I can't get redhat to recognize my ethernet card. I have a Intel
EtherExpress Pro/10 ISA card which is listed as a Tier 2 supported card
on redhats page. I tried installing rh 5.1 from cd rom and the 5.2 ftp
disk images, both install programs won't detect my card on autoprobe or
when i specify settings. Although I don't know the exact format for the
settings. I've tried using both
io=0x230, irq=3
and
ether=3,0x230,eth0
and neither worked.
Any suggestions?
thanx,
-Mike

I'm having problems using my Mustek flatbed 1200SP scanner. It seems
that my Red Hat 5.2 box recognizes it as a scanner but I can't seem to
get the damn thing to work.
I have installed sane through Red Hat Utilities but when I type in
xscanimage, I get: error in loading sgared libraries libsane.so.0:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
I'm not sure what all of this means and of course I'm some what of a
newbie.
Can anyone help?
thanks steverl

In the past Iiyama had a good rep, though cheaper than the competition in the
UNIX world. Dunno about now.

> Viewsonic G790

You might want to look at the Viewsonic PS790, which is the 'professional' 19"
monitor produced by ViewSonic for the CAD/CAM market. It has many of the same
specs as the G790, but it has a .25 dot pitch instead of .26, though the
bandwidth seems lower (158 vs. 200).

> Optiquest V95
I don't know anything about his.

You might also look at the Nokia 446Xpro. Before I went to a 21" Nokia, I had
a 17" ViewSonic, and then went to a 17" Nokia. It was amazing the difference
in clarity between the two (and the clarity between the Mag I'm currently using
on my home machine and the ViewSonic was also amazing with the ViewSonic coming
in better, but less than the Nokia -- in monitors, you tend to get what you pay
for). Of course at the time, the Nokia was going for 1000, and the ViewSonic
about 700 (IIRC, in terms of 19" monitors, the Nokia is about $100 more than
the ViewSonic).

The best approach is to go to a store that has the monitor and lets you up the
resolution to what you want. Then buy it from them rather than mail order.

A BNC cable can produce a slightly better screen (on the other hand, buying a
$50 premium shielded vga cable can also do the same).

Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 15:08:17 +1100

TWIMC,
I've been struggling to get Red-Hat 5.2 smoothly running on my new PII system.

I have 2 hard drives:

                              ---------- Partition --------------
ID Drive Size Size Type Mount Point
0 IBM UltraStar 4.5GB 128MB Linux Swap
1 IBM UltraStar 9.1GB 30MB Linux Native /boot
                             1500MB Linux Native /
                             7500MB Linux Native /home

The install works OK, it boots off a floppy OK, but lilo gets lost when
attempting to boot the system from the SCSI drives.

Specfically, it gives the messages:

"Not found any [active partition] on hdd"
"Not found any [active partition] on hdd"

before the BOOT DISK FAILURE message arrives from the BIOS. I guess lilo
is giving me one message for each device in the chain. The SCSI BIOS has
large drive support enabled, and I installed lilo with the "Linear
Addressing" option enabled. I was going to use the /boot partition for
the kernel image location on my next attempt, but right now the kernel is
on /.

What am I doing wrong?

Craig.

I am shopping for an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) for use with my
Linux system. I have never bought a UPS before, so I have little knowledge
of them in general, and none of which vendors have Linux drivers for their
products. Mind if I ask a few questions?

1. What UPS (vendor and/or model) do you recommend?

2. Are all UPS<-->OS communications done via the serial port? Are there
UPSs that support communications via the parallel or USB ports.

3. For those vendors that supply Linux drivers (the only ones I'm
interested in), do they also provide the source code for those drivers?

Thank you.

Make sure that your Xserver is XFree86 3.3.2 or above, and modify your
"XF86Config" file at /etc or /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 directory with the
following statements

####################################################################
Section "Monitor"

    Identifier "MAG DJ707"
    VendorName "MAG"
    ModelName "DJ707"
    HorizSync 30-64 # multisync
    VertRefresh 50-100
    ModeLine "1024x768" 75 1024 1064 1184 1328 768 768 770 800 -hsync -vsync

EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "ATI 3D Rage Pro"
    VendorName "Chaintech"
    BoardName "6BSV/6ASV"
# VideoRam 4096
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Driver "accel"
    Device "ATI 3D Rage Pro"
    Monitor "MAG DJ707"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

######################################################################

In this way, the resolution can be raised to 1024x768 with 32768 colors.
It works properly for my system, and you may need to adjust the setting
for "Modeline" to fit your monitor.

Hi andy,

There is an ext2fs Driver for NT 4.0 at http://www.cyco.nl/~andreys - it is
beta and read-only. Have had no trouble with it so far, and it looks like it
reads well enough to backup your Linux system using your NT side. Make SURE
you download the Sync utility from www.sysinternals.com as the documentation
recommends.

For doing the opposite, there is also a read-only NTFS driver for Linux. Be
careful if you are going to do backups with this one though, since it
doesn't support NTFS compression (compressed files come out garbled).

Hope this helps,

- David Martinez

I tried lpr -l too, but this gives only empty pages or, if I print a a2ps converted
file, a printer hangup. But like before, if I print ps-files not made by a2ps,
everything works fine.

I played a little bit with a2ps and found out, that if I use the option -ni, I get
no hangups any longer, but only white pages. After using the -ns option too, I get
a page with the Header, the date and filename but not with the documenttext itself
on it.

I also installed a 16MB PS/2 module instead the 4MB to check if theres a
memoryproblem like not enough or not working ram.

Does anyone know what happened to this web page? Has it moved

Similarly, does anyone know if current versions of Slackware

Tom, Ray, others:

The SIIG UltraIDE Pro chipset is supported in kernel version 2.2.0-pre1
and probably in the late 2.1.13x's as well. Find it at your nearest
kernel.org mirror.

Or, if you prefer using tried-and-tested kernel versions, a patch is
available for 2.0.36 as well at
<http://www.dyer.vanderbilt.edu/server/udma/>

If you don't know what a kernel version is, ask someone :-)

I would add CTX to the list. I don't know where you are located or if
there is a Fry's Electronics near you, but I was in their store a few
weeks back, looking at monitors. There was a 19" CTX that had better
character definition in the 1400x1280 resolution than the 21" Viewsonic
next to it at the same resolution. The lack characters were blacker
and sharper. I played with the contrast on the Viewsonic and could
not improve it. Sorry I do not recall the model number.

One more log on the fire,

The high price solution is of course, 4mm DAT.

Consider this:
8-10 GB IDE drives can be had for around $200.
100MB Zip drives can be had for around $100.

Use the large hard-drive as your backup device. You can keep many
"dump" or compressed "tar" files on the big disk. Use the Zip
drive for those things which must be archived. If not a Zip then
a Jazz drive. Use the disk for the daily backups. Archive one backup
file per week on the Zip or Jazz.

The only wrong answer to your question is to do nothing.

No good news here, I have the same card. I installed it, and Linux was unable

responds when no driver is availble.
