One person at Cygnus just recently signed on with cable modems. She reports it
is great until 5pm, when the bandwidth goes to hell (right now, she is editing
files cross country, so she sees how long it takes to echo each character).

Hi,

I've just bought a new actiontec PCMCIA fast ethernet card and I've
tried to use it in a RedHat 5.2 system on a Mitac laptop, both with
kernel 2.0.36 and 2.2.3. It isn't recognized so it doesn't work.

Is there anyone who knows how to make it working?
The exact model is : Actiontec FastNet pro 100 (mod num. ne20000-01)

Thank you
Glauco.

These are all in Knoxville, TN, 37922-3449. Perhaps I can clear out
my personal collection(need space<grin>) and help someone out in the
process.

Buy some older box, but can't find a monitor for it? Perhaps I can
help on that one.

Here are most of the models:

        Digital VR-320
        Digital VR-319
        Digital VR-290
        Digital VR-262
        Sun RGBHV monitors(5-BNC) by Hitachi
Sun 9-pin TTL monitors by Hitachi

There are about 20 of them alltogether. Hopefully someone could use
some of them.

Just send a list of what you need along with an offer.

ok. i got 'em working. as i have said both cards were trying to use the same

different settings for a 3c509b card.

These are in Knoxville, TN, 37922-3449. They require LAT, so you
might need a special server for your host if you aren't running one of
Digital's OS's(ie. VMS, Ultrix, OSF/1, Digital UNIX, etc.).

  Pictures are available upon request.

        5 Digital DECServer 200/DL
8 Serial ports via breakout box
            AUI Ethernet port
Status lights to show system status
            System software included

These do not support Modem Control(sorry<grin>). The DL stands for
Data Line, thus, you would use terminals with them(which I can supply
you, if you wish). They run up to 19.2Kbps(which is a nice speed for a
terminal, in my honest opinion).

I would like to get $40 US for each. Hopefully someone out there can
put them to good use.

             LK401 keyboard
             Mouse
             19" Monitor(VR319)

  Software is included with each.

They run over TCP/IP or DECNet, and make lovely X-terminals.

Each is a pizza-box style system, and has onboard ethernet, status
lights, serial and parallel ports.

  Pictures are available on request.

P.S. - I would like to get $150 for #2 and 3, and

Try the latest BIOS download, which may provide better hardware
compatibility.
Also make sure you have the latest bios and drivers for the other parts of
your system... it doesnt' take much to make a system reliably unstable.

It cetainly can be done. I have Win95 and RH 5.2 on my Tecra 8K. You will
need the latest version of pcmcia-cs from David Hinds (3.0.9 last time I
looked). The pcmcia stuff is still a bit flakey (at least for my 3Com
ethernet card), but it does work. Forget the built in modem, though. It's
a cheesey Winmodem and will not work in Linux. I'm still wrestling with
the sound card; I'm sure that I can figure it out as soon as I can find
some time.

It's a decent Linux box. KDE runs wonderfully on the NeoMagic 1024x768
screen and the machine is generally fast and responsive. Let me know if
I can help with some of the details.....................Ian

Hi.

Having a nightmare setting up a printer under redhat 5.1, kernel 2.2.2.
It's a HP Laserjet 1100
I've compiled parport into the kernel, and printer support is all
enabled.
printcap and filter is also setup correctly, (done with the redhat
printer config tool)

The symptom is, no matter what/how i try to print, all i get is blank
paper.
i've tried the popular fix for 2.2 kernels, and setup the parallel port
to use irq from 7 lilo.

It's driving me nuts. It works perfectly, except the pages are blank!

Any ideas/tips/thoughs welcome, here, or by email.
Erm.. just to add.. it works fine in Win, so the printer isn't fubar or
anything..

I had this feature working quite nicely in RedHat 5.1 kernel 2.0.36. I have
upgraded to RedHat 5.2 and kernel 2.2.2 and I cannot get it to work again. Did this
feature get broken in kernel 2.2.2?

i definatelly think that it's more that redhat tends to attract the newbie
crowd. all of the slackware users i know are hardcore old school, get the
tarball and do it yourself, gimme a shell and the admin tools be damned

Subject: ISA NIC for Linux - Help me find one that works!
Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 23:48:43 -0500

Hi,
I've been trying to get an ISA NIC card working with Linux on my 486 (ISA).
Problem is that I can't even find anyone selling most of the ISA ones listed
as supported in the ethernet HOWTO.

I tried a 3c905b, but couldnt get it working because my windoze 98 disliked
it so much that it refused to even run the program disable the PNP.

So the question is: can you please suggest a specific ISA NIC card that has
a very high probability of actually working, i.e supported, and no pitfalls
like plug-and-pray, etc. And most important, a specific mail order merchant
that IS SELLING THE CARD. I'll even go with 10Mbs if that is all i can
find.

Thanks alot in advance,
Robert Schnitzer

please post and also mail me at:

Can anybody recommend an inexpensive IDE CDR
drive that works with linux? I checked out the CD-Writing
mini-howto but it's a year old and I suspect (hope) its
list of compatible drives is not complete.

No matter, I don't think you'll find any K6-III's that will support SMP
either...
AMD gave up on that for the K6, but hopefully will resurect it for the K-7?

What is your modem model?
Is it an ISA model or UGH! a PCI one? If PCI, then get a new one?
Does it identify a UART? If the UART is "unknown" then you probably have a
win-modem or act-alike. you can check here for some ideas:

Actually, what you really want to check is the cdrecord manual for the
list of drives known to work.

Btw, you may be interested in the bookmarks I have collected in the
past two weeks that I've had a CDR.
