Is there any way to get it working under Redhat 6?
Its a pararell port scanner.

I had an old soundblaster with panasonic CD-ROM port.
It was soft-configured as well, so on power-up I had to put a DOS bootdisk
in that loaded some drivers and configured the card, and then reboot using a
linux boot disk. (SuSE 5.2 at the time)

I don't know what type of CDROM interface you have, but mine was sbpcd.

I just picked up a CompUSA/Maxtor 10.2GB 7200RPM ATA66 drive and a SIIG
UltraATA 66 PCI controller card. I have heard that ATA66 support is
problematic currently, but I am curious as to whether the SIIG card is even
supported under current production kernels in UDMA33 mode, and if so, what
patches if any do I need. Thanks!

I just picked up a Interact PC Arcade joystick at CompUSA for $0.88. It has
an 8-way switch type joystick, eight buttons, and a standard joystick
connector. Does anyone know if this joystick will work with the 2.2.x kernel
joystick driver, and what if any parameters do I need to pass to the module(s)?

I came across some information in the past that
might help you regarding the configuration of two
NIC cards. You may need to "tell" the kernel that
there are two cards, either at boot time or in
/etc/lilo.conf. The full document can be found at
this url:

If I am not mistaken, you'll need mpu401 for ad1848, and according to
Caldera Support, Mpu port is better off to be 0x388, after changing some
IO- ports, my OPL3-sax has a significant increase in performance.

Sean, what would the kernel respond when you type "insmod opl3sa2
io=0x370 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x388 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1", IRQ may vary,
though. Post the error, would you?

(warning! - newbie question)

I recently installed Red Hat Linux on a box that I had custom built after
a careful review of the hardware compatibility lists at Red Hat's website.
I didn't see anything there about monitors, but that was okay since due to
money constraints, I couldn't afford one. I've been using an old 14" AT&T
monitor (model CRT 329M) with mixed results.

Money situation is better now, so I'm in the market for a new monitor. My
question - What monitor(s) [Manufacturer and models] work best with
Linux? Or is the only concern to make sure you have a compatible video
card (which I do)?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Apurva

Some printers nowadays are Windows-only printers, much like you have
Windows-only modems. HP 812C's I think are Windows-only printers...if
someone has a
list of them, could you please post them?

This brings a new problem in that as printers get cheaper, so does the OS
support for them.

I'm not sure but I think that you can't use it under Linux,
infact it uses a propietary printing protocol that need its own
drivers, ...and oki offers them just for windows.

It didn't give any errors. I double clicked the Q3A icon under the GNOME
file manager, the program started running with a black window in the center
of the screen, then the whole screen went black for a second. Then the
program quit - it just shut down - no errors or anything. Should I be
running it inside GNOME or should I try from a command line somewhere? I
just assumed that Q3A didn't work with this 3D card because it won't run
under window98 either (win98 glide doesn't support Voodoo Graphics card with
Q3A).

I'm also having troubles with the Soundblaster Live! module. I'm
running Debian 2.1 (kernel 2.0.36, which is supposed to be supported
in the emu10k1-0.3b driver). I used the manual method in the README

This hopefully will help you since I have a similar setup
(assuming you login as root most of the time):

You need to download and install cdrecord-1.8a17-2 rpm
(I think you don't even need to recompile the kernel)
and then do

1. insmod ide-scsi

2. cdrecord -scanbus

   You should get something like:

> Cdrecord release 1.8a17 Copyright (C) 1995-1998 Jrg Schilling
> scsibus0:
> 0) *

> 7) *
> scsibus1:
> 100) 'HP ' 'CD-Writer+ 8100 ' '1.0g' Removable CD-ROM
> 101) *
> 102) *
> 103) *
> 104) *
> 105) *
> 106) *
> 107) *

or, do

   cat /proc/scsi/scsi

You should get something like:

> Attached devices:
> Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 06 Lun: 00
> Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP 100 Rev: J.03
> Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
> Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
> Vendor: HP Model: CD-Writer+ 8100 Rev: 1.0g
> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

3. In the above example, my cdwriter is in dev bus 1, id 0, lun 0.
   So here's how I blank a cd:

        cdrecord dev=1,0,0 blank=fast -v

The numbers after dev= depend on what you get from the above
probings (see the cdrecord man page for detail).

4. To mount a cdrom (not a blank one of course) in order to read it,
change your cdrom link in /dev/ directory as follow:

   ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom

   mkdir /tmp/cdrom
   mount /dev/cdrom /tmp/cdrom
ls -al /tmp/cdrom (this should list what the cd has)

(I believe your original link to cdrom is to hdc or hdd, etc.)

5. After you have the above four steps correct, you can put the
insmod command into your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. This way you'll
have the ide-scsi emulation running when next time you reboot
the system. There's probably a better way to do this, but I
don't know what that is at this time.

6. Here's how you copy a cd:

   dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/tmp/cdrimage.iso (wait for a while)
   cdrecord dev=1,0,0 speed=4 -v /tmp/cdrimage.iso
(and wait for about 1100 sec)

7. Good luck!
I believe cdrecording will get better when somebody put a nice
GUI front end to the cdrecord engine.

I'd say your best bet is to go with a monitor that supports the standard
refresh rates.

75hz 85hz etc at the resolution you want to run it at.

Most new good monitors do this however.. so just about anything goes. I
managed to get mine working with a flatscreen so..

Have you looked at psutils? To select the odd pages you use 'psselect -o'
and to select the even pages you use 'psselect -e'. Using the '-r' flag
will even spit out the pages in reverse order.

The disk space needed is not significantly larger than the size of the
input file.

Sometimes there's a problem with the ps file and psselect gets confused but
running the file through ghostscript with the '-sDEVICE=pswrite' sometimes
helps.

psutils are available for Linux and have been compiled for the amiga as
part of the geekgadgets set.

Subject: Can Anyone recommend an external or internal ISDN modem for Redhat 5.2.?

Before buying an ISDN modem for my Red Hat 5.2. I'd like to check if
anyone has made positive or negative expieriences with any kind od ISDN
device. I know that the following cards are supported:
SpellCaster's Datacomute/BRI or Telecomute/BRI (ISA)
aswell as a card of Traverse Technologies
but I'd rather have a well knows brand such as US Robotics or Fritz or
any other well known brand.
Thanks for any help, Joel
