Am I correct in my assumption that
the unknown device was a SCSI emulator? Is this why my CD-Writer isn't
working? If it is a SCSI driver, how do I reinstall it? Thanks for
helping me on this mind-boggling problem!

Subject: After Install X-windows comes up I run Xterm, X-windows quits
Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 00:04:29 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to get X-Windows setup with an unknown
type of Cirrus Logic "SIIG" ISA graphics card. I only seem to get
some response when I set it up with Xconfigurator in 8-bit mode.
I am using Redhat 6.1 and KDE. The KDE desktop comes up
after a while. When I click on the Xterm icon, there is a delay,
the Xterm window comes up and just as it comes up, X-Windows
drops back to the Linux shell. There is a message:
QImage::color:Index out of range.
What does this mean and how can I correct the problem.
Is there any way that I can find out exactly what model
of card that I have. There is a model number, but it does
not look like anything related to what is in the Xconfigurator
list nor on the SIIG site. The model is MVGA-AVGA3.
I have a dual boot system and the card works with the Linux
shell and Win95C with a resolution of 1024x768 and 16 bit
hicolor.
Thanks

I have an 'stty' program, but no such devices. What does setserial -ag
show for the device? It should be something like this:
# setserial -ag /dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 3000, closing_wait2: infinte
Flags: spd_normal skip_test
If you connect minicom to /dev/ttyS1 (or your /dev/stty01?) do you get a
response to AT codes? The output of AT&V might be useful to see if it has
any strange defaults.

I seem to have the opposite problem of many users. Kudzu saw my ethernet
card and Advansys SCSI card and set them both up. The SCSI works correctly.
I don't yet know about the ethernet card, I'm going to try that out
tonight.
My problem, however, is that since kudzu set up the ethernet card (which
I'm going to use to connect an ethernet-based printer), I can dial up my
ISP on my modem but can no longer see the Internet through it.
How do I fix this?
Thanks,
