AFAIK, (assuming kernel supports HFS)

mkdir <directory of your choice>
mount -t hfs /dev/fd0 /<directory of your choice>

Hi:

I have an INTEVA Pentium computer with AMD K6/200 processor,
Award Plug and Play BIOS. The board is M5ATA Pentium Super with PCI
and IDE bus. I have IDE hard drives (2.1 and 6.4 G), IDE CDROM,
parallel port ZIP, HP printer.

I tried to install Slackware 3.6 but half way through installing the
ramdisk, the computer reboots. I have tired all the boot disks that
were logocal. I have also tried booting from the CDROm (no luck), I
have tied running the live system and the live from Zip. None work.

>From the Newsgroups mesages, I understand this not my particular
problem (I am not a novice), but that it hapens to many people. I have
not seen it before or its solution.

If it is a problem of the BIOS, can I disable the BIOS? Can I change
it?

If it not a problem of the BIOS, what can I do?

I would apprecite any suggestion. I am working with Linux in a NexGen
90 Mhz without co-processor while the Pentium is runing Windows 95.

Thanks in advance.

I setup redhat 5.1 with one RealTek 8029 pci (ne2kpci). I then tried to add
an other(same kind) but I spent hours on it but gave up and re-installed.
The re-install fixed all my irq problems and I could then configure the
cards.

I am going to be buying a new modem that will be used with Linux RH5.2 and
Win98, what is the most compatible yet most reliable 56k modem to get? Hayes?
Rockwell? USR? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Having been stuck with not one, but TWO winmodems, I am tired of
shopping. (Wish I had figured out they were winmodems before the
return date passed...)

I would like to buy or trade for anyone's modem that _definitely_
works with Linux. Somebody's got to have an extra around...
-- External serial modem is fine,
---internal ISA is OK _if_ it is DEFINITELY NOT A WINMODEM.
-- Please no PCI modems... they are nearly always windows-only
modems.

Please, no 28.8 or slower! I want 33.6Kbps or faster.
Class 2 fax capability would be a plus, but not necessary.

What do I have for trade? A 56 Kbps winmodem!
Your choice of ActionTec ISA or Encore PCI. Both are capable of V.90.
Both are brand new, never used (the box has been opened, and they both
have been put in a computer and powered up, but I took each one out as
soon as I realized it wouldn't work without Windows). Both are still
under warranty.
(I'm keeping one of them to give to my girlfriend... whichever one you
don't want.)

Please email any offers to:

Always choose the modem for ISA because 56k is slow.
I don't think they make any good 100 mbit ISA, even if it is possible.

How much are you willing to spend? ;)

Hayes went bankrupt this year, so they are probably not a good choice as
far as upgrading or warranty.

Rockwell makes widely used chipsets of many different types (but not
complete modems).

USR makes hardware (conventional) modems and Winmodems. You're generally
safe with USR as long as you stay away from the Winmodems and all of their
PCI modems.

If money is no object, consider the external USR V.Everything, which gets
rave reviews over at comp.dcom.modems.

Try www.Transmonde.com

The Vivante SE looks real good...

or www.armcomputer.com

has the Armlet TS759

they both are pretty fine from all reports - I'm in the market for one
myself...

There's also a couple portable newsgroups:

comp.os.laptops
comp.os.linux.portable

But make sure you ask about the modem and say you don't want a
Winmodem.

USR external modems work well. Go with the external fax modem (~120 or
so) or upgrade to the Courier for more industrial quality.

Avoid ALL winmodems - they are not supported by Linux.
