i am using slackware v3.5 (w/ kernel 2.0.34). i am using EZ-BIOS
which is the Maxtor variant of EZ-DRIVE. Linux didn't do it w/
kernel 2.0.33, but it did w/ 2.0.34. when you install LILO, have
linux put it on the superblock of the linux partition, and w/ FDISK,
make your linux parition the active one. your computer should read
the first few tracks of the HD and read EZ-DRIVE, then it will boot
to the linux partition.

The Asus TX 97 MB usues a regular socket7. The AMD K6-2 series chips all
require a "Super Socket 7" that is available on the Asus P5 - A/B MBs.

to run xfree86, you need an X server for your Diamond Fire card which I
assume has a PERMEDIA chipset.

download xglint.rpm from: (xglint.rpm is an Xserver gor GLINT, PERMEDIA &
PERMEDIA-2 based cards)
ftp://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/linux/suse/5.3/suse/xsrv3/
install by : rpm -i xglint.rpm

then download installation instructions from: (you may have to ignore some
of the non-applicable instructions)
http://lissy.ug.btl.de/support-db/sdb_e/sndirsch_glint.html

No, but if you could get it to answer "OK" under a DOS comm program, then
it would be okay (real DOS, not a Windows DOS-box session).

Linux and Samba are both GNU products. If you read the GPL which you
could find in a place like /usr/src/linux/COPYING you will find the
following:

-8<---------------------------------------------------------------
                            NO WARRANTY

  11. BECAUSE THE PROGRAM IS LICENSED FREE OF CHARGE, THERE IS NO

YOU. SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU ASSUME THE COST OF ALL
NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR OR CORRECTION.
-8<---------------------------------------------------------------

This means that noone makes any promises that linux or Samba is working
1998, 1999 or year 2000. Because of this you will not find any document
claiming that Linux or Samba is y2k certified. However, people have been
running boxes with the date set to year 2000 to test gnu systems and you
will most likely not step into any y2k related bugs.

There is a good webpage describing gnu and y2k somewhere, I think it was
somewhere att www.gnu.org.

True, but it's much cleaner to use dhcpcd. Since they are using it they
could change your IP address at their whim. And dhcpcd will do the
ifconfig and set up your routes and resolv.conf for you.

Dave, dhcpcd will log information to syslogd. Have you checked your
/var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages files? What do you have in
the /etc/dhcpc directory (files and file contents)? Have you tried
running dhcpcd with '-d'?

As far as support in SuSE, there isn't any. You can try to hack it
into the scripts, like I did, or just throw the command(s) in
/etc/rc.d/boot.local.

We have a very similar requirement to yourself (large long running fortran
codes with huge temp files).

We use the following system and have been very pleased with it.

533 MHz DEC Alpha (Samsung UX motherboard).
2 Mb L3 Cache
128 Mb RAM
9 Gb Ultra2 Seagate Cheetah

We built the system ourselves and it cost about 1500 pounds (UK).

Useful tips:

1) Many have mentioned the speed increase to be had from using DU Fortran
rather than g77. The speed increase seems to be very code dependent. If we
compile our code statically linked on a colleague's DU machine and run it
under Linux we get a speed increase of about 20% over using egcs 1.1.x with
libffm.

2) We are using an Ultra2 Cheetah with the motherboard's UltraWide SCSI
controller. Why? Well, remember that a single drive will not provide data
fast enough to saturate the 40 Mb/s capacity of an UltraWide interface, so
one is limited by the internal data speed of the drive. It is a little
known fact that Seagate's Ultra2 and FibreChannel drives have faster
read/write hardware than their Ultra and UltraWide drives. So running an
Ultra2 drive on the UltraWide bus provides better performance than using an
UltraWide drive on the same interface. I get a sustained read speed of
around 25 Mb/s for the outer tracks and 17 Mb/s for the inner tracks which
ties in nicely with the Seagate data sheets.

3) If you are really concerned about I/O performance get several fast drives
and stripe them using software RAID (I think you need RAID1). Note that
this does not provide any of the fault tollerance of things like RAID5, but
is much faster. With 2 or 3 discs you should get close to filling the SCSI
bandwidth.
