i am new to the hardware thing and i though troubleshooting this

Linux forever!

I have been trying to install or make Linux Mandrake 7.0 detect my PCMCIA
card on my laptop (Toshiba 220CDS) without any success. The PCMCIA card is
Etherlink III 10BaseT Model 3C589D from 3COM. Lothar cannot detect it in
its Networking Device. So I cannot access the internet right now with my
Laptop.

I have been wondering if someone can help me on this matter.

Thank you.

Subject: Multiple SCSI HDDs not accessible by OS
Date: Fri, 07 Apr 2000 15:07:00 GMT

I have a RedHat 5.2 system that has 2 SCSI
controllers. The DPT RAID controller in the
system sees an internal drive array as /dev/sda.
I have an Adaptec 2944 card connected to an EMC
Symmetrix disk array. When I boot the system, the
BIOS of the Adaptec recognizes all 6 drives
configured on the EMC box. When I do the "insmod
aic7xxx", the driver recognizes all 6 drives.
However, only /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc are available
to the OS. When I do an "fdisk /dev/sdd", I get
something like "Unable to open /dev/sdd". The
device files are there with the correct
major/minor numbers, etc. Is there a limit to the
number of SCSI HDDs allowed? That doesn't seem
likely.

Thanks,

Kevin

Have anyone successfully run X4.0 in 24 bits using a Voodoo 3? Here
weird things happen. I need 24 bits for some applications, even if there's no

I have a 50x Acer, and the patch I think you may be referring to
appeared about 2.2.15pre5. At least that is where I got going. 2.2.14
would generate the same type errors as above for me. FYI ...

Same scenario with me, installation was fine, but not usable afterwards.
I also found oddly that if I booted runlevel 3 (no X), it generally
worked fine for some reason. startx would kill it though. Try
2.2.15preWhatEverItIsAtNow.

I've since cleared up the error, though I really don't know how! It just

Samba print services. Now, I am going to look into alternative to lpr.
I'll check out CUPS. Does it have any special features?

Thanks!

hi,
the beep comes from the BIOS POST =power on self test

in a early stage, before it even recognizes the BIOS extension
on your graphics card - so it can't send written error messages-
it send beepcodes.

find the manufacturer and version of your BIOS . on theire
Web sites you'll find which beepsequence means what.
( search for 'postcodes')
for some elder AMI and Award BIOSses i think i'll can
mail you but better search the web.

some example(AMI):

1 beep Refresh failure
2 beeps Parity error
3 beeps Base 64K memory failure
4 beeps Timer not operational
5 beeps Processor error
6 beeps 8042 - gate A20 failure
7 beeps Processor exception interrupt error
8 beeps Display memory read/write failure
9 beeps ROM checksum error
10 beeps CMOS shutdown register read/write error
11 beeps Cache memory bad

hi,

i recompiled my kernel using the latest devel version
(2.3.99pre3) and managed to get the parport drivers to load, they even see
my printer and correctly read the firmware. However, _lpr <filename>_
still does nothing. I expect that i should at least get garbage, even if
the printcap is incorrectly configured.

I have also tried to print using pdq and have just downloaded and
installed CUPS (as soon as i figure out how to use it...). Any ideas on a
remedy?

I recently downloaded the XF86 4.0 binaries for my system, and have got the
i810 driver up and running. There are a couple of problems though.
Firstly, the agpgart module is compiled and works fine, but despite the fact
that my kernel supports auto loading, it doesn't auto load when I run
startx. I have to modprobe it to get it loaded. Secondly, the X server
actually seems a bit buggy, with icons and bars, etc, leaving trails behind
when I move them. Is this a known problem?? I couldn't find any reference
to it in the docs.

Any help would be appreciated,

thanks in advance,

Gareth

PS I've got Mandrake 7.0, PIII 500, 128 Megs(which Linux only seems to
think is 64???), i810 chipset.

First configure your first computer, which the printer is connected to, to
accept print jobs from you second computer.

Then do a network printer config. Remote print queue should be the same as
the print queue name in the printer host.

yup, sure does. for the stick of 128meg, that is.

with 256meg, the initial boot message did show that it senses 256, but
there was a nasty kernel dump very early on in the boot process. I
didn't bother to figure it out - I was at that shop for a while trying
things and didn't want to stay too much longer. and 256meg would have
exceeded the cost of the basic unit by many times ;-)

Format the drive with RH6.0. Power down at that point and then install

I have noticed similar problems with the newer installs not working

I'm having loads of problems configuring my modem. First some
details:-

RH 6.0
Dell XPS400
ppp 2.3.7
Hayes Accura external ISDN modem on com1 (defintely not a WinModem)

I've had the modem working under RH5.1, but since I've reinstalled
RH6.0 I can't get it to work. I've since lost the original 5.1 install
disks so it's not as if I go back to that setup either. I've tried the
following methods:-

kppp
----
Gives the following - "Looking for modem .... Sorry modem is busy"

minicom
=======
Gives the following error - "You're already online - hang up first",
even though I'm not.

Using pppd + chat
=================
Give "Connect script failed", and has the following in
/var/log/messages:-

Apr 7 18:10:35 localhost kernel: registered device ppp0
Apr 7 18:10:35 localhost pppd[870]: pppd 2.3.7 started by root, uid 0
Apr 7 18:10:36 localhost chat[872]: Can't get terminal parameters:
Input/output error
Apr 7 18:10:36 localhost pppd[870]: Connect script failed
Apr 7 18:10:37 localhost pppd[870]: Exit.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? As far as I can make
out, it's defintely a comms problem between the PC & the modem as it
doesn't even get as far as dialing out. I've tried various
combinations of /dev/cua0, /dev/ttyS0 & /dev/modem without any luck,
as well as mucked around with setserial but as far as I can make out
the com port seems ok. Just to eliminate it the setserial output is:-

/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4

All help appreciated.

Andy

This sounds like an error connected to YP, yellow pages also known as
NIS. Are you running NIS?

What is the output if you type:

ypwhich

It is hard to support something in software when the computer is powered

You could telnet into any Linux box and tell it to reboot or shutdown.
However, only some motherboards support to also turn the power of at

Hi folks!

Yes, I know, the subject is rather well known, but in my case it
shouldn't have to do with something from /boot/* not being found or the
like.

I have LILO installed on /dev/hda (its /boot living in /dev/hda1) to
start up Linux on /dev/sda5. Everything works fine until I add a new,
empty IDE-drive (20GB) on /dev/hdc. In that case it hangs when trying to
execute the secondary loader. Booting from floppy works in both cases,
though.

Any ideas? Does LILO get confused by large disks Secondary/Master-Disks?

When installing 6.1, make sure that you are using the updated install floppy
image, not booting the CD or using the original boot floppy. IIRC, the
problems with 6.1 and the 2940 are documented. I successfully installed
using this method on a new Dell Precision 610 about a month ago, so
I can confirm that it works.

Also, try installing without checking for bad blocks. It goes much
quicker.
