I always use cheap stuff :) In this case I bought a SocketEA pc-card NIC.
It turns out to be very good, only cost me $15, but it's recognized by the
linux pcmcia modules, SCO unix, NT, windows9x and OS/2.
It's strictly 10mbits though and no modem.

Hi there,
Now I finally managed to install my Terratec Maestro 32/96,
It acts really strange.
After playing one or two mp3's the sound driver gives up and says
Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?
There seems to be nothing I can do about it. A hardware conflict
seems very unlikely to me, since I spent a great deal of time
configuring it all, and I am SURE the resources used by the soundcard
aren't used by other hardware.
I have a RedHat 5.1 box, with kernel 2.2.5,
The soundcard uses the cs4232 driver (modules), and is PnP.
Thx,

Get a monochrome card for $1-3 or so. Advantage being that they usually
come with another parallel port. Then pick up a non-graphics monochrome
monitor cheap (often free) at your next visit to a "trash and treasure"

Hi
I hope someone out there can help me.
I am not really a PC person (more a Mac person) but have decided to add a

I have managed to obtain an IBM Thinkpad 560 but without the manuals.
I cannot get Xterm to work because I do not know what the memory/controller

Also when I installed I could not get Linux to recognise my NE2000

Can anyone help please???

Use `lprm -a` then switch off the printer. Switch it back on again and it
should have stopped.

Th Guillemot Maxi Gamer Pheonix card is supported in Linux, although the X
server is currently only an alpha one. (but it's stable, I've been using it
since January without any problems)
To set up the Voodoo Banshee (which is what the card is) all you need to do
is to download the server from the site http://glide.xxedgexx.com and then
set up Xfree86 to use the new SVGA server. you will need to use xf86config
to set up the card (unless you have SuSE 6.0 with it's SAX utility) and there
a copy of the server's authors X config file which you can use to help you work
out what you need to put into the various parts of the setup.

Hey thanks for the info. But, it is not working any more. I installed the 2.2.5
kernel in an atempt to get my Soundblaster PCI128 to work. I removed the NIC
driver for my DEC ethernet card and added the ES1370 driver for my sound card. And
now it doesn't see the modem. Pnpdump finds the card just fine. And according to
/proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts it has plenty of resources available to it. I
had it set up for 0x2e8 and irq3. My sound card was on irq 3, so I changed it to
irq 5, 7, 8, 9,10,and 11. To no avail. I even tried 0x2e8, 0x3f8, and 0x3e8.
Again nothing. I may have to take my old 56k modem out of my wife's machine (as
she is saying "Your always tearing my machine apart"). ;-) Of course I could
always just use Windows98 :-( for my internet connection. I do have to use a
script to log into my account. I called my isp and got the info directly from
them.

Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 10:41:25 GMT
I was taking a look at some keyboards such as the belkin mediaboard, which
has 18 extra keys other than the usual, and in 98/NT these can be customized.
How hard would it be to support this under linux? This can be REAL useful
(definetely more so in linux than in windows), for example, one button to pop
up an xterm, another to switch consoles, etc... I guess these extra keys are
just mapped to some of the unused AT keycodes. Another example is the old
gateway keyboard with the F keys on the top row as well as to the left in 2
columns. I think that one had 124 keys but I don't think they make those
anymore.
The keyboard howto talks about using setkeycodes to map these unrecognized
scancodes, and then loadkeys to give them functions. But it says this won't
work in X. Any one know how to go about making it work in X? Has anyone
actually tried this in general?

Yeah... I'm always impressed how people have hope to push Unix to
nontechnical users by providing beautiful GUIs like GNOME or KDE, and
ignoring more fundamental usability problems. What is user-friendly in the
dizzying-beautiful eterm or other "user friendly" programs, if you type a
wrong case and you still get an error message? You are not attacking the
fundamental problems.

What's timidity? Is this a driver of some sort? Commercial? Or is it

If it's a sound card, does it look like anything else for sake of my old

I've heard bad things about those too- Should I take it they're not
