Sounds like you have an Intel EtherExpress NIC. I use these things all the
time (got a bunch second-hand) and don't have any problems. Download the
setup program from Intel and make sure the card is on a happy IRQ and I/O
(it isn't PnP).

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. After I found the
es1371 driver in /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound it didn't
occur to me to look any further...

Unfortunately, I shipped the boxes already so I can't play
around with the cards anymore. Maybe next time... ;-)

Support for the Ultra2 SCSI adapters was not included until version
2.0.36. You will probably need to upgrade to this version to use the
card.

Hi David,
regarding PPP -- add `debug' option to pppd (probably in
/etc/ppp/options file) and look up the output of pppd somewhere in
the files in /var/log/.
If you still can not understand what happens, post the passages to
comp.os.linux.misc or comp.os.linux.networking.
Actually, it is most likely that you are not using proper authentication
procedure (BOTH you AND pppd should be aware of what authentication
method is chosen: PAP, CHAP, or login script).

Cheese,
Andrew

Where's the list of hardware supported by the latest kernel 2.2.5/2.2.6?
What about the old list for 2.0.36/2.0.37?

Also, can anyone get realAudio to work for www.news.com? I installed via
.rpm and it seems to not work (even after proper setup). Is it my sound

Hi all. I stumbled into a problem today when playing with syslog.
It appears that when I configure syslogd to log messages to /dev/lp1
that lpd can no longer get access to the printer and goes into
a state where it thinks the printer is offline. lpd prints normally
when syslog is configured to log to a file.

Does anyone know of a way of letting both interact with the printer
at the same time?

I attempted having syslogd write to /dev/par1, /dev/printer, and such
without any luck.

I am having troubles printing from the Okidata 6e printer. Now, I can
get it to be probed by linux, so I know linux knows about it. I can
get it to print, though not when I wan't it to. Like, sometime I might
get a printer output all of the sudden from something I printed a half
hour ago. The test pages (I am using redhat 5.1's printtool) some out,
the usually not in full, and mized with other printer output. In the
hundreds of pages that have come out, about 2 came out fine (one was a
sample postscript page from redhat, so I know the printer must work
fine. Ohh yes, the DOS output was reliable and good looking (when I
clicked print in the dos setup util, the printer grumbled right away,
and printed.)

Right - just don't ever name your test program test. To see the reason
type
which test

most unix systems)

I installed using a Ultra2 SCSI adapter that was part of my motherboard
(ASUS P2B-2) that uses the same chipset as the 2940U2W and SuSE 6 with
no problems. It saw the adapter during the installation and booted up
correctly.
I could not install with Redhat 5.1 as it would not recognize the
adapter.
Using Redhat 5.2 or SuSe 6 (and any other distributions with 2.0.36 or
greater) to install should work with no problems.

Pardon me, but how did you get your AWE64 set up? Did
you recompile the kernel yourself and add support for
sound? Or did it work for you right away? I have had
the worst time trying to get my sound to work and I've
got the latest starbuck as well. Please say you can
give me some advice, thanks! :)

p.s. I have read the Sound HOWTO, the AWE HOWTO, every
damn howto I could think of. The only way I can get
sound to work is by changing a bios setting (Plug n
Play OS from enabled to disable or vice versa, I can't
quite recall now) Course, when I do that...I can only
use either my ethernet card, or my ultra66 but notboth. AUGH!
