It is possible that you have your BIOS set as "PnP aware", causing the
BIOS not to set up any initial values (turn off PnP aware, and you might
find them assigned for you by the BIOS). For manual config, check out
"man setpci". In the case of winmodems, you are probably out of luck
(some porting efforts were reported for very specific versions, I don't
know which...most are useless).

I have this video card that isn't altogther recognized by any of the X
servers. Can anyone tell me the spces on this chipset so I can manually
configure them? The card is a "Creative Labs 3D Blaster Savage 4" which
uses the S3 Savage 4 Pro chip. This is AGP.

It means that the HiSax driver could not initialize the card
correctly. It either does have an unsupported chipset, or the
underlying HW module has been invoked with incorrect parameters.

By asking in a Linux group, preferrably with more detailed
information about the card and the card's settings.

Hello.

I need some advice on xeon cpus in Linux. I am about to design a system that
will run MySQL and Apache under RedHat 7.0. The question is this:
How well can Linux and my configuration as above use Xeon cpus at 700MHz
with 1MB cache compared to ordinary Pentium III at 933MHz? I will use either
a Compaq DL580 or a Compaq DL380. Since there is a substantial difference in
price I really would like to know if I get enough bang for the buck.
Anoter Q is also: How well can my config use 4 cpus in a max configured
DL580 compared to a 2 cpus max configured DL380?

Thanks in advance for any help.

YES! I have a ThinkPad i Series model 1260 (550Mhz Celeron,
13.3" 1024x768 display). Setting up Corel Linux was a
little tricky but it now dual boots the included Win98 and
Linux. It works well enough that I'll get rid of Windows by
the end of year. (Can't wait to MS-free!)

I checked the kernel and I can't find an option to get linux to recognize more
than 64MB.
$ su -

# cd /usr/src/linux

If you are not using LILO, you must be a GRUB(BY) person :)
If you are using GRUB

Pass a mem= option to your Linux kernel, like this:

grub> kernel /vmlinuz mem=128M

Change the drive ID to something above 1 (2-6).

Do you have any other SCSI devices?

If the 7850 is an onboard adapter chip make sure the termination options
in the BIOS are set correctly if it's got two channels and supports 8
bit and 16 bit wide transfers. Low byte or High byte termination.

It also appears that you may have the kernel SCSI options set to support

Logical Unit Numbers (LUN). The 8824 may not respond correctly to the
7850
with this option set and you may have to disable it and recompile
another kernel.

Patch 2.2.18.gz will change your 2.2.17 kernel source tree into a 2.2.18

http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ general info
http://linuxhardware.com/ hardware info
http://linuxnewbie.org/ new user info
http://deja.com/home_ps.shtml Usenet search engine
file:/usr/doc/ your system's documentation

If you had given more information, like the particular piece of hardware
you're struggling with, the distro you're using, what you've tried
already, and the error messages you've received, then you would've
probably gotten more useful information. Also, you should make your
subject line descriptive--"Help please" gives no information at all,
while "Problem with FooCard-4000 on RedHat 6.1" gives people a place to
start from.

Many people here would like to help, but you have to help us by
describing your problem as accurately and thoroughly as possible. Doing
otherwise is like going to a doctor and saying "It hurts" and nothing
else.

Subject: MagicVideo 3Ddx video card
Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 02:52:49 GMT

I'd like to do X Windows in Slackware Linux through a MagicVideo 3Ddx
4MB 2D/3D PCI Graphics Accelerator card. The Users Guide, the CDROM
that comes with the card, and the IOMagic Web site at
http://www.iomagic.com, seem all perfectly devoid of any useful tech
information.

Is someone using this card in Slackware Linux? For X Windows? What is
setup info?

Cheers -- Martha Adams
