Subject: HP ScanJet Plus hints
Date: Sat, 14 Aug 1999 13:45:58 +0000
I've gotten my HP ScanJet plus (with the original interface card)
working under linux.
1. Use the hpscan.c driver by Christer Weingel:
ftp://rvs.ctrl-c.liu.se/pub/wingel/hpscan/
2. Add the requisite device /dev/hpscan as the suggested char 10,140
3. If you want automatic modules loading:
A. Copy the driver (hpscan.o) to /lib/modules/<version>/misc
B. Add the line to /etc/conf.modules:
alias char-major-10-140 hpscan
4. Update the SANE configuration file
/etc/sane.d/hp.conf adding:
/dev/hpscan
option connect-device
5. To use with xscanimage the proper command is
xscanimage hp
Please add any other hints on the hpscan as responses to this note.

I'm not using the hpt366 on my BP6, so the following are just basic
suggestions you probably already thought of:
Boot with a floppy and confirm that the drive works fine other than
for booting.
Check your BIOS settings. EXT should come first or after only the
floppy in the boot order, and EXT should point to UDMA/66 rather
than SCSI.

The board comes with Win9x drivers for the hpt66 controller, but
using it anywhere else is problematic. Apparently some people
have managed to get it working under NT and Win2k (and a lot of
others haven't), and there is a Linux driver in the works.
Unless you really need more than two IDE controllers, wait. In
a few months the drivers should be stable. It's not like you'll
see any real speed benefit with today's drives anyway.

You forgot the most important memory saving tip. Don't run KDE or GNOME!
They're incredible memory pigs. They'll eat up 32MB before you even start

The easiest way to do this is during installation of Linux. Mandrake even

The GLX module for Mesa tests for MMX and 3Dnow! support when you

Well, I've got the Epson Stylus Color 800.
After hours and many pages of printing colorpics i came to the conclusion
that colorprinting under Linux is something like bullshit. The colorquality
is very bad. Some friends with other colorprinters say the same. If i
compare the printouts with the windowsprints i have the feeling that some
good colorcalibration tools for Linux are missing. The printerdriver
(uniprint / Ghostscript) can make things better but is still far away from
the windowsdriver. So, if you really ask for imagequality print under
Windows.

Hi, I've got that sound card, and with some effort is now working right.
What I did:
1- First of all try running "sndconfig", it detects all right the card though after
rebooting machine there's no sound at all.
2- Recompile kernel with "Pnp support" , choose ALL(just to be sure) "Sound Modules"
and
ALL "Aditional Low Sound Drivers".
3- Let /etc/isapnp.conf empty.
4- Put this into /etc/conf.modules:
alias sound mad16
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb mad16=1
options mad16 io=0x530 irq=7 dma=0 dma16=1 mpu_io=0x330 mpu_irq=5 joystick=0
5- I think it's useless but there should be this in /etc/sysconfig/soundcard:
CARDTYPE=MAD16PRO
And that's all, it should work. It does for me.
If you don't get it to work, there's a solution for 2.0.x kernels at:
http://oto.dyn.ml.org/~drees

Control/Sistema/Dispo
sitivos/Adaptador de Video). Despues ve a http://www.xfree86.org y mira a ver si esta
incluida
entre las tarjetas soportadas.
Para el modem si que de momento no hay solucion, es sin duda uno de los llamados
Winmodem, y no
funcionan con Linux ya que no son verdaderos modems.
Saludos.

I just got an Soundblaster AWE64 GOLD from an auction on ebay. Interestingly
enough, it cost me right at $50 when the S/H was added. This was a "white
box" version! It comes with NOTHING but the card. No software, no
documentation. I am running the 4Front OSS driver software. I got the
"deluxe" version of the software for $20 from 4Front. Total cost was
about $70. You can using Linux's builtin Soundblaster driver if you want to.
The sound with the builtin is OK, but the MIDI is terrible (compared to
the MIDI in the 4Front version). I think it's because the builtin does
the MIDI with the synth instead of the real MIDI hardware. The seller
on ebay was IMS. It took them about a week from the end of the auction
until I received the card.
I guess what I'm saying is that I've found ebay to be a nice place to find
bargins. Of course, as they say, it is "let the buyer beware!". I only
buy when I can use a credit card. I think that is safer. Or at least
you have more recourses than trying to sue the person in small claims court
if they take the money and run or the product is DOA or whatever.
I am NOT associated with ebay. I'm a fairly happy customer.

Subject: Linux and IRQ's
Date: Sat, 14 Aug 1999 19:01:06 +0100
I've got several hardware devices in my computer (Sound blaster live and
network card) that are reported to be running on different interupts while
using linux on my computer than when it's running Windows. Is there anyway
of telling linux which irq's to use for the pci cards I have installed ?
Thanks

Don't know about 6.0 but I'm running Redhat 5.2 on a Dell Latitude CPi
and I works like a dream. Also, the installation went really smoothly.
