According to listening tests at
http://www.pcavtech.com/soundcards/summary/index.htm the SB Live has
only mediocre fidelity. Certainly not the best.

i don't understand. SuSE installs the Apsfilter package by default so
if you wanted to print postscript, you'd do 'lpr -Plp, plain ascii
with 'lpr -Praw' and pretty-printed ascii as 'lpr-Pascii'. You can
set the default printer with $PRINTER.

the G200 is a damn good card for 2s, BUT the v3 does much higher

There are several distros that fit on a single floppy so, there are
mini-versions, but they don't do much other than boot a kernel and
provide you a ramdisk filesystem. You might have to tinker quite a bit
get it to actually do something usefull.
There is Trinux http://www.trinux.org , and 2 or 3 others who's name I
can't remember, check linux.org's distro list, they link to several
mini-linuxes.

Subject: RH6.0: mouse problem in text mode
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 22:43:55 +0200
I am running RH6.0 and have a normal serial logitech mouse (3 buttons)
on /dev/ttyS0 configured by mouseconfig as "Microsoft" type. (I guess it
is an alias for "ms").
In X mode my mouse works perfectly.
In text mode with the gpm daemon running, I see the mouse moving as I
want and the copy & paste feature works too.
The problem is when I run Midnight Commander. The buttons don't work (I
cannot pull down the menus, moving through the directories and so on).
Something much strange happen when using Lynx. The left button doesn't
work and pressing the middle one, lynx seems to enter in a loop moving
everywhere, changing url, saving configurations (???).
Running the mev utility I can see the mouse events are trapped correctly
(each button is identified, press and release events too, movements too
and so on).
Before using RH6.0 I have used for a few days a Debian distribution and
in that case the mouse was working correctly both in text and X modes.
Another thing I don't understand:
Running linuxconf (both in text mode or within KDE and with my mouse
moving on the screen), and quitting without making any change, it says
the status is not in sync with the current configuration and when I ask
to see what is to be updated it says that '/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S85gpm start'
is to be executed.
Is out there someone with a suggestion ?

Subject: HDD very slow ?
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 21:39:03 +0200
Hi
I've made a simple test to see if my Linux I've just installed is well
configured : copy of a big directory from one drive to another.
I compared the results with W98 and I found that my Linux takes twice W98's
time to perform the operation (1,7 Go : 10 mn with W98 & 21 mn with Linux).
I thought that this could be :
- W98 CopyFile uses asynchronous IO or is threaded ;
- the 2 disks are on different IDE controller.
So I remade the test on a single disk (=> Serialization of HDD commands on a
single IDE controler), but Linux is still very slow. So I looked at hdparm
(version
3.3) and found that :
1. 32 bits IO support is disabled by default, but 32 bits doesn't sole the
pb (hdparm -c1) ;
2. DMA is active (chosen by kernel configuration, verified with hdparm) ;
3. X34 hangs my computer => no UDMA.
I think the problem is there, but I didn't managed to activate UDMA. My
chipset is an Intel LX, and I have 2 HDD UDMA (1 WD 4Go, 1 IBM 8Go).
Linux Kernel 2.2.10, distro SuSE.
Does anybody have an idea / similar pb ?
Thanks

Are you sure your serial mouse can be used with the adapter? Not all
of them will work that way.
You have of course checked that /dev/mouse points to /dev/psaux.

I think it was sone virus only in the mbr=B4s.
I simply wrote some clean MBR=B4s. (using dos=B4s fdisk /MBR because that=
was a windows system). I think writing of new MBR=B4s does not destroy
anything but you will need an alternative boot method for LILO when you
destroy the boot drive MBR. =
You will need to boot a clean system.
In my distribution (suse) I can boot a rescue-system from cdrom.
Then I should be able to write a clean new MBR. Or use the dos method.
Don=B4t know if you can destroy any data. Use on your own risk.
This won=B4t help if you have no virus. =
To find out if you have a virus on MBR or what you=B4ll need a virus
detection utility but I have no idea if some exist for linux.
=
so I hope this will give you some ideas.

Yes, the Promise Ultra66 works IF you have the right kernel.
I am using the Mandrake 6.0 distribution (kernel 2.2.9 + patches), the
Promise card, and a pair of WD 18 GB Expert drives (one of which seems to be
having problems :>( ). You won't be able to mount the drives at bootup or
during installation, so I would suggest having a plain-old IDE drive on your
main bus (seems to work best on ide1, making it /dev/hda). But once you
have a decent installation it seems to work fine. I'm not sure if it will
get the full performance, but you are more likely to be limited by your
drive hardware than the bus; processor performance also matters. Using a
P5-166, I get about 13.8 MB/sec (using hdparm -t); using a p5-120 I get
about 12.3 MB/sec.
Incidently, the Promise Ultra33 is supported natively in kernels 2.0.36+ (or
so I understand), so you *might* be able to get a mountable drive at
installation using this instead of the Ultra66. I have not tried this
personally so be advised; YMMV.
Good luck!

You're trying to recompile the kernel? That shouldn't be
necessary. Redhat includes precompiled drivers for most
common network hardware. At any rate, it's clear that
something went wrong in your installation, if you didn't
have 'make' when you finished. Assuming this is a new

I'm working on setting up the same thing myself. Here's what I'm
setting up:
One computer connects through one ethernet connection to the ADSL
router. It has a second ethernet card which connects to the other two
computers in a local LAN. Like this:
+-------------+ +-----------+ +--------------+
Telco line ---| ADSL router |----| Linux PC |----| Ethernet HUB |
+-------------+ +-----------+ +--------------+
| |
+----+ +----+
| PC | | PC |
+----+ +----+
You'll need to set up the Linux PC between the ADSL router and ethernet
hub as a masquerading server. The IP Masquerading Mini How-To will get
you started.
Some other how-to's to look at:
DNS howto - set your machine up as a caching only DNS server to save
some lookup time when surfing. Not a bad idea but not necessary.
Ethernet howto - talks about multiple ethernet cards in one system.
Firewalling and proxy server howto - protect your computers from
unscrupulous invaders.
IPCHAINS howto - more on firewalling
Masquerading Proxy Server howto - more masquerading info
ADSL mini howto - Advice on connecting through ADSL.
That ought to be enough to get you started.

Have a look at isapnpfaq under /usr/doc/isapnptools. I got my sound
card to work using pnpdump and configuring by hand for the parameters
I found in Windows.
Sndconfig didn't work. I have to remove the "(check)" from isapnp.conf
and the mpu_irq=9 from modules.conf (this is a default anyway with
sb.o) because the card reported "device or resource busy". Sndconfig
also parsed the dma in the wrong order.
Have a look at the end of /var/log/messages (boot messages) to see
where the problem starts.

I use a Greystone peripherals CardDock in my desktop system at work and it
works fine. It is a two slot device that hooks up via an ISA card. The
PCMCIA slot assembly goes in a 5 1/4" drive bay. Generally, if you go with
the PCMCIA 2.0 standard they all use the same Intel compatible command set.
The PCMCIA stuff in Linux is very robust and supports most of the major PCMCIA
chip sets out there. I'm not sure how well Carbus works, it's in the Linux
PCMCIA distribution, but there are not a lot of Cardbus compatible cards at
the moment.

Hello
I want to use my floppy tape Iomega Ditto Max Pro with Linux 2.2.5. I
tried to compile the ftape 4.02, but there is a bug (Error during
compiling, that a strucutre had no memeber "timeout" in fdc-io.c")
Anyone an idea? Thanks
Robert

Hi there,
I've got the scanner AGFA SnapScan 1236S on the distributed Adaptec
SCSI-Controller AVA-1505. Is this adapter supported by linux 2.2 ?
Is there any experience using this scanner and SANE ?
