When you install VMware on whatever platform, you basically generate a
completely new machine. It doesn't use any of the host resources on the
disk. It'll use its own swap areas. I've installed VMware for both windows
and linux on several machines and it doesn't require extra swap areas in
the host's filesystem.

The driver is probably wrong. If you has a HSF-modem it is possible
you could use the driver at www.olitec.com.

1. I had my expert mouse break several years ago - the effect was that
the cursor would only move in a straight line (this was under
NT). kensington (owned, I think, by Acco office products) was
very good about replacing it. Try swapping with a simple cheap
serial mouse - which should work with the same settings. Also
check the kensington on some other system to see if it is
currently ok.
2. I am currently using an expert mouse (v.5) under SuSE 6.4 - in
the /etc/XF86Config file is a section for the pointer device
(mouse) which requires settings for device (/dev/ttyS0 for
serial on COM1) and Protocol ("Microsoft" for microsoft
serial). You probably have the XF86Config file, but I don't
know RH, so there may be other config settings to watch, too.
There are several possible values for Protocol, and if you
get the wrong one, you can have problems like you describe.

Subject: How to configure a NIC in RH6.2??
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 16:19:51 GMT
I just installed RH6.2 after a disk crash that destroyed my previous
RH5.2 installation. This is not the first time I have installed RH6.2
but it was a while ago....
Now I have this problem:
I have 2 NIC:s in the PC and I must now configure the IP addresses of
them. There was no dialogue in the setup sequence where I could do
that so it has to be done manually.
In earlier situations I think I remember I used the command netcfg to
bring up a program screen where I could configure these details.
But on this system when I type netcfg in a command window in KDE
nothing happens, or really a sequence of error messages pop up ending
with 'No such file or directory'
The total message is approximately (has to write it from memory...):
'File /usr/lib/rhs/netcfg/netcfg.py, line 23, in ?
>From Tkinter import *
File /usr/lib/python1.5/lib-tk/Tkinter.py, line 8, in ?
import _tkinter # If this fails your Python may not be configured for
Tk'
What is Python and what is Tk?????
What to do now???
PS: During bootup the two cards are shown as eth0 and eth1
respectively, so they seem to be on teh system...

You might have a problem with number 4, if it's necessary at all.
Dial tones come from the modem's line input I think, not the modem, I
believe. Try the modems "loopback" mode and determine if the cellular
unit detects it. Once the connection is established, the modem will
raise the DSR, and I believe, DCD lines, and your client program on
the Linux machine can detect them. I don't know if there's any widely
available software with that function... kermit or tip should be able
to report the status of the handshaking lines, however.

It was working on my 3 other computers, in WinME, Win98, WinNT 4.0 and
Win2000. I don't use the serial port for it, I use the PS/2 port. I disabled
my serial ports to free up IRQs. Would you know where I can go to find out
about all the mouse settings in X? It seems that maybe that only one axis is
enabled. Thanks for the response

Sounds like an installation or configuration error. Look for
a RPM on the distribution CD called pytk, pythonlib, or similar.
Alternatively, uninstall and re-install netcfg and see what
RPM packages it depends on.

I'm looking to build a similar sytem, but I've already got a lot of
those parts. Anyway, always check pricewatch.com Two rules, don't
buy from anyone that has a different (higher) price when you get to
their web page, and/or doesn't quote shipping charges up front.
http://192.216.185.10/mwave/Index.hmx? I've done a lot of
business with Multiwave. They're good. competive prices, ship on time.
BUT the best deal and who has it varies daily. Try to buy heavy stuff
like case/ps locally.
